Can I just say how much I admire the way you review books? Like, you're so empathatic for everything that went into making these books and even when you personally don't like it (like with Monstress, which I felt the sameway about) you don't rip it apart and when you do like it you really show your appreciation. Just lovely to listen to you being kind to books

P.S.--Love your tulips in the background! I was recently looking up pictures of flowers (for Easter decorations) and was, as always, blown away by images of the tulip fields in The Netherlands. Hope your bouquet feels like a bit of home to you!

Great recommendations ! Getting graphic novel from the library is such a good idea; I love graphic novels but they can be quite expensive so it's great to have the opportunity to read them before deciding if you want to buy the whole series !

As soon as I saw the thumbnail I shrieked “Giant Days!!!!!!!” I love the series so much. It’s completely different from what I usually read like Saga and Sandman and Monstress. Great recs, Sanne 😃

Of the ones that you’ve mentioned, I’ve read Monstress’, and while I see that it can be confusing I was kind of fascinated by it. It was sometimes on the line of being too brutal for me, especially the bits about torturing children, but I did like the story and the characters, so I might pick up the second one. ‘Heartstopper’ sounded awesome, so I will check that out! A graphic novel you might enjoy is ‘Witchboy’. It’s about a boy who grows up in a family where boys become shapeshifters and girls grow up to be a witches. Problem is that he is really into witchcraft! Fun comic about family relationships, friendship, and defying gender norms, with really gorgeous and atmospheric art.

I saw the thumbnail and said “oh my god is that Heartstopper” - been following it online for a while. It’s so fluffy I love it. (Some not fluffy bits too but she’s so great with her content warnings.) Edit - I don’t remember if you’ve reviewed this already but have you read Nimoma by Noelle Stevenson? I got it as a gift and didn’t read it for a while and then I did and really liked it. Maybe you’ve checked it out already though!

Small correction, it was Elle Fanning, not Dakota, in the Mary Shelley film :P Also, I know you don't think you want to read more graphic memoirs, but I would still recommend a couple based on how you feel about The Best We Could Do and that you don't seem to have read according to your Goodreads - if you haven't updated that and actually have read these I apologise: MARBLES by Ellen Forney. It is about Forney's experience with getting diagnosed with bipolar and reflection of what getting treated for it would have on her as an artist. The art is so expressive in it and it's one of my favourite graphic novels. MAUS by Art Spiegelman. This is honestly a must for any graphic novel fan. Horrific account of his father's experiences with Holocaust. PERSEPOLIS by Marjane Satrapi. It's about Satrapi growing up under the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the impact on her life. FUN HOME and ARE YOU MY MOTHER? by Alison Bechdel. These do a lot of jumping back and forth as well, but they are also reflections on what her relationship with her parents has meant for her as a person, the former about her father with, the latter about her mother. She uses a lot of literary and psychological references which can get dense at times, but ugh, they both hit me on a personal level. Small note tho: I wrote my Comparative Literature bachelor thesis on trauma depictions in graphic memoirs about MAUS, PERSEPOLIS and FUN HOME so I might be a bit biased XD
@booksandquills
@booksandquills 5 жыл бұрын
Haha knew I should have double checked! I've read Persepolis, but should definitely reread, and loved Fun Home. I gave Maus a go, but it wasn't really my thing. I'll definitely check out Marbles, thanks for the recommendation, it sounds so interesting! Such a great topic for a thesis. Did you find that the professors were supportive? (I did mine on YA and they didn't really now what it was.)
@literaryliekki8341
@literaryliekki8341 5 жыл бұрын
@@booksandquills Ah good :D Yeah, they were pretty supportive of it, though, I believe Danish universities are a little more lax, at least mine - Aarhus University - is. Plus the assigned counselor for our class specialized in Children's Literature so he was perhaps a little more understanding of the whole unorthodox approach to literature. I'm actually currently working on rewriting that bachelor thesis into a script, along with some of my other exam assignments. As a part of my Literary Dissemination course I am to create a product and I decided to start a KZfaq channel with video essays about literature :)

My all time favourite book is Fungus the Bogeyman by Raymond Briggs. I love the art style which is detailed, dark and dirty, reflecting the subject. I love the style that portrays this fictional world as if it were a textbook. The book follows Fungus (a Bogeyman) around his normal life, looking at his family, his job, and his troubles with how Bogeymen live. Briggs uses Fungus's life to teach about the Bogeyman species and world. I read this book every few years and every time I forget how good it is and fall in love with it again.

I love the look of Mary and Frankenstein and am a fan of weird so "Tongues" is on my to read list now. Women in Battle looks like a good read for my niece. I get why you didn't like "We Did the Best We Could", but historical graphic novels that do manage to work (in my opinion) are "I Remember Beirut " and "A Game for Swallows" by Zeina Abirached and "Persepolis" by Majane Satrapi.

Did I spy that the love interests meet via rugby team in Heartstopper? Could this fill the void left after I gobbled up Check, Please by Ngozi Ukazu? :) Between those and one I’ve seen about fencing, I love how M/M romance w/a sports setting is becoming its own popular subgenre…

If you like Saga, you should also give East of West a try! And if you're into biblical mythology, I can definitely recommend Judas! The artwork is absolutely amazing, as is the story.
