In this video we do a fuel economy test on a 2014 RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI with an 8 speed automatic transmission to see how good the fuel economy is with modifications and a light foot. We found that driving this truck extremely conservatively and with these modifications we were able to squeeze out 27mpg miles per gallon from this truck over almost a 60 mile trip. This fuel economy was pretty good for a full sized truck and the results are quite impressive for a heavy v8 pickup truck. The mpg is a good indication that these trucks can be good on gas if you need it to be and with careful driving and maybe some helping mods!

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi V8. I’m currently averaging 20mpg. Thinking of installing Cold air intake, Headers, and exhaust. Hopeful to get more mileage. Maybe enough to counter a 2” level kit with 33” tires... kind of sold on keeping stock height seeing your truck getting 27mpg. That’s amazing.

At 1 time, my 9 year old 5.7 charger averaged over 28 back and forth to work everyday. And I never use cruise control because the car is still just a joy to drive.

I did pretty much what you did on my stock 2008 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi with mds, keeping it at 55-60 mph and got 27 mpg, which amazed me since normally I am lucky to get 20 mpg driving at 75mph. I attributed this to the lower speed, flat terrain, overdrive and the mds system which likely ran on 4 cylinders for the test period. Until your video I never mentioned it to anyone since I figured no one would believe a hemi could get such good mileage.

@@tinaalbritton3450 It's a late reply, but a lot of the newer RAMs call for 89. You should only put in what it recommends because the engine can't utilize higher most times. Therefore, unless you have preignition, there isn't a reason to run high octane.

Though we like to top off as much as possible when filling up, I would not recommend filling up to the point that you can actually see the fuel in the filler neck. Depending on the vehicles emissions control design, I can cause issues with the emissions charcoal canister from the fuel sloshing into the vapor fumes line. I cant count how many times I've had to replace these for people due to this. just food for thought.

Over several years of doing it every tank but he was doing it once for test purposes, I don't think he needs to trade it in just yet. Topping off's biggest shortcoming is the amount of your time you have wasted doing it. Unless you run your car until its out of gas everytime. Then you might get 10, maybe 15 yards closet or further from the gas station so even that gets mixed results lol

@High_Desert_Tanner 5 жыл бұрын
It's simply a tell tale that you are driving economically. If you accelerate really slowly, and use small throttle inputs it will come on. It tends to coincide with MDS kicking in, but it will also come on when you're not in MDS. I hope that makes sense lol
@alj5606
@alj5606 5 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention the green eco light which indicates that your engine is running on 4 cylinders instead of all 8 cylinders. Accelerate slowly so you can drive GREEN for the best mileage. Also, your tire pressure monitor was flashing. Better check your tire pressure. Low tire pressure will lower your gas mileage. Big Al

On my new 2022 Ram 1500 eTorque V6 4x4 - I took it on a back road outside Colorado Springs to Elizabeth Colorado, a hours drive of about 54 miles with speeds from 45 to 55 mph and my fuel consumption rate as per computer was 31 MPG and back in Town got 23 using pump 87 Octane at Valero. I'm sure the 31 MPG is just a fluke and more likelihood of 29+ MPG I am keeping an eye on it Truck has 16,000 miles on it.

Most every RAM 1500 V8 owner complains their fuel mileage compared to the EPA mileage. But almost every Ram 1500 sold with a V8 is equipped with 3.92 Axle Ratio, rather than the Standard 3.23 Axle which is how the truck is equipped for the EPA Fuel Milage Test. The 3.92 gives the truck a Higher Towing Rating and it can be equipped with a Electric Locker Rear Axle. It also makes for quicker acceleration. The 3.23 Cannot be equipped with the Electric Locker (No reason given) the Towing Rating is lower and it accelerates slower. The 3.23 axle compared to the 3.92 axle results in a Engine RPM Reduction of 22% which equates to lower fuel consumption at any given vehicle speed, less engine wear and less engine noise. So unless you are towing heavy loads, or drag racing, RAM sold you a axle ratio that hurts fuel efficiency, but the EPA Rating looks good for advertising. Personally, I find RAM ‘s method of Ignoring the Intent of EPA rules to be Unethical. No Where in RAM advertising is it mentioned that the Costly Optional 3.92 Axle Ratio WILL Increase Fuel Consumption, making it even more Costly to the Buyer and Harmful to the planet.

Ummmm dont think so. Fill up at same pump, same way you (IE: stop on second pump cut off) drive at least 100 mile loop, go back to the same pump and repeat fill up. Will get an accurate hand calc that way. Unfortunately most tuners screw up the onboard mpg gauge. I think they do it deliberately as if no one hand calcs and would believe the now inaccurate mpg gauge. Superchips may be one of the few that doesnt do this. Its good to see someone doing mpg videos , I always thought MDS was a good idea despite many people disabling it. EFAN and exhaust will definitely improve mpg.

I've done this test and seen a few others kn youtube do it in a ram. I find the dash is almost spot on if all highway. Start mixing city driving, work commutes, etc it starts to lie. I pulled off in my 3.21 ram going 60 mph for 90 miles, 26 mpg from my family's land west of Weatherford all the way back to my home in frisco, tx area. Dash was spot on. Now my work commute and a whole bunch of other random trips to the grocery store, etc says I'm getting 17.5ish. Driving grandpa style this tank in reality got about 1.5-2 mpg less then what the dash was saying. Pretty crazy, I was in the high 15s-16mpg. All highway she's accurate most the time from my experience. I really want to do the fan mod, and the shorty's. I just hate to mess with the grill shutters and I dont want to spend all the money on a tuner to adjust the fan temps and all that. I just added a drop in k&n filter and I can tell that the truck does not feel as bogged down in mds mode as it used to, just from a drop in filter... also about 1-2mpg better on the highway.

This doesn’t seem to far fetched because you were going like 60 or less and were babying it. Wonder what you get on more combined trips. My crew cab, 3.92, 4wd with 34” tires averages 17 MPG unmodified. I gas it here and there and usually am something over the speed limit not wildly over though.

Fact is, drag increases with the square of speed, and drag is what a vehicle as large as the Ram is going to be mostly overcoming. Its very likely you'd get better fuel economy at 40mph. The one thing that's for certain is that all vehicles will do better at 55mph than 65mph.

I have a 2017 with 3.21 4x4 with 8000 miles and I drive it easy and mostly highway miles and when I check it at the pump and I have multiple Times the best I have ever got is 21 mpg and I’m always 1 or 2 mpg less then what it shows on the dash

@BoostedMotorsports 6 жыл бұрын
Oddly people with 3.21 gears seem to report worse mileage that the 3.92 trucks. It's supposed to be the other way around but maybe the truck has to work harder to maintain that speed at a lower RPM. My RPM is still relatively low on the highway though with the 3.92 gear

Hey Chad Brown, Your very lucky at 21mpg, I also have a 17 Ram 1500 4x4 with 3:21 gears w/6" lift and 37x20's. I dont even see 15mpg. It has almost 30,000 miles. These new trucks are a joke. I used to have a 94 chevy stepside 350 with a 4" lift and 3" body lift on 35's 3:73 gears and hardly ever had to put gas in. I had a stock 14 Ram with 3:21's and what a difference. Probably 17 to 19 locally and trips a bit over 20. So anyone be prepared for shit mileage if your gonna lift em. I will have to get some videos on here of mine. Lots of $$$ invested.

I used to test a product for MPG on several different brands and models of vehicles. You need more than 50 miles for an accurate calculation. do a full tank before doing the math. You'll also see how the difference in distance effects the calculations. We used a Lab in Ontario California to get official numbers for our product using a dynometer along with high tech equipment using EPA Standards for exhaust and MPG. (What the manufacturers use for their official MPG numbers) But they didn't go as I am saying using a full tank for their numbers (Real Life) but MPG does change using at greater distances compared to short runs because of topographical differences. That's why people rarely get the official MPG numbers put out by the manufacturer. its all LAB controlled test results It might not be that significant but you are a detail oriented person and did notice a difference topping it off across the street so I thought I'd point that out. I don 't even get half of what you showed here but mine is an 07. the biggest fail on that besides the exhaust is the slider window leaking filling up the two bowls under the seat meant for storage. I've been stuck on KZfaq for like 3 hours watching your videos, I agree with everyone else, your very talented in "how to" video production. Thank you
