i'm an english lit major and old books seem boring bc life was boring in old times. old books get funnier when you read them as studies of how bored people used to be. ever read wuthering heights? that's a book about a dude who gets really invested in the fucked up lives of his neighbors and makes his maid tell him their life stories in great detail while he's sick because reality tv hadn't been invented yet. the whole story is basically the bachelor high on the 1840s. that's how you avoid being bored by old books.

I totally disagree. I recently read moby dick and its just an jnhinged dude, incorrect facts about animals and homoeroticism and thats just how these books are today too. And while i got blindgly bored by pride and prejudice i get equally bored from modern day romance novels, while a child counting the stars is one of the most interesting books i have ever read and its like 70 years old

Withering heights is awful you shouldn’t give all your characters such similar names because readers can’t keep them straight

@@Animallovercomediansomeone must rewrite Wuthering heights, but everyone has very different names. Two heathcliffs? Nah. The bitchin one was named garfield now and the lame ass is named heathcliff. (I think it was two Heathcliff. Maybe it was George or whatever.)

Pro tip if anyone has to read crime and punishment: do it like I did. Find an audiobook on KZfaq, listen on 1.5 speed for 10 hours while playing minecraft

Secondary pro tip: don’t read crime and punishment if you don’t have to it sucks I did technically read it to completion but I more or less skimmed the last 20 pages

man having just finished reading The Brothers Karamazov for a class where it was over 50% of the class' second time (at least) reading it, and like 75% of the class' favorite novel of all time by the end, already planning on rereading it again this summer made this bit pretty funny. Especially since The Brothers Karamazov could easily be a grittier au of the McElroy Brothers lmao

I'm surprised Justin didn't mention Brothers Karamazov when complaining about characters having too many names because holy shit is that a thing. There are lots of dank nugs on the same level as the quote Justin mentioned, and it's a fantastic book, but good God I am never going to read it again.
