Today’s altered book layout tutorial is a process video where I go through the collage and mixed media techniques I used in the pages as well as altering the cover. It also features peacocks and real, live peacock feathers. It's a lot of video so pull up a cup of tea and join me as we take a deep dive into collage in an altered book, how and why elements work - and sometimes don't.

Yes! A true grand finale to that lovely book! I do love the peacock and the feathers (I never dared to use feathers myself). And I'm a big fan of altered covers. Perhaps if the cover of a book is of such a stunning beauty that touchung it would be a sin, it should be left alone. Otherwise, adding birds, flowers or butterflies can only make things better! 🪶🌼

Hi Centi. Thank you. Yes, a bird or butterfly is usually a good entry on any page. (I know that you know. I have seen that you use them a lot.🐥) I like to tuck feathers in here and there for texture and they are evocative. Free mixed media art supplies!

That was so great. I love to listen to your very analytical brain work out aesthetic choices. They turn out so great.

Thanks bunches, Catherine. Afraid this one went on a bit but I also think that it could be helpful to show the steps that take so long and then don't make the cut (like threading those darn feathers through paper and then not liking it as much as I dreamed/assumed I would). 😺

Hey Kelly, I just adore how you used your stunning peacock feathers! Loved them over top the thin Asian paper as well! And I thank you for the BIG tip about just glue behind feathers with one doll~up of glue! I'm always trying to get the entire dang thing down on the back side of feather! And...it usually looks hideous. I'm greatly looking foreword to your tips and goals for New Year! You always have terrific and inspiring suggestions. Thank you my creative buddy!

I know what you mean about the glue, Lynn, but again, I practiced that off camera as I had no idea if it would work or look icky. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. I think the resolution pep talk/nag will go up on Thursday. Fingers crossed. Resolutions are like religion for me.

I really enjoyed seeing this video and hearing your thought process while creating. I wanted to share that I have used hairspray when using some things like feathers in my journal with some success. It may help if you want to try. Thanks for the great thoughtful videos

Oooh, thank you for this idea. Feathers are indeed techy things that don't always like to cooperate with paper and glue. I'll give it a try. 😺

Hi, Kelly! I love what you did with that cover. I don’t think that we shouldn’t alter covers, everything depends on the cover itself, and I absolutely love the bird there. The pages are gorgeous too and I love the feathers, because I love feathers. I don’t have peacock ones, but I gather seagull feathers on the beach. I have such big ones! They wouldn’t fit in books, but they’re on display at my house. I have art journals just to experiment things. If turns out wrong, no worries, if turns out right, great! I specially like to do that with colour combination. I paint my odd crazy faces and see what colours I like. I’m curious about the New Year’s resolutions, because I have never done that...! 💙💜💗🖤❤️🧡💚💛♥️

Alexandra, I have a bunch of mockingbird feathers that I keep in a vase on my desk. They make me happy and they make me think of things. Now - New Years Resolutions are like a religion for me. I used them to change my life and get to where I am now and I like to show how it is possible so - stay tuned! I am thinking it will be ready for this Thursday. Kelly

I really enjoyed this video! Just the other day, I was looking for my peacock napkins. Still looking 🙄 I especially like the way you used a piece of the spine of an old encyclopedia in one of the layouts. I had never thought of doing that!

Hiya. I have an absurd amount of old dictionary spines in leather and patina. They also make good book marks. 😺
