Abigail this was an extremely comforting comment to read. I am 18 years old and on Tuesday I graduated high school. I still love children’s books and collect toys of my favorite games or animated movies. Children’s books are the one thing that I look very fondly on, especially the books I can vividly remember my mom reading. Sometimes she will pull out one of our favorites and read it out loud to me. We will always be young at heart so long as you allow the magic of youth and it’s joys to flow within✨

Little Women. It’s so beautiful. Louisa May Alcott wrote about very important things in life. Every chapter I was learning something that I have kept with me all these years. Chapter XI: Experiments especially taught me something. If Little Women taught me anything it was to “Have regular hours for work and play, make each day both useful and pleasant, and prove that you understand the worth of time by employing it well. Then youth will be delightful, old age will bring few regrets, and life become a beautiful success, in spite of poverty.”

I too am a bookseller and lover of reading. I grew up with Frog and Toad and still find those books so charming. I am not a huge fiction reader, I confess, but now I am interested in Legends and Lattes. It is a very popular book in our store, but I had never considered it since the genre is not usually one I care for. I enjoy all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and I have also recently found a local author who writes about his childhood during the great depression. People had very little but were so thankful for what they did have and enjoyed such simple pleasures!! My most favorite fictional writer is Grace Livingston Hill...such wholesome stories about everyday life and she has the most charming way of describing homes and how her characters live life in their homes. Just love them!!! I have skimmed some of James Harriot's books and have enjoyed what I have read. I too enjoy children's books, or any book really, that has beautiful artwork in it. I often find myself wanting to buy a book simply for the beautiful cover! That's odd I know...but I just love beautiful things. I hope you continue to share your favorite reads from time to time!!!

Whenever I feel overwhelmed I always read valley of horses by Jean auel. It’s the sequel to clan of the cave bear and it set during the ice age. It’s all about gathering food, learning to make your own clothes, tools and just surviving. She lives alone and adopts baby animals for company. It’s a lovely story about survival and happiness in its purest form.

I couldn't agree more - once about every 1-2 years I read the entire series again, but I think The Valley of Horses is my favorite of all of them, though I also love The Mammmoth Hunters. Even Plains of Passage - I think my favorite parts of her books are the descriptions about day to day survival, though the story line and her character development are better than almost any fiction I've read.

I’m an inveterate reader and subscribe to the theory that if you’re a reader, you’ll never be bored! As an Elder, I love and often reread the original Nancy Drew mysteries or other books from my childhood such as Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Or the All of a Kind Family series. Descriptions in these books of decor and home living, foods, early century entertainments are a fascinating read. In the adult nonfiction genre, I find inspiration and encouragement in Alexandra Stoddard’s books, in particular one of her earlier books, Creating A Beautiful Life. Reading other’s opinions on creating and appreciating your life and/or creating meaningful rituals always interests and inspires me.

Thanks so much for the book recommendations! One of my favorite children's books is one titled "Mandy." It was written by Julie Edwards, who is better known as Julie Andrews. This is about girl who runs away from where she's living to this little cottage in woods, where she diligently works hard to clean & restore the little place. When I was young, I would read this & my imagination would run WILD! For some reason, this book literally just came alive for me! The scenes in the story were all so vivid in my minds eye. Hope everone enjoys this book at least half as much as i did. There are others that she wrote either alone or with her daughter Jennifer Walton. Hapoy Reading! 🎉

Thank you for these recommendations! I love Bookish content and would love to see more from you :). To fit the theme, I would recommend the short memoir "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating" by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. Bedridden and severely ill after contracting a mysterious illness on vacation, Elisabeth can really only stare at the ceiling - she can barely move, can't listen to music or hold up a book. Her friend brings her a snail (more as a joke), but Elisabeth ends up obsessively watching the snail and appreciating every aspect of it's life cycle with detail. The book really zooms in on this small, magical animal and it's very inspiring, especially if you're dealing with a chronic illness like myself. I read this in one sitting too!

As a small child The Very Hungry Caterpillar set me on a life path of the love of reading. I still have a copy and started reading it to my granddaughter. (She’s 3.) We’ve read it so many times she nearly has the story memorized. She loves to sit with the book and read her own rendition. Also, might I recommend Gifts From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. It’s a wonderful book I make a point of reading every year and love to gift it to people.

I read all three books in the Shady Hollow series after your previous recommendation and really enjoyed spending time with those woodland creatures. Once Upon a River was also previously recommended and my book club really enjoyed reading it. Another adult book with magical realism that I would recommend is The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister about a young girl living on a remote island with her father and learning about the natural world through her senses.

Thank you so much for this precious video. I love books, books, and all things books😊. I come from a family of avid readers. My 4th grade Teacher, Mrs. Savage was so young, and lady like. She used the last 15 minutes of class to read to us from "The Little House In The Big Woods". I was transported to the prairie home of the Ingalls family, and my thirst and love for reading grew even stronger. During our summer breaks from school, my sisters and I lived for the Book Mobile. It stopped in our area every two weeks. We would check out as many books as possible to last for two weeks, and then start all over again. To us, those summers were PRICELESS🤗

I simply LOVE books. To me, they are a treasure beyond compare. I think I was able to instill a a love of reading in my elementary school students. I had the largest classroom library in my state in order to provide as much variety for reading selections for my students. (In fact, I had so many books that, when I was scrounging in the annual discard boxes from my school's library, the principal saw me and told me that I didn't need any more books. I ignored him, of course.) My classroom library had comic books, short books, chapter books, fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and magazines. I also squeezed as much "free reading time" as I could out of every day for the kids, during which they could read what they wanted instead of what I made them read as part of their lessons: stuff from my classroom library, the school's library, and their own books from home (I even had one student who enjoyed reading athletic shoes catalogs, but at least he was reading). I'm so very glad you mentioned James Herriot. I have all of his books, except the children's book you featured (though I do have a couple of other of his children's books, which are taken from his adult books and rewritten for children ("The Christmas Kitten" and "Just One Woof"). I would suggest the Readers Digest coffee table book "The Best of James Herriot." Not only is it full of his wonderful stories, it also has good illustrations, photo sections (countryside, villages, farms, pubs), and interesting tidbits about farm life in the 1930s in the margins. If you enjoy James Herriot, you will also like Patrick Taylor's Irish Country Doctor books. Instead of being about a veterinary practice in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s, most of his books are about a medical practice in a small Irish village in the 1960s. If you like books that transform everyday things and happenings into magic, then you should check out "Dandelion Wine" by Ray Bradbury. I know he's better know for his science fiction, but this isn't in his usual genre, and it's well worth checking out. Another science fiction book you need to read if you want to realize how important those little everyday things are can be is "Alas, Babylon." It's about a small Florida town that escapes the devastation of a nuclear war. All those little things we all take for granted? Radio, TV, playing music on our various devices, fans and air conditioning ... coffee! ... all gone. How to survive while still maintaining a semblance of normalcy? The characters have to find the strength to reach deep inside themselves in order to not only survive, but to thrive. Spoiler alert: One character finds a new feeling of purpose in her life. The town librarian finds the silver lining in the disaster. Before the war: she felt all but useless because no one wanted to read anymore. After the war: with no TV or radio, people turn to the books in her library for entertainment. Rather fitting for this video, don't you think? Another good series: Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern books. From the name, you would think that it's fantasy, but you learn the truth at the end of the first trilogy ("The White Dragon"). Also GREAT: Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series, starting with the first trilogy "Arrows of the Queen." Plus, there are Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson books, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Kevin Hearne's (I may have got the last name wrong here) Iron Druid books (the dog in these books is hilarious), Clive Cussler's NUMA Files, James Rollins' adventure books (though some can get rather technical in the science department), the rom-com manga "Sweat & Soap" (funny, teary at times, sexy, cute, and sweet; 11 books in the series), the graphic novel series "Once and Future" (now collected into 5 trade paperbacks; King Arthur returns, but "the king is undead"), Robert B. Parker's Spencer for Hire novels, Louis L'Amour's Westerns, and if you can find them, Robert Asprin's Mythadventure books (with each chapter starting with a funny quote, such as, "This is another fine myth you've gotten me into," Har.D to Laur.L). I read "Legends & Lattes" last week. Point of order: Viv is unusual in that she is an orc, an orc who reads. I love books so much that I've written five of my own, one nonfiction and four novels. The first two were published as ebooks, got great reviews, and the first one even won an award (and was a finalist for another award). Sadly, they are no longer available. I'm currently working on completing my sixth book (another novel), with a LOT more waiting in the wings. Now if only I can find a literary agent to represent me and my books. Of course, I have to squeeze in my writing between reading, as well as watching and commenting on KZfaq videos. 😄

I finally read it in May. I loved it! I read so many graphic novels, floppy comics, urban fiction, fantasy, cozy mystery, mysteries. Just not a fan of non-fiction or Victorian lit. I absolutely love this. The Hidden Life of Trees and Legends & Lattes are two of my favourite books. I have four other books by Peter Wohlleben as well: The Inner Life of Animals, The Secret Wisdom of Nature, The Weather Detective, and The Heartbeat of Trees. His writing is so peaceful and insightful. I also can't wait for the sequel to Legends & Lattes, Bookshops & Bonedust, that comes out November 7!! My other favourite books about nature include Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and To Speak for the Trees by Diana Beresford-Kroeger. Braiding Sweetgrass provides a brilliant introduction to Indigenous wisdom about science and nature. Kimmerer writes that the grammatical animacy of the natural world in her language, Potawatomi, teaches an inherent reverence and respect for nature. While the Western perspective of botany that she studies in school teaches the names for plants and ignores their spirits, her understanding of Indigenous wisdom also allows her to explore questions that Western science would overlook as unimportant. For example, after being told that the question "Why do asters and goldenrods look so beautiful together?" is not the realm of science, Kimmerer provides an explanation in her book using biology, optics, neuroscience, and art theory. Robin Wall Kimmerer reads her own audiobook, and it is so soothing to listen to. To Speak for the Trees is the autobiography of Diana Beresford-Kroeger, who was raised learning traditional Celtic plant lore and then went on to study biochemistry in Canada and become a world-renowned botanist. I also think you would like Rooted by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. It's like a quiet stroll through the forest, and it's sprinkled with lovely illustrations. If you like cozy fantasy novels, The House in the Cerulean Sea by T. J. Klune is a delightful story of an inspector for the orphanages of children with magical powers falling in love with with one of the families he's supposed to investigate and working to make people with magic more accepted. Finally, for cozy and entertaining books about ordinary life, I have to recommend Once Upon a Tome by Oliver Darkshire! This is the memoir of a rare bookseller, and it is such a wonderful read. His anecdotes about the bookselling profession are hilarious, and reading them feels like spending time with a good friend in a bookstore as he recounts his adventures. Thank you for the video, and I hope you have an amazing day! 💜

I think you’re so brave ❤ I feel so shy and hesitant to share my soft/magical/feminine/dreamy side. By that I mean, you readily say things (that I feel sometimes) like “going outside to share your books with the wild flowers (or even fairies)!” Why do we hide ourselves? For fear of being misunderstood or thought of as delusional instead of whimsical ~ I’m not one to be bothered to explain myself to people, but then, I fear who will be left? I’m not sure if you know what I mean. Only, it’s rare to be you. And you’re so brave to not filter that femininity. I would greatly appreciate if you explained where it comes from, this bravery? What are the values that drive you to be so open and public about this side of yourself? Perhaps you have a compass that you habitually use to guide you, or if you journal I wonder how you structure it to reach those inner crevices that need light? I could really use some strength and wisdom. Much love, a Persian woman, from Australia
