@@noonelooksatusers There was actually a bit of discourse about this a little while ago on TikTok, the general consensus is that if you're printing and binding it for yourself or someone else, it is ok AS LONG as you're not making money from it bc then the author does not benefit from it. So yes for personal use, no for commercial use.
@noonelooksatusers
@noonelooksatusers 2 ай бұрын
@@Jocelynex yeah true! i saw some of that and i do believe you can print whatveet tf u want for personal use (cuz thats the law in my country so its okay) but i mostly worry about the fact some authors dont want ppl to have a physical copy itherwise they can never dekte the work and its always up there.

If you do any future binds I recommend folding the signatures together rather than page by page. It's goes much faster and it actually helps the pages sit more snugly in their signatures!

@@taegiseoktrash8874Hi ! I know I'm not the one you asked this question to, but I may have a few tips that could help. To fold your signatures, yiu can use a vertical surface ; like, if your desk is against a wall, you can push the stack of sheets against the wall, and then fold them, aligning all edges against the wall. That will make your signatures straight and square with no efforts. If you are printing on A4 printing paper (the classical paper most people print on), you don't need to mesure the height of your book : this format has a standard size, which mean the smallest side (the width, that become the height of your book) is always the same. With A4, it's 21,7 cm. It's easier to punch holes from the inside ; you basically use the fold itself to make sure nothing shift. To obtain something always identical, you have two options. You can make a simple template, by cutting sort of a L shape in a thick paper (card style paper, for example) that is longer than your book. It should look like a perfect rectangle, with just a small square jutting out on one extremity. You mark each extremities of your book on the template (so where it begins and where it ends), the top extremity right where the small "paper hook" meet the rest of your rectangular template, then the placement of all your holes (right against the edge of your template). To use it, you open the signature at a 90° angle (one half flat on your desk, the other, straight up), hook your template on the top of your signature, put it right against the fold, and then, you just have to punch the holes following the markings. The other option is to actually use a jig made specifically for it. You can find it in a lot of etsy shop, as a bookbinding tool, often 3D printed, for a small price. It allow you to rest your signature open in it and there's pre-pierced holes all along it that allow you to choose where you want them, and to repeat them perfectly identically on all your signatures with no efforts. When you are sewing, the places you are the more likely to tighten your thread too much are the extremities. If your book begin to look like a banana (small at the ends, and wide in the middle), then you are definitly sewing too tight. It's no big deal, but it's better to cut the thread, separate the signatures and try again. To help you, you can press/rub regularly the signatures at the spine with your bone folder, to keep encouraging them to lay flat, which will show you how loose/tight to keep your sewing. If you really have a hard time, try the technique called coptic binding. It's often shown with an exposed spine, but you can make it encased too. The advantage is that this technique actually create lines of sewing at multiple place on the spine, which tighten the book in an uniform way (so if you keep sewing tight, it will be tight everywhere, not just on the extremities). If you want a great tutorial for that, go check Sea Lemon : she has a video for case binding, and show a variation of the coptic stitch to sew a book in a very clear tutorial. If you are afraid of not getting the bookcase (the hard cover) on the book correctly, and having your decorative pages all messed up with wrinkles, or the book not straight inside, you can use a glue call methy-cellulose instead of PVA to glue the endpages to the cover. Unlike PVA, methyl-cellulose take longer to tack, and that means you can unglue your endpages, and try again a few minutes later if everything is not in place right after glueing. If you want to watch tutorials, I suggest the channels of Sea Lemon, Nick the Booksmith, and DAS Bookbinding. The first one is very beginner friendly, the second one shows more in depth tutorials and ideas, the last one is more oriented traditionnal bookbinding, but is often filled with very useful tips (like the hook-like paper template for the holes in the signatures) Hoping this can help you !

I got a Kindle just days before for Christmas so I downloaded it and the book consumed my life for the next two weeks. The darkest thing I have read but the story was so compelling I could not stop. This reminds me of the first school project I’ve ever done ALL by myself in 7th grade, and it took me SIX hours (it was a geography 3D project for God’s sake I had to create the solar system!!) and I thought it looked so good but the edges of all the planets were so damn uneven and I ended up crying until my face looked like a tomato. I didn’t even have the tools to redo it, I had used up like two glue sticks and around 11110 sheets of card stock, and at the end it just looked like a 5th year old’s kindergarten activity. At the end I just turned in that project and my teacher said it looked good, so I basically had a goddamn panic attack for nothing. 😭

Hi there ! I currently study bookbinding like it's what I literally study in life and I have to say that you did really great for a first book ! That's an incredible gift and you can be proud of yourself The reason why your book ended up being a bit wavy is because when in contact with water (from the glue, air humidity etc) the paper stretches and it stretches in one way a lot more that in the other ! As the book is made, the paper cannot stretch freely, so the pages wave. Nothing you could have done there then To avoid that the best thing you can do is identify which way the paper stretches before starting your binding (and even printing) Identifying that can be tricky but it will be really life changing for your future bindings !

I'm actually so proud of her. That's such a hell of a lot of work, and I'm so happy for her and how she kept getting back up again even with every drawback. If I could have said one thing to whilst she was in the midst of this project, I would like to remind her that errors are natural - even necessary - when learning a new skill. It's very helpful to remember that "it's not a mistake, it's a learning experience". It really helps me maintain a positive outlook when the going gets tough on something like this. Idk, I'm just puttin' my thoughts out there.

I’m hand binding books for all of my friends and this gave me the strength to just keep going and not doubt myself! Also, one thing I learned about attaching the cover is to use only enough glue to completely cover the surface, then use parchment paper and a scrap piece of paper together to put in between the pages and the glued cover as a shield to prevent the glue from seeping through while it’s drying.

You did so well with these books, way better than me when I did my first book binding project. I didn’t have a guillotine so had to manually cut the edges myself with a knife blade (and it looked so ugly, I’m now saving for a heavy duty guillotine) they looked beautiful by the way, I’d be so happy if a friend did this for me as well. ❤
