Another episode of Books, Books, Books, and this time I'm opening up some pages from the past, as well as some more recent journalling. Because I hop from journal to journal, and because I've had some of them for many years, looking inside can be very revealing. You'll see glimpses of the creative journey I've taken over the years... some of the early pages make me wince a little!
This is the Dylusions Creative Journal in the large size... it's lovely to work in, but sometimes months or even years can go by between the page spreads you'll see in this video, simply because I'm busy with other projects or working in other journals.
Watch me watercolouring my PaperArtsy Printed Tissue here: • A few minutes of fun -...

Thank you. It's definitely a little weird looking back at some of the pages from so long ago... A couple of them genuinely make me wince a bit - but then some, like the trees and those daisies, take me by surprise in a really good way, and it's good to notice what a long way I've come, but also the elements which have been there since the beginning. And of course, there are multiple other art journals which have also been on the go over those years, of all shapes and sizes... so there are different journeys to see in all of those! Happy you enjoyed it.

I have watched so many people work in art journals. I have made them from scratch, bought some and recovered them, I have made some with lovely watercolor paper and I have never even used one page. I’m afraid that I won’t be good enough, that I will ruin a page, etc. blah blah blah…….. July 1st is my deadline for this craft room makeover and then I’m going to DO AN ART JOURNAL! The frustration is building. I’m getting ready to bust out and I need to be able to find my stuff. Your journal is wonderful! I love the notes you make on the left side. When I was cardmaking, in the beginning, I would leave a post it note on the back, so I would be able to remember how I did something I loved or didn’t love. You have such beauty that pours out of you. I want to be like you when I grow up. I feel so double minded. I keep changing my mind about how to arrange my stuff and what i use the most and how I’m going to be able to get to them. Sorry for going on and on. I’ll get there. Hugs, treen 💕💕💕💕

I hear your pain. When I moved countries, the bulk of my craft supplies got stuck in boxes for nearly six months while floors were finished etc etc. I was working with quite a substantial "temporary" stash, but nonetheless it was really frustrating... And also really hard to work out all the placements and storage once I could get things out again. There were some things that I knew had to be easily available, but too many of them to all be within reach all the time! Ikea Raskog trolleys are an excellent thing - because then you can roll certain supplies in and out of the prime positions. I have four - only one bought at Ikea, all the others from yard sales and car boot sales - they are a vital part of my storage. But then with the journalling, you have to banish the "judgment monkey" - that annoying pest who sits on our shoulders and says unhelpful things. Who cares if a page gets "ruined"? Nobody's going to see it but you (unless you choose to share it in a YT video of course!!)... and that's what a journal is for - exploring, playing, failing, trying something else. Plus I bet if you leave it and go back a few days/weeks/months/years later and add a few layers, it will end up somewhere better than you thought! It must be more than six years since I put the texture paste through the daisy stencil for the second time, and I now - finally - feel the urge to carry on with that page!! And even a "ruined" page teaches you something, so it's never wasted... unless it's left unused - that's how I try to look at it. Anyway, good luck with the final stages of the makeover. Remember you're still allowed to move things even after you've "finished". That's why we have previews in the theatre before opening night... until the audience is in, you really don't know what you have. Same with the craft room... until you start playing and using the space, you won't know for sure where things work best.

It's fun seeing your exploration and play in your art! I also appreciate seeing blank pages left in between - I always feel like I have to fill it all up, but why??? If a page isn't calling, it's ok to skip (I have to remind myself and keep working on it hahaha)
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
I think often I've left those blank pages because there is, for instance, a metal brad pushing through, or the paper has become very wrinkly. But at some point I will go back and fill up the spaces in between... and then I really won't know how old a page is any longer!! And certainly I have no problem with starting a page and then leaving it for later if it's not calling me. It's probably at least six years since I created that second textured stencilled daisy page, and now I - finally - really really want to paint it... waiting for that urge to create is allowed! Thank you so much for your lovely comment, and carry on skipping pages!!

Hello Alison! Thank you for sharing your old journal… what a treat it is to see some of your earlier work. Although your trained artist’ eye may see more variables, from here it appears you found your style quite early on as I could see most of those pages created by the same person. I was especially excited to see the page using the JOFY stamps and Tim Holtz Crazy Birds. Those birds are what got me into art journaling because I found VickyP’s art journal page using the Crazy Birds when searching KZfaq for ideas in 2015… I don’t know if I’ve even found my own ‘style’ yet because I love so many different artists, brands, techniques, supplies, etc. which is why I get ‘stuck’ so often. My favorite completed journal is from 2019 using a Dylusions 8”x8” kraft journal and all the pages used stamped, cut out images of flowers in some fashion - PaperArtsy, Dylusions, Studio Light, etc… I keep saying I should do another one because I had so much fun creating those pages. Anyway… I have thought about doing flip through videos but haven’t been able to overcome the fear of criticism so I commend you even more for sharing so much of your creations and surroundings. I appreciate every video whether long or short. Thank you… Have a wonderful weekend! I’m off now to enjoy your newest “A few minutes of fun” =) 🙂
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
I think as long as you stay curious, that's the main thing. Finding "your" style can even be a trap, because you stop exploring and playing in other directions... I'd say keep right on loving all those different artists and brands and techniques and products and keep playing - that's where the joy is! Your square journal sounds lovely... I have a couple of square ones on the go - one white, one kraft. The white one should be coming up in a couple of weeks. The kraft one is going to have to wait for winter, as the majority of the spreads in there are somewhat snowy!! As far as criticism goes, working in theatre has taught me to bring several buckets of salt along with me whenever I engage with it! Hope you're having a lovely weekend.
