Thanks for going into the book in so much detail. You’ve convinced me to try to obtain them- especially for the later lines I’ve never seen much of. I’ve seen a review of Cobra Commander v3(?) that was hilarious. The buff one with the red faceplate- it was removed to reveal that his face bore an uncanny resemblance to Michael Shannon. 😉

This series of GI JOE toys were a mixed bunch. I liked the idea of vehicles with functional weapons. Those would be fun. The DIC animated series set the tone for some major changes. I still love the artwork all the same.

Yeah, kind of sad to think Joe's hands were in DIC's fate. Never should have stopped using Sunbow. I guess they had to learn the hard way that you get what you pay for. :D

From beginning to end G.I. Joe was an amazing toy line, the line always had something good to offer to kids even in the late years, the designers never run out of ideas.

I actually stopped collecting in 1986 (I turned 14 that year), so seeing these later years is quite an experience for me. Looks like 1990 had some good ones that maybe should have showed up a couple of years earlier. Also think the Nunchuk figure is a nice cross between military and ninja. Several of the later figures would probably have looked better with more dark green, OD green, brown and tan colors than with all the neon. Liked some of the designs, just not the color schemes.

Yeah a few great figures in 1990 that still had that early to mid 80s Joe feel to them. Who knows, maybe some day we'll get reissues of some of these neon figures with a more traditional colour scheme.

great walk through the book. I have a few those vehicles. the Parasite for one (I had to repaint it the bright orange just killed it for me). the rotating track gimmick was cool. also repainted the badger to be more Olive green and it looks much better. interesting side note is that the badger and the headquaters and the Toxolab all got repaints in the Streetfighter line the Crimson red version of the badger looks so much cooler.

Wild Bill 92 was going for the cavalry look his color scheme is fine. Pretty sure Bulletproof and Barricade are supposed to be the COPS characters.

Love the fact that you don't buy certain figures that just don't appeal to you...my favorite are 80s joes...but there are some early 90s joes that were awesome...

Fantastic video-as always. Quick Note: If ANY Joe was going to be a “DEA” agent, it would have been Coast Guardsman Cutter. One of the primary tasks of the Coast Guard is drug interdiction & seizure...

Interesting! I just found it a funny image having Cutter race down a busy street in his big hovercraft chasing after drug dealers. :D

That is on the same level of ridiculousness as the “boardroom meetings” of, “Hey. Do we have enough ‘neon’? No? Good. Let’s do more neon.” 😂😢I definitely agree w/your assessment that “those in charge” did not have their collective fingers on the pulse of what made GI Joe so awesome. I am just old enough to have begun my teenage years in ‘89, so I was basically out of the toy scene for a bit, even though I would continue to read/collect comics. But every so often when I was in Wal-Mart or K-Mart, I would slide over to the toy aisles just to see what was going on. To say I was confused/disappointed by the direction GI Joe, Transformers, & Masters of the Universe had gone, would be a small understatement. I believe the last original run Joe I actually bought was Hardball (because I was playing baseball at the time-it would have been Big Lob if he had been made then). I never got rid/sold anything, so I have quite the collection to pass on to my children. I got back into collecting when I came home from playing in “The Sandbox”, and had met my wife. It was a good time because the 20th anniversary of Optimus Prime had come out, Toys-R-Us (RIP, Dawg) was doing their G1 TF’s, & I went buck wild on the majority of the 25th anniversary of GI Joe toys...

GI Joe fan from the 80's (born in 74). It jumped the shark for sure after the first few years. Too many wacky and unrealistic characters. Still, I'm going to buy that hardcover omnibus for $150 -- great price for what you're getting!

This makes me wish that I'm not selling off all my Modern Joes.. I really liked Darklon and I missed out the first time he was released, then he came out in the ffs wave and around that time after a few waves of the 50th I decided to quit collecting them. Now I just sell and use the cash for my Motu collection.. It was getting to be too much to collect both so I narrowed it down to my favorite toyline..

Sky patrol were not original molds, only the heads. For instance airwave is a motor viper and Drop Zone is a Strato Viper.

cutter is actually perfect for the DEF because he's like the vehicle driver for the navy, so since the navy has a unit that boards boats and focuses on human and drug trafficking. that's why cutter would fit in the unit because if drugs were getting smuggled into the states via boat cutter would be the guy who would drive the boat to get the team to board the boat smuggling their cargo. check out the video of this unit boarding cartel handmade submarine trying to smuggle drugs; it's crazy. the team member just jumps of the sciff boat and jumps on top of this sub and starts beating on the door hatch. also if you think about the battle sound series of figures, but if they were the same price as the other single figures they could have spent more on more detailed of elaborate equipment for single figures instead of putting the money towards the battle sound gimmick. which i'm sure all the funding went towards that and the paint to re paint preexisting figures/weapons.

I was like you, when I saw how ridiculous the repaints looked and adding so many huge accessories that covered the art on the cards I lost all interest in collecting GI Joe anymore. Too bad they felt they had to compete with C.O.P.S for how much plastic they can sell.
