Boost Leaks Test & When Do You See A Power Loss

As seen on ‪@ThatRacingChannel‬. In this test, you’ll see that we put together a basic experiment to test how various sized leaks can affect a turbocharged engine. How much harder does a turbocharger have to work to keep up with the set targeted boost? How much horsepower and torque get affected with a little or big leak? How does the engine behave? What does the exhaust back pressure look like during a pull? The results we found are interesting! Let’s take a look.

This was very cool! I would assume that a centrifugal supercharger system is much more negatively affected by boost leaks in the charge pipe system, as impeller speed is controlled solely by engine rpm in that case.

I think shaft speed will go up efficiency will go down until you hit the point where the turbo can't flow any more air.

You should do the exact same video but with exhaust manifold leaks. Take the ecu logic out of the equation do a locked 30% wgdc

Intercooler piping diameter, lag vs peak hp at same psi.

I’d like to see pipe diameter and intercooler sizing vs lag. Back in the day I could afford a large (Greddy) intercooler before I could a large single turbo and was told it would lag badly. I did it anyway and my datalogs showed little to no difference on street pulls. I’d love to see this quantified on the dyno and know where sizing begins to make an impact!

I reckon if these holes would have been done on the outside of an elbow the leaks would be more significant. Same, if these leaks would be on the inside of an elbow they'd be less significant. When I have to drill a coupler for a nipple to use as a boost source (not all turbos have a barb on the compressor housing) I usually drill for it on the outside of the elbow.
