I actually collect these bootlegs so I can hopefully fill in some of the blanks! As far as I know, these boolegs were distributed in China/HK around 1998-1999 which is why they only run v1-v5 with no bootleg V6. There are quite a few differences between them and the original release devices. The hardware (screen/board) are super low quality. Hard to see screens with bad ghosting and faulty capacitors/resonators are way more common on these than the originals. The shells for this whole line of bootlegs (v1-v5, lots of lovely colors,) use Japanese front half shell molds with the Japanese style cage frame, and English back half shell molds. The shell's screwposts are prone to shattering too and the shells usually have some minor imperfections Programming-wise they're REALLY close to the originals, which make me think someone stole an unfinished prototype from the original factory to clone them All the sprites are identical, and the device battles identify as the correct version and Digimon, but it's impossible for the Digimon to get injured. The Digimon takes WAY more care mistakes to get killed off too, which means you can neglect it without too much of an issue. I feel like the evolutions are a little jumbled up because of this too. It genuinely does just feel like a 95% finished original device. Also despite being based on the English shells, the boards run entirely in Japanese. There were some other curiosities too but I'm struggling to remember what they were, They're kind of interesting and definitely worth picking one up if you see one cheap enough!

I have two bootlegs with box that I got for fairly cheap. They worked when I got them, now they don't. I'd like to get them running again. I'm glad I have them. I know some people wouldn't want them but they actually work well when they do work.

That device is awesome! So to be clear, the board inside is an official v4 board. Was the bootleg board damaged? I’m curious if the bootleg board played the same as the official v4 device. You mentioned that the bootleg was using reject parts, but I wonder if the boards were official rejects, too. Either way, thanks for sharing!!

Hey dude! So yeah, the actual bootleg board is still programmed the same as a ver.4 and functions the same, but the screen has terrible shadowing, they often have connection and power issues too. So yeah, pretty sure the entire thing is entirely made of rejected parts

Very possible, it can clearly chip off, and as it’s a bootleg it will have been made as cheaply as humanly possible, so not a shell I’d ‘trust’ as such 😅

This is not bootleg. Status icon is genuine japanese version icon. And inside board is genuine japanese ver.4. Maybe someone artificially separated inner board and outer bootleg case modified.😢

As I said in the video, the board is a genuine ver.4 board that I had put in. The box and the shell is bootleg, and the board that came with the device (which isn’t featured in this video) was also a bootleg.

Most of them can, but I think some might have connection issues due to being made with reject parts
