I really admire how creative & innovative they are in tackling adversity. Not been invited for broadcast variety show? “okay no problem we create our own”. Not asking us smart/meaningful questions?? “Well, we got weverse”. You want to restrict our screen time and interaction with fan? “There’s Twitter, Vlive and KZfaq”. My sister who have been kpop fans for a long time said BTS move are always so different, it seems like so strategically calculated but somehow it is actually genuine and organic. The thing with the boys also is that they are very consistent in whatever they do. I am so proud of them.

Exo, 2ne1 and I think Got7 had characters before BTS but BT21 is the most popular and most developed. A BIG EDIT- Don't bother believing the comment below from @Michael Ogboru. They're clearly new to kpop and are spreading misinformation and unfortunately before this edit, 20 people think it's fact 😔 2ne1's characters was from 2011. It was a tie in with their music video 'Hate You'. GOT 7 released usb characters for their album in 2014. Each member had a character. YG/ Big Bang had Krunk. He was first released in 2013 in Lee Hi's video and ever since then, there has been a Big Bang X Krunk edition for every comback they've had, their outfits and each member that had a solo. Exo also had characters and a universe/ story line from debut. (Though I don't remember when their characters merch were released). BTS had a webtoon Hip Hop Monsters in 2014 and had merch a while later, clearly years after others did. BT21 was in collaboration with Line and Tiny Tan came later in 2019. Like I already said, BTS has the most developed characters but they were not the first to create them. As a fandom, some of y'all complain that people like to discredit BTS's accoplishments. Well if you know how that feels, then don't do it to other Idols too.

Just saying, the things BTS started, like having a twitter account, doing youtube vids and making their own variety show were created as a means to cope with discrimination from the industry because they were from a small company and were "nugus". All these things that they started was so organic and genuine and was rooted in creativeness in order to reach out their sincerity to more people. Obviously, all these gave BTS their edge, back then which made them into who they are now and even if lots of kpop groups are now doing these concepts, they probably still won't reach BTS's success with these concepts since they lack that certain uniqueness that BTS once brought.

I actually think that the reason for BTS having created so many trends has to do with the fact that they didn’t have much back then. In order to survive as a group of a small company they had to stick out somehow and gain fans by means that didn’t require much money or reputation. What I am trying to say, if you don’t have much, you have to be creative to get by and that’s exactly what they did.

i remember when bts react to their own music video and i thought “woah, no other artists does this right-“ i need to check again if it’s bts themselves reacting to their own music video. it was a wild ride, as i’m a fan since fire era. and how they hype each other is so amazing: always seen reactions from fans but never the artists until bts. and also, when suga unboxing the group’s album. i thought it was a big hit staff unboxing it. never can’t think of any other artists that would do this. most artists would think it was “spoiler” but it’s actually not. it’s good marketing. as for having youtube channels, i was a hardcore fan of a kpop group that i don’t want to mention as it will start fanwars and still is. but i only got to see the group more when they are on variety shows which is kinda sad because i want to see more. and then i found out about bts through their KZfaq videos and then i just wait for their comeback fire, as the trailer premieres. at first i thought bts are just people who want to make it in kpop, never thought it’s the artists themselves that documented their everyday life as artists in the industry. another thing is that i notice bts has a lot of extra variety shows that are made only for them and no other artists are guests in those shows. i thought it was so cool. as bts can actually be their 100% self without these “hosts” get in their way with them playing the game and just having fun and sometimes break the rules. it was so cool to see. i used to hate halloween dance practice and thought that bts are just silly ass street performer that are practicing for a show at a party. never again thought it was bts. i love the halloween dance practice more as it showcase their talent as well as them having fun doing so. when bts reveal their new logo, i thought other artists has their fandom’s logo too. it was so sweet of them to include us. - all these trends are honestly a shock to me because i never seen any other artists does it before. and actually we’re jealous of army because they got that much content of bts. my hatred and jealousy turns me into an army that streamed their music all the time as well as understanding their lyrics and connect with it and someone that sees how BTS PAVED THE WAY for the industry, the most things bts does casually without the intention to gain popularity, i notice all of that and that’s why i’m an army. (even during fire era, i hate them. i started become REAL ARMY that listen to their music without prejudice is after fake love. deep down i know how catchy their music is- just don’t want to admit it- but now damn, they’re the only artist i can see why stanning them is a right choice)

BTS absolutely popularized online variety show. And that's one of the reason why Army stay loyal. We have free content every weeks. So, we didn't get bored. Also the reason why they got international army ( early 2015) because bts run have English subtitles, and we can watched whatever time we want. Unlike other idol launch their variety shows on national TV, we didn't get eng sub, we can't watch it for free, we didn't know where to watch it. BTS isn't the first group i stand but i didn't get any content to watch except their MVs, and dance practice, so it's kinda boring to watch it over and over and over again. But BTS always gave new content, the old bangtan bomb is the best, bighit gave free content with good quality (if I'm not wrong since 2017 they start doing it on VLIVE+, and that's need money) so the bangtan bomb nowadays is kinda just to follow the tradition. Somehow I'm glad they didn't come from big company, because if they did I'm pretty sure, bts run wouldn't ever happened.

I've been an army since 2016 but I used to listen to other groups like 2NE1, SNSD and Big Bang way before and yes, I can confirm. We saw a lot of changes and similarities, especially since 2017 that was when Bangtan won Top Social artist on the BBMAs. BTS will be always trendsetters 🔥 I really admire all the creativity and hard work that BigHit, the staff and the members put to survive. They literally made k-pop more fun interactive with fans. For a reason, there's no bigger connection and affection than BTS and ARMY. The guys genuinely care about their fans and want to be close and just natural. 🥺💜💜 btw They also popularized characters goods (like BTS HipHop monsters, BT21, Funko BTS POP, TinyTan..)

being an early army i remember everything but never realized why, I tried to listen to exo upon someone's recommendation in 2012 & only korean & chinese videos popped up so it didn't piqued my interest but when I listened to bts in 2015 there was so much content out there, I was sucked into it, I fell in love with the boys personality before listening to their discography. BTS's success isn't a fluke, it came with the ahead of time marketing & bts, staff, & army working hard, putting more & more content out there so it can reach more ppl & what can I say the boys charisma & music wins us all, it's light in the end of the tunnel.

man I've been a fan of BTS for so long and been in the kpop community even longer. But this video is finally making me realize how many things BTS started/evented/trended just bc they didn't have the resources or power to make themselves known otherwise. I mean, lets be real, promoting kpop on youtube (other than MVs & performances) itself was done by bts. It baffles me to see how future-forward Bangtan & BigHit were despite having SO many other shits to worry about. They thrived to make themselves work instead of sitting back and waiting for results of only music shows/album sales to come in. Honestly, I'll always give kudos to BTS members and their management team for making this much effort despite having no concrete hope in the early days. Another thing I've always applauded BTS for is how astonishingly they've been free of ANY scandals as individuals or a group. The only other artist I know which was THIS transparent and loyal is SVT and maybe SHINee (excluding dating scandals bc those should not be called scandals at all).

came here for a fun watch but was surprised because this video was very informative and accurate! of course i don't expect this video to be an exhaustive list, but i'd like to add another trend (perhaps the biggest) - which is the whole 'love yourself' agenda in kpop/kbiz! i've been involved in kpop as far as 2009, so i'm pretty sure no one before bts has promoted self-loving as much as they do. since the release of the 'love yourself' series, many kpop idols start to gear their focus to loving oneself, opposing to the previously dominant concept of romantic love. a sub-trend to this is the emphasis of psychological concepts such as self, persona, etc. it is certain that this stems from namjoon's own extensive knowledge and interest for these subjects, and that's why no one before bts has really paid attention to this concept, only in recent years (i won't name any idols here but this is evident looking at vcrs, concepts, songs these days!). other trends that i can think of are the promotion of hanbok/korean culture, the concept of an alternate universe and connected worlds, collaboration between kpop and western idols, etc.
@musicalnrrd272
@musicalnrrd272 Жыл бұрын
I love your explanations and examples of all of the ways that bts paved the way for current kpop idol trends and content! I'd just like to add on to your explanation about bts and variety shows from their early days and why they started making run bts. When they first debuted it was really difficult for bts to get a spot on Korean variety shows, and when they /were/ invited, they didn't get much screen time so it was hard promoting themselves that way. As bts started to gain popularity around 2014/2015, and especially in 2015 after they got their first music show win with I Need U, bts were invited to a bunch of variety shows. But because they were from a small company, and their group concept was so different from other groups at the time, they got a lot of mistreatment and disrespect from the hosts of some of the shows and given how they were treated when the cameras were ON, I'm sure they were treated even more poorly behind the scenes. So when vlive launched and they were chosen to help promote it, they came up with run bts as their own variety show where it would be just them and they wouldn't have to put up with the same hosts that looked down on them when they started out anymore. 💜

I wouldn't call myself an Army, but I have followed BTS since their debut. I used to be Baby (B.A.P's stan) and since their disbandment I don't follow Kpop much anymore including BTS. I know very well about their popularity growth and how different it is from their early days. Back then, I wasn't mature enough to actually understand the hardship they're going through (they're just another talented boy groups that I like back then). Now watching all your videos gave me understatement about how harsh Kpop was back then to non-big 3 and how BTS striving through all of it. I somehow realized that's maybe why B.A.P didn't last, as they weren't from Big 3 as well, and their company was being unfair. So I believe that another reason BTS is holding on, is also because BigHit do whatever they can for BTS. They really invest wholeheartedly for BTS and it shows. They really look for ways for BTS to promote even in harsh media environment you mentioned. I can't help but feel a little bit emotional. I remembered boy group I used to like, and I'm also touched with all the hard work BTS and their company have put for this. Come to think of it, It's so easy for non-fan to say that BTS is overrated and became mainstream. Disregarding BTS' hardships and whatsoever. But god, if you look at it from this perspective, I can't think of any other group that deserves this. Opportunity comes to those who prepared for it... they're completely prepared, creative, and hard working.

Tbh I didn’t notice how much BTS, ARMY, and their production/marketing team influenced and shaped the kpop industry and fandom culture until I watched these videos from boracity… because, as someone else has mentioned, all the social media engagement, free personality content, performance direction, and album marketing (pre-releases/release dates/music chart and award priorities), etc. are now so integrated into and standard to the structure of kpop, that it seems like the industry has always been this way, since the beginning. As if all of it had long been established before BTS, when in reality, it’s quite recent. I finally get what Hoshi meant in the Suchwita episode… I’m grateful for the content and performances the trends have brought us, but I honestly feel bad how much more groups need to do now as the norm… BTS be the overachievers who set the curve, and now everyone else gotta do a crap ton more stuff if they want to meet the grade 😭

BTS and Army also popularized about 1st 24 hours MVs views. Back then Army didn't have many to show off to other fandom, so we kinda said "BTS has the most 24 hour views if we combined 1theK and bighit ent views (Fire mv). And then they try to break the record which succeed. But then ARMY take it back with BS&T (only 3M, that was a big deal back then, that was our pride) but then BLINK break the record and then ARMY took it back, BLINK break it again, but ARMY took it back again and has never been break until now.
