Owls have barbs on their first primary feathers which break up the wind to muffle the sound. Not just being graceful but their feather design is mainly why they have silent flight. Slightly mentioned in the video, low wing loading (small, light body with big wings) also helps generate lift in flight.

One night I was driving a truck from Scotland down to Teeside England. Close to the border,you come to a roundabout where you can go straight on into Berwick or turn right, up the hill, headed towards Newcastle. As I started up the hill a Barn Owl came out of the trees and flew directly in front of the windshield for what seemed like 10-15 seconds. He was only a few feet in front of the truck and I had the most wonderful view of him. It's a moment and memory I'll never forget.

TazHall: Lol religious folks always quick to point out that they’re poor scientific minds. Nvm we can’t all be scientists. Well, ~3.7 billion years of evolution will get some results, and whatever’s next after homo sapiens may be better at grasping such time spans. Currently 3.7 billion years are simply beyond what our species can deal with. Abhid: Though nature has a good head start, technology did come up with such a concept as the wheel which is probably the best example of tech without a blueprint in nature.

For almost 65 years I've adored parrots, cockatoos, keets and all types of exotic, colorful, wonderfully-adorned beauties. Baretta birds? Hell yeah!!! (Anyone younger than 40 probably won't know what I'm talking about lol) However, the birds that have always had my full attention are the regal, majestic, predatory hunters in the skies. Hawks, falcons, eagles, kites and...most importantly...owls of ALL types. Not sure what the attraction is but owls just seem so damn loveable and Panda Bear/Teddy Bear-ish, yanno? I love their faces, their eyes, the way they turn and, ultimately, their silence in flight while hunting.

Owls are so amazing. There is an owl that visits a small park near where I live in summer time. I can't wait for it's return. I found a kind of hawk moth last summer and I'm really interested in insects, too. So I picked up the moth to take a closer look and then it flew off from my hand! Unbelievably, a second later the owl flew silently past me and caught the poor hawk moth. That was mesmerizing to see, I did feel a bit bad for the moth but at the same time to see a moth fly right past me and caught the moth was fantastic! I also saw it catch a sparrow the week before that. Such awesome birds!

Fun fact: It is thought that barn owls are predominantly responsible for cryptid or alien encounters because of their loud sound, appearance, and protective instinct. The mothman with its big face and red eyes? The Flatwoods Monster? Yeah, barn owls. Even gray aliens have been attributed to them, the oval face appearing gray in the dark with a harder to see body and blackened eyes. Look at their illustrations and stories with this in mind and you'll realize it pretty quick. You'll also realize it when you find out that the sightings of the original moth man dried up when a hunter went out looking for the cryptid and nabbed himself a particularly massive barn owl, apparently much larger than average which would explain why it was chasing cars and causing quite a stir leading to the legends, which is not so fun to hear but there you go. The way they fly at you to protect their nest, which obviously sets you off running also races the imagination.

Amazing video! I just learned more about owls in 14 min. than I ever knew. As a hunter/fisherman/outdoorsman I've been listening to owls my whole life since I was a young boy and I never knew that they could fly silently in Stealth Mode. Years ago while turkey hunting I was slowly making my way up a steep hill early in the morning with barely enough daylight to see the ground when I saw movement coming straight at me, I put my hand up out of reflex and a small owl hit me directly in my right hand and left scratches down my cheek. When I told my Dad what happened he said that it probably saw the top of my cap moving as I walked and thought it was a squirrel or a mouse and judging by the small size of the owl it was probably a screech owl. Scary incident absolutely, if it wasn't for my fast reflexes I could have lost my right eye, yet only received a few scratches and the owl was unscathed as it flew away.

I love the air of mystery surrounding owls. Although many falconry experts claim they are not intelligent, there are many sources that debate this in terms of long term study of these birds.

i don'nt think that experts meant "not intelligent",they are smart,but less than crows or ravens,those psychos are INCREDIBLE in problem solving,and figuring solutions etc.

The last clip doesn't surprise me at all. Snowy owls and other members of their genus are notoriously territorial. I'd be more surprised if the owls didn't go after the camera person!

It probably flies so silently because it needs to hear its prey. Also it's more feathers than meat, so yeah, an owl is pretty light.

They fly silently because feathers are softer-it’s not something they control.
@DeFraans
@DeFraans 3 жыл бұрын
@@maryrosekent8223 you think it's because they're softer? In the video they just said the pigeon had to move a lot of air because it has small wings for its weight (size), so it had to displace more. And so they make a lot of noise.
