You're struggling to conjugate verbs because you're not supposed to conjugate verbs. Language isn't maths where we take a word, apply a formula and then arrive at the correct outcome for output. It's listen repeat. It would pay you to look up Stephen Krashen.

Also, presence of stress shift is something useful to remember, as a finer point.

Explanation through examples helps better.

I have often struggled with the verbs for this very reason. I never knew how many conjugation systems there were, but I've noticed so many verbs which don't fit the main two types of conjugations, such as verbs ending in -овать (present tense stem without -ов-), -пить (куплю), -бить (люблю), and -ечь; писать (there are two verbs for this) and so on. I'm going to watch your video now. It's so useful and should make a difference.

I tried so many times to register for the Russian verb drills and checked my spam but found nothing. I am getting other things from Boost your Russian but not the verb drills.

This was very eye opening! Thank you for this I've always looked at "irregular" verbs like "мочь", "хотеть" and wondered if their "irregularity" simply results from how the "т -> ч -> ж ~ г" sounds are so close sounding to each other, almost on a continuum Eg; if you say "хотет" repeatedly, you end up pretty close to "хочет". Croatian, for example, has a number of distinct "ch" sounds where this is more pronounced

If you stop a random Russian native speaker in the street and ask him/her what a conjugation is, he/she will almost certainly answer that "I don't know/care". Yet all of them speak Russian fluently. I think it's better just to improve your vocabulary (preferably not just separate words, but words connected into short meaningful sentences) and use them.

Hello Kristina! I just finished the training video, but I'm still confused about something. If all verbs that end in 'авать' conjugate in the same way, which is removing 'ть' and the preceding syllable 'ва', then why does 'плавать' keep the preceding syllable 'ва' when conjugated?

I beg to differ: having taught languages for over twenty years (English, Russian, Italian), I DO believe that these verbs are irregular. The point is that you are changing the definition. In ALL HUMAN LANGUAGES, completely irregular verbs are very few (the verb быть in Russian, for example), all the others follow OLD PATTERNS, which are not productive anymore. Of course you may identify these patterns, but in most cases there is no way you can attribute a verb to a precise pattern unless you have already memorized it. For instance, if you see the infinitive жить, how can you possibly guess that it is conjugate живёшь and not like пить, for instance? You cannot, simple as that. For regular verbs, this is not the case: I see читать, for example, and I perfectly know how to conjugate it. So, the verbs you mentioned are ALL IRREGULAR. You may identify patterns, right, but that will not immediately help you, and it will only make sense after you have come across other IRREGULAR verbs which follow the same pattern (this doesn't happen with regular verbs). This is the way modern linguistics views irregular verbs, in practically all human languages. What is more, I would like to mention an old Latin saying which scientists have been preaching for decades: "Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem", that is, "being (entities, items) should not be multiplied when necessary". In other words, the conjugations are only useful if you identify a limited number of clear and easy to remember cases, so two, three or four conjugations are practical for learning purposes, but if you "create" a new category every time an item doesn't fit, you end up having a beautifully designed, useless system, which will not help you learn any faster or better. This is based on both the linguistic literature and my personal experience on the field, for over twenty years.

I get what you say in the video but for me it seems like you want to make it look hard when it's not😅 my language has 3 main conjugation patterns, there are some "irregular verbs" which follow other kinds of patterns, but I think what books do in order to be practical and organized for people is to present the main conjugation groups... Sure there are other ones, but they are minority. Tbh I don't think is too practical to learn more patterns when there are not so many verbs like that, I think when you get involved with the language is just like "instinct". Sorry maybe I'm being ignorant, I'm a beginner but Ive learn 5 languages and verbs havent been that problematic. I've learnt the two groups (+1b and 1c) in russian just as my book said and I can conjugate several verbs in russian withouth that much effort tbh
