I would really appreciate if you watched this video on your desktop or television as it needs to be viewed HD on a large screen.
For the last 2 months I have been filming & photographing this amazing, beautiful & rare boreal owl. The only time I had ever seen one in the sun in the wild was for a couple of minutes in 2013. It was treacherous terrain in getting to this owl, a lot of snow, ice, crossing a frozen lake, knee deep snow & I ended up injuring myself to the point where I literally couldn't walk for 2 weeks and I am still recovering. I followed the doctors orders & didn't go out in nature or walk for over 2 weeks and when I went to visit this beautiful owl again THIS is what happened everything you see. The most AMAZING & scary thing happens (I don't want to give it away) and I get a panic attack watching the footage and remembering this when I seen her do this with my own eyes. It is shocking & it happens BEFORE she eats the prey she was sitting on the entire time. I would love to know your thoughts in the comments below.

Thank you, Heather! I live in SW Washington in mixed coniferous forest at about 1500'. I was out doing my first spring yard work at dusk and heard nine evenly spaced high E flats in a row with a pause and repetition . I listened to KZfaq videos and realized it was a boreal owl! Yay! She's beautiful! In all the years I've lived up here in the mountains I've heard many Barred owls and Great Horned owls, but now Boreal!!! Thank you for posting.

You’re the ONLY one who mentioned the pellet!!! I’m so happy you watched the entire video! I’ve never seen a pellet that huge & to me it looked like she was panicking as she was trying to bring it up and it being so big she needed to grip it with her foot/talons to hold it helping it out of her mouth! Crazy eh?

Dear Heather, that was really an experience! To see it so close, to follow the emotions on its face - and to feel with it while it regurgitated that ... thing! :D And I knoiw how it feels when you - feeling enthusiastic and excited about something - forget about caution... But please, dear Heather, do take care of yourself! We would be most happy to see you fresh and healthy and happy - and posting many more videos here! ;) :) :) Happy Women's Day, dear friend!! :) :) :)

Noooooo, You took that?!!! ^ ^ That is owlish! ^ ^ Anyway, this Boreal Owl was really an absolute, pure beauty to watch! The close-ups of the feathers around her eyes are awesome! They look like snow crystals!!! I found also lovely the proportions of this Boreal Owl as it seems that her angelic face is 50% of her body!!! Please be careful dear Heather, though! Wishing You a full and quick recover and Owly encounters and, when You cannot go out, Owly dreams!

This Heather ❤️, this is breathingtakingly beautiful and surreal. I love the way the owl turns its head around an impossible angle, preening, self snuggling and the braving on with such a cold weather. What is is intriguingly surprising is that the owl had a whole meal stored away only to regurgitate it and eat it all over again. I must admit, it's the only footage of this nature I have seen in my life ♥️. Good work and sorry for the ultimate sacrifice you made to capture such beauty Heather ❤️. You have a true love for the owls, and that is priceless.

Amazing footage Heather!! You were so well rewarded for braving the below freezing temps and I sincerely hope you are much better. Fantastic scenes of this Beautiful Boreal Owl!!! I've seen owls cough up pellets and they're small and it happens fast. This little owl's pellet was Huge and no need to slow down the film at all. Was amazing to watch in real time and see how she even held on to the pellet before letting it drop and then seeing her pull out the prey that was hidden beneath her feathers too!!! Simply amazing Heather, I can't think of another word for that surprise too. Watching her awake was beautiful enough but seeing these intimate behaviors is a gift! Thank you dear for sharing all of this wonderment with us and please take care! Warm regards, Cathy

Amazing catch! I'm new to the love of owls. Since I was a child I have been in love with elephants, still adore them, but recently came across an amazing owl picture... which cause me to follow some owl FB groups. The groups inspired me to look up owl KZfaq videos and I must admit I am charmed. Been researching how to capture owl photos... what I have learned is it requires great patience, the one thing I am NOT known for! :( I had an interest in falconry from a few years back (learned from my interests in English history) but I had only been watching hawk and eagle videos.... NOW I'm obsessed with watching owl falconry videos! LOL.... I now dream of becoming a licensed falconer so I can one day own owls, falcons and eagles. Happy to have found your channel.

💙🦉🙏thanks for your lovely words and yes it does require great patience! I wasn’t a patient person I’m still not but when it comes to owls I’m the most patient person in the world I will spend days just to watch the owl preen or yawn I just love them so much!

Silly me I thought it was a frozen pickle or a banana. I don't know anything about owls. I never saw an owl so beautiful, I love those spots and her chest is mainly white, it's just those spots are so huge and blend into the brown. I think in patterns. What I find more amazing than the owl is that photographer who goes out into below freezing and gets herself sick and picks up owl pellets. Your amazing Heather, you're my hero and super-star!!! ♥♥

Hi my dear friend Heather, after reading your description, I already knew, what to expect. I can well imagine, that you panicked, because you had to watch that unprepared !!! It is like cats, they also choke out the wool, that they swallow during the daily cleaning. It is incredible , how great and beautiful the face and eyes of this wonderful bird are. An I always have a smile on my face, when she turns her head by almost 360°....like R2D2 in the movie "Star wars" !!!! I hope you are feeling much better now dear Heather, I wish you a quick recover and please be careful my dear, warm greetings from the awakening "Garden of Angels" in Austria....have a relaxed weekend my lovely Queen of Owls.....I hug you....Saderé💜👍70

You’re right again I was unprepared to see her struggle with that enormous pellet! Yep her head did move like R2D2’s😊 much love and light to you my dear friend

Hi, Heather! Thanks for the documentary. Hope you had a speedy recovery following your return from that trek. Beautiful bird. 👍 #124 A Boreal Owl, Wow!!! These Owls are seldom seen by anyone at all during daylight hours due to their nocturnal habits and preference to stay out of sight. With that in mind, the first thought that hit me when I read of your trek through such a hazardous area was, *I'm so thrilled you found him* And with nobody else out there, there are no footprints or clues at all as to where he is perched. So I am truly thankful that on this occasion at least that you managed not only to find him out in the sun, but he was perched where you were able to comfortably watch and film him too. ◕‿◕ I think the actual size of the Owl has a huge bearing on sightings too. This little guy is a similar size and appearance of the UK resident 'Little Owl' (Athene noctua). Most other Owls in the same area as these smaller Owls, as well as other raptors, would predate it, as it is competition for nesting territory and their food source. I have to say Heather that as much as I love the head turns, preening, scratching, slow blinking, fluffing up and beautiful markings I am totally blown away that such a small Owl can possibly cough up such an ENORMOUS pellet!!! I have seen thousands of Owl pellets and every single one by a larger Owl than this Boreal, yet none as large as this one and if I hadn't just watched it, I would never believe it even if presented to me. There must be a very healthy vole and rodent count this season and this 'little angel' can sure hunt! The entire contents of the pellet are just the indigestible fur, bones and teeth. I think you did the right thing in collecting part of this pellet too, though many may find it odd. I too have taken pellets home before and dissected them to find full skulls of small birds and the upper and lower jaws of numerous voles in a single Owl pellet. The contents of that pellet were probably only consumed a matter of hours earlier too and the pellet *must* be regurgitated to make physical room for the next feed, which was ready to be defrosted further and consumed in stages as it was. And I loved the frozen 'hook-like' tail finally going down too! I had a little laugh at the end when you repeated the word *Half* An absolute *pinch yourself* moment Heather, well done!!! ◕‿◕
