BORDER COLLIE THAT LUNGES AT CARS.
lunging at cars is extremely dangerous, if the dog slips the lead, if the lead slips out of your hand, if the lead snaps or even if the dog is off the lead, it could result in death.
If your dog does this, it’s something you need to address or get professional help if you can’t do it, straight away.
Also, how cute is this dog ?? ❤️

"There is a clear message". That's all dog training is. Clear communication about what's expected. It's kind of like presenting the dog with a puzzle. In this case lunging at cars = leash pop, sitting and staying calm = rewards. Once she's worked out the puzzle, learning has happened.

So good to see other bc owners in the comments with this same problem. I'll see other border collies walking in town without any problem and it made me feel so alone with mine! Gentle leader helped a little so at least he wasn't choking or lunging as much. Just ordered a training collar and have been working on heel & break.

Our one year BC goes crazy stalking and attacking lots trucks and lawn care machines. HELP! Otherwise he os awesome. We rescued him!

My girl does this with bikes, motor bikes and scooters. She even barks and all. Knows leave it but not working when they're going passed. Definitely trying just the sit. Thank you for your training videos.

I had same issue with my collie when she was a pup, trained her the same way. Works a treat. I had her on a halty as too just for extra safety as her collar ring broke one time she lunged. (They don’t get the same opportunity to pull in a halty). Worst experience ever So I never took the chance again while I was training on the road. Had it cracked in a weekend and she was leading perfect and off the halty in no time. Good demo here!

My collie is lunging at cars. She'll lie down (without me asking her to) then she'll try to run at the car once it's passing. I've tried to distract her with treats but she is so fixated on the car, I get ignored. I live in a rural area and we have to walk on the tiny roads, she's only 4 months old just now bit soon she'll be big enough to overpower me, I'm so worried she'll get hurt. I'll give the slip lead ago and hopefully get better results.

i've got a working line border collie, and even today when we were herding actual sheep, she hears the car, and today it was obvious more than ever, that she actually fears it. the way she looked at it was like "please dont come this way" as if she is already busy... i will try to adopt this method of giving treats for having her stay calm when a car approaches. just not treat when she looks and pulls forward. i wont allow her to fixate on the cars, though cars are here to stay. hope it make sense what and wrote, and hope you get to get your collie to chill too :)

I feel your pain😅 I have a working lines border collie and we live in a rural part of Northern California, so walking on narrow roads is pretty dangerous for us.

Thanks so much! I've got a 8 month rescue arriving in a couple of weeks and apparently chasing cars is her favourite game. I feel a little more prepared on how to help her now. The only thing is apparently she's not very treat orientated! 😅

How do you get the dog to listen? My collie does not listen when he sees a car at all! But when off the lead he is so well behaved!

We have a 75lb Goldendoodle that does this as well, although he's more selective about which vehicles he will lunge at. He's usually unbothered by UPS/FedEx/Garbage trucks, but loses his mind over cars/SUVs... especially ones with loud colors/exhaust. Some walks are better than others. He's also a houdini when it comes to slipping out of his collar, so I walk him on harness.

My border collie lunges and spins around in circles when they is a car going past. Been trying to train him out of it for nearly 2 years its very difficult. Im gonna try this now

My French Bulldog too. He lunges at the car, garbage truck, people on walk especially kids and elders. I’ve training him this and it seemed to work for normal cars and he’s better off the busy road, maybe because he has too many to chase on and couldn’t decide which one he was going to chase but with garbage trucks and people walk pass it didn’t work he lunged really bad and it’s no chance for rewarding at all. It’s really hard because we avoid the situation that he gets reactive too. We go on a walk in very early morning or late evening where there is no other dogs.

Taught my collie this from the moment we got her. For 2.5 years she never lunged at a car. Now 2 weeks ago she's started lunging at cars. I put her in a sit but she'll lunge past me. I think its to do with cars passing by fast and doesn't give us space, but i still have to train her not to do it, for her safety. Tips?? :)

My BC never chased cars until she was 8 months old and I took her on holiday to a cottage by the road and every time she saw a car go past she chased it, then at first it was the odd snap/lunge and now it's full on pull me towards cars, shes fine with buses and lorries though its just cars and vans, she got off the lead recently and chased a car down the road trying to herd it, whenever I see a car coming if I stop and get her to lie down she either just watches the car pass with her ears perked or does a tiny pull, if she sees a car normally she goes into the head down ready to pounce mode. She is seeing a trainer in a few weeks

My 5 month old kelpie is already learning to sit when cars go past which is good but I have to walk along a busy road sometimes and it’s hard to walk when she sits every 2 metres🤣 is there any other way to get her to stop lunging at them ?

Brilliant! After seeing that video I can't wait to get my car-jumping collie out to see if it will work with him. One question, did you use a special collar or was a slip lead sufficient?

he uses a slip lead to get proper controll you can see the lead is up on the higher part of the neck to controll better

So I having been trying to sort this problem out for 2 years now with little improvement with our BC. Generally I use a halti as he is a big dog and it gives me more power. I was advised to use a check chain but he overrides it and pulls even more .Help !

Mines the same it’s in there nature to heard it means you’ve got a great pure breed of border collie !! leave it !! Is a good command to teach him around the house too with treats and toys I get mine to sit when a cars coming and say leave it good luck mate

that is so weird my girl does that too!? she is exactly the same type too a short haired only black n white. i know training i8 essential, but i wanted to know why sne does?! never in my life seen a dog exhibit this kind of behavior except for a cartoon lol! my dog was a rescue dog an the drive home was no picnic she went from one end of our van down to the other bashing her face up against the windows all the way down! i'm wondering if its their hearing? mine seems to do it moreso now to loud potato trucks or trailer trucks. and as of last night we were having a party an i put a single candle on the cake an she cried n cried. i tried everything to silence it even putting it in a container an putting outside she could still hear it to the point it made her cry???

If you still read these comments, I have the same with my Collie and this simply don't work. Before the 2nd clip at 2mins you must have done something to help.

it depends on the dog ofc. It the behavior is too incorporated, you need something more. Like stomping one time with your leg and saying 'no' if they lunge anyway to snap them out of their concentration.

My 10 months old rescue lunges at cars, tries to chase them. She's the same with joggers and cycles. She's not aggressive but wants to play chase with them. Will try this method and hopefully it will work

Mine also barks at kids that's fun kids get scared not so fun but barks in a playful way but doesn't seem like it to them the barking at cars is much worse she's very reactivate and then turns and starts jumping and biting my coat or trousers yep

My bc won't listen or respond to treats or commands when a vehicle goes by just lunges and barks ive tried his favourite toy , ive tried commands and also treats he will not take notice of anything other that the vehicles

Your dog sounds like it needs a herding job, recommend you try training herd ball with your dog. Will give it the outlet of energy and herding instinct it has. I do it with mine and it doesn't take long for him to tire cos he's so focused. Try that or try flirt pole sessions before going to do car training to let some energy out!

I think if you watch the video, you'll see that the trainer gets the dog's attention before the dog goes into hyper drive. That is the trick. You have to be vigilant and quick. Get the dog's attention before anything really happens. Teach the dog to focus on you, or the treat, or both, while a vehicle is passing. I adopted a 1 yr old BC a few years ago and he lunged and barked and high pitch yelped at anything that moved, including snow mobiles on trails. It was my first time having to deal with anything like that. I did a lot of training with him at home, teaching him all kinds of things, to create a bond and to teach him to focus on me. I never did what this trainer did, using treats (although that probably would have been quicker and easier), I mostly would turn my dog away from the vehicle and keep him that way as much as possible until the vehicle was well past. I live in a rural area and my dog is off leash most of the time so the vehicles would have to be far enough away that my dog wouldn't take off in a chase. Then lots of praise. And eventually it was successful. My dog no longer chases vehicles. I keep him in a halter that has two leash connection points, one on top and one in front of the chest, and it has a grab handle on top that I use all the time. The front connection point is great if the dog is pulling a lot. It makes it much easier to control the dog.
