Bordeaux Wine Basics - 5th Growth Wines (Part 1)

2 жыл бұрынThere were originally 17 Fifth Growth wines in the 1855 Classification system but Batailley has split into 2 wineries so now there are 18 Fifth Growth wines. Part 1 will cover the first 9 wineries They are (in order of listing in 1855, based on price per barrel):
Château Pontet-Canet - (Pauillac)
Château Batailley - (Pauillac)
Château Haut-Batailley - (Pauillac)
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste - (Pauillac)
Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse - (Pauillac)
Château Lynch-Bages - (Pauillac)
Château Lynch-Moussas - (Pauillac)
Château Dauzac - (Margaux)
Château d'Armailhac - (Pauillac)
Couple of apologies: 1/ still got "Puy" wrong...it should be pronounced "Pwee". Also, I mentioned Clerc Milon...I keep saying "Million"...not sure why I am doing this but just something I have to change. I also got the order of the Batailley/Grand Puy wines wrong. When I merge the sections, put them in the wrong order.
Anyways, would be interested in what others think.

I drank all of these wines that you presented here, just one bottle of which one. And for my personal taste/pleasure, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste was my champion…mainly because of a glorious vanilla note that it showed to me. Really delicious red wine! And then, right in the second place, I would put Château Pontet-Canet.

Enjoying seeing these, some of these in good vintages are almost matching first growth prices in bad vintages in Norway. Pontet Canet 2010 fetching approx. 370 $ while Haut-Brion 2011 going for approx. 399$ I hope you could do a similar ranking of the second-wines, it would be interesting to see if they stack up pretty much like the first-wines between eachother, or if they distribute themselves differently.

Alexander: wow....I would always take a first growth ahead of any other classified wine. I probably won't do a full video on all 2nd wines but I do have some thoughts (again, may be controversial) on 2nd wines in general so perhaps I will do a video on this in the near future. Cheers!

Thanks good video, the issue is that the market is so efficient now… the best of these 6 which is clearly Pontent Canet and Lynch Bages are essentially priced as second growths, which if they redid the classification today they would be…

Daniel: you will do have to react quickly so that is why you need to create your own hypothesis and not follow the critics or else you will always be chasing. Cheers!

I drank one bottle of Château Dauzac, 2006 vintage. It was a good wine in my opinion. I gave it four stars in Vivino app. But I must recognize that it was a “serious” wine, with tight tannins.

I do recall the bottle I drank was tannic, which I thought was unusual for Margaux. Cheers!

Great videos as always! Definitely have a much better understanding of the 1855 Classificationp! Just want to clarify; did you put Pontet Canet ahead of Lynch Bages or was it the other way around?

Managed to find a Grand-Puy-Lacoste '05. Drinking it as we speak. In general I have been very disappointed by the "legendary" vintage but this one seems to perform very well. High in concentration as I expect from Pauillac. Cheers.

Hi there, great video I enjoyed all of your information and review. I have acquired a 2017 gran puy Lacoste and with no knowledge of wines like this, my question is what should I do with it? How long do I leave it sat at home?

Joe: thanks for viewing my video and your question. Grand Puy Lacoste is a great wine but I am a little down on the 2017 vintage. I think wait a few years and then open it up. Or you could just open it up right now with 3-4 hours decant. My current belief is 2017 won't be a vintage that lasts too long so you should be able to drink now and for the 8-10 year. Great. In the Netherlands Lynch bages is the highest valued wine. I like also their second wine Echo/averous. Dauzac somewhat inderdaad the radar, but has a nice label anyway. Counts for something 🙂

Roeland: thank you for viewing my video and you comment. Interesting as Lynch I know 10 years ago would have usurped all other 5th growths in terms of pricing. If that is case, you may be able to get a deal in the Netherlands on Pontet. Maybe I was too harsh on Dauzac but really can't see why I would drink it other than to say I had it. Andy: thanks for viewing my video. For your questions: 1/ There are a lot but I really like 2009. I just had 2016 and although you, still beautiful. You can drink off vintages like 2011-2014 and 2017 now also...maybe doesn't have the intensity of some of the warmer vintages but depending on the price, I would mind drinking them. ; 2/ 2010, 2016 & 2018. 2023 futures are priced very nice also. Super! I am working my way through your other videos and found them very informative. I bought a 2023 future from my local wine store for $89 USD. Not bad at all for a highly rated vintage!

So if I understand correctly, the 5th growths are the lowest level of Bordeaux grand cru wines? Are there any other classes below grand cru in Bordeaux? Like in Burgundy you have premier cru below grand cru and they are still often extremely good wines, is there something similar in Bordeaux?

MsJavaWolf: no according to the 1855 Classification System but there were other (later) classification systems. The one that might interest you is the Cru Bourgeois in the Medoc region but there were almost 200 wines ranked so from my perspective, too many to have any significant meaning. Also St. Emilion (Right Bank) has their own classification system which I will hopefully make a video on in the future. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

Just purchased an 03 and 08 pontet canet, have you drunk either of these vintages? And are they ready to drink or hold?

Tomas: thank you for viewing my video and your question. I have had both are although you can hold both, both are ready to drink with 2-4 hours of aeration in a decanter. LCBO released some old vintages a few weeks ago, $149 for 2012 GPL, good Price?

Got a 2019 GPL for €78.. good price i think.. Most 2019 Bordeaux wines in my cellar are around 13.5 alc. but i saw on the GPL2019 that it is 14.5… wow…

RB: I think that is a reasonable price for GPL. I am big on 2019 Bordeaux wines and not so hot on the 2017 vintage. Cheers!

@@TrophyWineHunter 2018 and 2019 are the first vintages I really invested in. The 2018 wines are all high in alcohol, but 2019 is on average at 13.5% alc. I'm surprised that GPL has a percentage of 14.5% in 2019 with 83% cabernet sauvignon. I wonder if this wine has a nice freshness.. 14.5 is high for Pauillac…

Could not help my self this time. But bought a Chateau Pontet Canet 1948 from an auction. Eighter it will taste like s**t or like great fruity nuts 🙂 Great video, thank you alot!

Daniel: tell me how it goes. Not familiar with the 1948 vintage so hope you didn't pay too much for it. These are all red wines. The 1855 classification did not include white wines, I believe, except for the sweet dessert wines, eg Sauternes. The color of these wines will vary based on vintage, but since they are made to age, they will generally be quite tannic and darker than budget wines. The bottles he is showing have all been consumed, so there’s no way for him to show what their color was.

Gerry: thank you for viewing my video. If you are looking for individual wine reviews, you can check out the other videos on my channel. This is just a basic series to explain Bordeaux wine...we start with the 1855 Classification System and I have done I think 5-6 videos in this series that are all contained in my Bordeaux Basics playlist. As Modular Landing has stated, the bottles are just here as props to let you know what the bottle looks like. I don't go through in detail each wine although in my wine reviews, I actually have a section where you see the color of the wine (which actually other people have commented no one else does!) I actually normally go through the entire bottle myself or at least enough of it that I get a really good sense of the wine. I understand your feeling. I get annoyed too when people talk about wine but don't actually taste it. But these videos are really about general knowledge. Hope that makes sense. Please like, subscribe and keep watching!
