I LOVE CHARLIE BONE! I've never seen anyone else talk about it and often feel like I'm the only one that remembers them! lol I also love the Inheritance Cycle but I know you've talked about them before and I totally appreciate that. Have you ever read the Septimus Heap series? I know I read those books at the same time as CB, IC, and HP; and it's incredible. Really want to do a reread soon! Of ALL these books now.

Thanks so much for making this video, Jean! I’m forever looking for books to escape in, like Harry Potter! Usually I just return to the series itself, but it’s great to have some new options to try! I’m especially interested in The Diviners! I’m currently working my way through the Robin Hobb series, but I’m especially excited about the Dragon Keeper!

I hope you enjoy the Diviners. I'm the same, sometimes I really need some really good escapism literature and that's what Harry Potter serves as but it's nice to have the excitement of plots I don't know.

Robin Hobb is the best. The Farseer trilogy and the rest of the books that center around Fitz are my absolutely favorite. The character development in all her books is very on point but I especially enjoy the friendship between Fitz and the Fool. Something about them just fills my heart. I really have to pace myself with her books or I'll read them all too quickly and then there won't be any more to read! Some other books that remind me of this is the His Dark Materials series, the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce, Abarat by Clive Barker, or the So You Want to Be a Wizard series by Diane Duane.

I second the Farseer Series love. Before LOTR, harry potter and ASOIAF there was Assassins Apprentice for me, which accompanied me in my early, not so easy, teen years. I felt i had a deep psychological connection with Fitz. Ofcourse the subsequent series of Robin Hobb in the farseer world have also captivated me, but not as much as the farseer one. Highly, highly recommend you to read it.

It’s só good to know that you’ve enjoyed Eragon at a later stage in your life as well, I’ve read the first three when I was young, but like you, I never got around to finishing the series because of the gap in publishing, and I forgot the story and never re-read them. Now I’ve been hesitant because, what if I wouldn’t like them anymore and maybe ruin a childhood memory of liking the books? (This does make sense in my head, maybe not so much when writing it down) But you’ve convinced me to pick them up again!

Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's gave me that same cosy, totally immersed sensation. So much so that I have rationed myself otherwise I would have rushed through them so fast, and part of the enjoyment is anticipation!! I usually love anything to do with time travel and I love well -constructed mysteries that tie up all the loose ends and are meticulous... Just love them! I found this video interesting and it gave me some inspiration. I've only just discovered your channel, and your blog, and have only watched 3 videos so far, but have found them all really good, and I appreciate the way you present reviews. I think mine is Paul O'Grady's series of autobiographies. I know it sounds like an odd choice, but I find them such a comfort read, they make me feel like I'm time travelling and I'm right there with him when he's describing his childhood, teenage years and then adult years. I re-read them every year, and even have them in paperback and e-book form in case I need to take them somewhere where I need a comfort read! I was a relative latecomer to Harry Potter, I didn't start the books till I was about 21/22 and at University, as I had nothing else to read and brought along my mum's copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. As she had bought them to read to her class. I then enjoyed the first one so much, I had to race around Sunderland to find the remaining copies from the series, and then the day after I graduated, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was published.

As for ones that I read as a child, I fell in love with the Inkheart series, Ella Enchanted, the Percy Jackson series, Fablehaven series, Savvy by Ingrid Law, and A Wrinkle in Time + sequels. But the truly special ones are the one that I’ve read as an adult that have given me the same HP feelings: Lumberjanes graphic novels, The Bear and the Nightingale series, Among Others by Jo Walton, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. And three that have stood the test of time, that are (after HP) my favorite worlds to return to: The Books of Bayern series, and the Princess Academy series, both by Shannon Hale. And the Graceling series by Kristin Cashore :)

Ooh it's good to hear such high praise for The Bear and the Nightingale, it's on my shelf. I also need to read more Jo Walton given how much I adored Tooth and Claw. Unfortunately The Book Thief wasn't for me though, just goes to show how subjective it all is :).

Completely agree with the Inheritance series, I had the exact same feeling growing up with it. If you are a fan of high fantasy though, one of my favourite ever series are the books of Pellinor by Alison Croggon. It’s one of those ones where I can remember exactly where I was when I first read them. Other than Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings, it’s the only fantasy series I find myself re-reading again and again. Would highly recommend them if you’ve never read them!

The Gemma Doyle series is one of top series, it may even top Harry Potter. I read the first book when it first came out so my teen years hold memories of the book. I even did a painting of the 1st book cover in art class and one of the first book series I started reading fan fiction for while waiting for the books to be released. Harry Potter is more attached to my childhood, I was the same age as the characters when the movies came out. I still haven't watched the 6th and 2 Deathly Hallows films since i heard they removed a lot of good content from the books.

MIght have been like me, there were long gaps between the books and they were difficult to remember all the names etc so they just faded away until I started again like 8 years later aha. 2 series I want to suggest. Ursula LeGuin’s A Wizard of Earthsea (1st of a series). This first book especially resonated with me. The world-building and magic system is brilliant, and the characters so real. This book is followed by The Tombs of Atuan and the Farthest Shore. In fact I think there are 2 or 3 others, but at the time I originally read them it was a trilogy with no followups on the horizon. Another series of books I’d actually call a sub-series, because it happens on a smaller scale than the original series. In Anne McKaffre’s Dragon Riders of Pern series the YA subset includes Dragon Song, Dragon Singer, and Dragon Drums. These are awesome books that transport you away and made me want to reread them over and over.

I just started the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik and I loved it way more than I thought I would although I do already love her writing. It's set in an alternate history setting during the Napolean War where they have an "Air Force" of dragons and their riders. I'm not much of a war reader so some of that got a little boring with me, but I loved the main character and his dragon so much in this one. And her writing style is so immersive that I felt like I wanted to read it slower to savor it more. :)

Eragon is kind of a sad case for me. I remember reading it when I was younger (probably around 12?) and liking the first and the second book. However, even back then I found the second book to be incredibly boring at some parts (namely all the parts written from Eragons brother's perspective). I actually skipped those parts which is something I normally never do. Never finished the series. When I was older I tried re-reading the first book but couldn't finish it since I found it to be so incredibly boring and uninteresting and just not that well written. A fantasy series that I really liked when I was younger is The Black Magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan. Loved them. The Skulduggery Pleasant series is really good too, I discovered it when I was already an adult and it's meant for children, but it can totally be read by adult readers as well. Edit: Just remembered another book that I loved as a kid (I read it around the same time as I read the Harry Potter books, though I started HP at the age of 7 or 8): Bartimaeus. The first book is so funny, witty and full of magic. But I never read the rest of the series.

Weirdly I'd never heard of Bartimaeus books until this comment and then watched a video today where someone mentioned them aha. It's hard to say whether you'll enjoy the inheritance cycle if you try again. I love the long, epic fantasy style with lots of world building and details even when the plot isn't speeding forward in the books. I'd recommend trying the audiobooks, that might work. It's how I experienced them when I picked the series back up at 19! Trudi Canavan's books were already on my list but you've bumped them up!

CHARLIE BONE. Its been a 1000 years since I have heard about it. I totally agree. Charlie bone is very similar to Harry Potter in terms of a gripping storyline. Unfortunately, it's writing is more childish and kinda mediocre. Still love it though. I would recommend this to younger children. ERAGON THOUGH. We have a similar reading experience only that I have yet to pick it up again. I shall when I can 😭😭 (too many amazing new books around)
