Regardless of which country you're in, it sounds like there's something wrong with your car.

A really interesting film and explanation of road changes. Hoping to visit Northern Ireland and the ROI for the first time from the UK.

☀️ Sunny Days ☀️ Northern Ireland IS the UK. You probably mean from Great Britain

Can you imagine doing this if the Republic of Ireland decided to compliment their adoption of kilometres with driving on the right most other EU countries.

It is lucky that they also drive on the left in Ireland ... Would be tricky otherwise!

there were no welcome signs lol

Why there's no Country road sign at the boarder? In mainland Europe each border crossing (even between Schengen Countries) in marked by a road sign stating the name of the Country and all speed limits.

When you cross the border into Eire, do businesses in those border regions accept UK currency or is it strictly Euro ?
@dcog28826 жыл бұрын
Dee Raz why would they accept a foreign currency ??
@JohnMitch6 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you on that point, most places will offer an exchange rate close to the bank rate, at least all the business I deal with like Nisa Village shop, Petrol Stations, off licenses

All pubs, chippie, corner shops etc seem to take Sterling or Euros either side of border. Years ago I had no aggro using punts in a loyalist type pub in Fermanagh...barman was actually quite nice as well.

I've always thought that Ireland used different signs, such as the yellow stripes, the North American yellow diamond signs, and the American traffic signal sequence, mainly to remind British tourists that they were in a foreign country.

Will any of the border roads be blocked and/or checkpoints go up when the brexit kicks in?
@flitsertheo6 жыл бұрын
There are an estimated 275 crossings between Eire and NI. If Brexit results in a closed border they will have to reduce this number to keep it manageable. That means minor passages being blocked for all or prohibited for some trafic (goods, ...). It also means checkpoints as there used to be before the GFA and the opening of the EU borders in 1993. You can't keep the back door (Eire-NI) open while the front door (UK harbours and airports) is closed. Though as this video shows it's not going to be easy to disentangle both road systems.

Plenty of people here call it the Republic of Ireland. It's not the official name of the state, but it is widely used. It's even in law as the official *description* of the state. TRiG.
@deedeeforte6 жыл бұрын
No, it is not. Look at an Irish passport, or postage stamp. The term is used for football purposes.

wait, why you drive on the left in IRELAND?
@RobertK19937 жыл бұрын
Same as the UK.

No, it is not. The ignorance displayed here is dismaying. As many have pointed out above, the Constitution says the name of the State is Eire, or in the English language, Ireland. Republic of Ireland was a name invented 60/70 years ago by UEFA to differentiate between the football teams North and South - look it up. And if you have an Irish passport, look at the name on it - Eire. You won't see "Republic of Ireland" anywhere. Even simpler - look at a postage stamp. It says Eire. Do you think the Government of the country does not know it's correct name?

I see everybody still drives on the wrong side of the road.

Ok you drove around the boarder of two countries in a common travel area- it is not remarkable anymore most of western Europe is the same frankly I was hoping for more
@overlord45766 жыл бұрын
i might be wrong but i think the point he was going for is how interlinked the roads between N. Ireland and the republic are.
@LOGOS4228 жыл бұрын
There is no "Republic of Ireland". The official name of the sovereign state is Ireland.
@JohnMitch8 жыл бұрын
+LOGOS422 You are talking out of yr rear end mate: check this link: www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1948/act/22/enacted/en/html which clearly states as follows THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND ACT, 1948.AN ACT TO REPEAL THE EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY (EXTERNAL RELATIONS) ACT, 1936 , TO DECLARE THAT THE DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE SHALL BE THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, AND TO ENABLE THE PRESIDENT TO EXERCISE THE EXECUTIVE POWER OR ANY EXECUTIVE FUNCTION OF THE STATE IN OR IN CONNECTION WITH ITS EXTERNAL RELATIONS. [21st December, 1948.]BE IT ENACTED BY THE OIREACHTAS AS FOLLOWS:-Repeal of the Executive Authority (External Relations) Act, 1936.1.-The Executive Authority (External Relations) Act, 1936 (No. 58 of 1936), is hereby repealed.The Republic of Ireland.2.-It is hereby declared that the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland.
@LOGOS4228 жыл бұрын
The official name of the sovereign state is "Ireland". No-one in Europe or America calls it Republic of Ireland, except for the soccer team. It's only the UK government who refused to call the state "Ireland" - until after the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. They now, as is the international norm, call the 26 county state "Ireland" in all formal references.
@JohnMitch8 жыл бұрын
+LOGOS422 I could not care less what they call the country, I'll just go what the Irish statute says, and screw the rest. End of coversation!!!
@sunnywintermorning19418 жыл бұрын
+John .Mitch - Check the Constitution...Article 4; Eddie is right. That statute doesn't say anything about a name, only about a description. The name is in the Constitution.
@PS-bj3zq8 жыл бұрын
+eddie422 you are correct and im a unionist saying this but the name of the state in bunreacht na eireann is Ireland or Eire, meaning the 26 counties governed from Dublin, just like the official name of the UK is not just the "UK" but the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland "
