‘If Boris pulls off this miracle of getting a new deal out of Brussels and through parliament by the 31st of October, I’ll resign.’
In this exclusive interview Conservative party leadership candidate Rory Stewart speaks out on Boris Johnson’s ‘abuses of power’, the influence of Dominic Cummings, and whether the Prime Minister will get a new Brexit deal or be forced to resign.
Rory Stewart opens up about the psychological impact of having the whip removed, the disintegration of the traditional political environment, and the profound constitutional faults that are being uncovered through the Brexit deadlock and prorogation of parliament.
Rory Stewart: Conservative party leadership candidate Rory Stewart was one of 21 anti no-deal rebels to be purged from the party on 3rd September 2019. The former Secretary of State for International Development under Theresa May is now an independent politician and champion of the fight against a No Deal Brexit.
Emma Barnett: Rory Stewart is interviewed by the journalist Emma Barnett, who regularly presents BBC's Newsnight, Radio 5 Live, and Woman's Hour.

I’ve been a labour supporter my entire political life, 50 years and counting, Born and bred red one might say. I wish more people would appreciate the value of having sincere ,empathetic , honest ,sensible ,mature ,respectful people with integrity, represent them in the parliament of this land . Surely ,that is the least we should expect . It's what many far more " lowly" jobs would be looking for as a baseline. Rory , would get my vote but instead we have voted in a number of self serving con artists to whom empathy is a mysterious concept and honesty and respect are words which should have "dis" in front of them . We need to insist that the behaviour of each constituency MP meets these minimum standards if they wish to be elected and that they will be de-selected if they let these standards fall .

I've a decent share of a Nobel Peace Prize, and may be Cummings' original "weirdo and misfit" - but there's no way I'll deal with politics now. Both sides have turned it into radical autocracy, nobody's interested in the centre ground. What's about to head our way is a massive wave of falsehoods, as the election campaign starts, buying votes. I've set up two small parties in my time, Paul Judge's Jury Team, and the local administration in the Brussels borough of Watermael.

This man is of impeccable background to qualify him as a professional politician in the presently-accepted mode - ancient family connections, Eton, Oxford [ Balliol no less ! ] and a degree in PPE. His sincerity is clear. In my view the essential qualities required to be a successful politician - the ability to lie convincingly, to cheat when you have to, and to bully those who oppose you, are all lacking. I can see why he is having some difficulty in deciding what to do next.

Some UK citizens, (including 'Alfred Munkenbeck', who has also posted a reply herein to 'anicetune') clearly believe that Parliamentary democracy is the be-all and end-all of UK democracy. IT IS NOT! DIRECT DEMOCRACY, which is the purest form of the Will of the People (as, for example, was expressed in the 2016 referendum), SUPERSEDES Parliamentary democracy. It is extremely rarely applied, usually in matters of the highest importance. It should have been applied in 1973, before Ted Heath criminally and ILLEGALLY bulldozed the UK into the EU (EEC/Common Market back then). Boris is, quite correctly, doing his utmost, in the face of disgracefully undemocratic resistance, to obey the DIRECT DEMOCRATIC Will of the People.

Ermmm have you ever done much reading on the history of direct democracy? You seemed to have ignored the centuries of debate on this topic, which is mainly agreeing that direct democracy requires too much participation from the average citizen, and will end up as either uniformed people making decisions, or being highjacked by populist leaders, or most likely, both. Representative democracy was the solution to this problem, as although the people get the ultimate say every election (thus ensuring that those seeking re-election must reflect the public will) the people do not get the say on each decision. Direct democracy maybe 'pure' but it's by no means agreed to be the best way of making decisions.

@Brexit Monger Yes it is about opposing each other and then find a compromise. We have this situation in germany often with our multi party system. It is simply not possible to ignore half of the voters (the direction doesn't matter). And he would stand for this approche. Without a compromise the country will be divded for a very long time, I would guess more then 10 years and less thn 50. What currently happens is dangerous. The UK has a PM that speaks on the speach to his party about bringing the country together. The day after, over statet, he shits 48% of the voters in the frontyard by suspending parlament. Is is legal, yes and it seems to be common. Is is nessesary and/or senisble , hell no. There was no need to deepen the divide.

@martin corderoy I aggree to your explaination mostly. This is how it works in germany. The AfD is a bit of a special subject since they are so hard right wing that they are quiet near to be not allowed in germany (since they not distance themself from the extreme right and even go fishing for votes over there). (for good reasons the far right is not allowed) But how they are handled by the other partys is not good as well. But I think that is a complett own and lengthy discussion. To the orginal point is a bit different. As far as I could see from the outside, it is not so much about partys in the UK since the major partys also split internaly about the brexit question. I think for all politics it is really importent to act sencitiv in this question. They should avoid deepening the division in the country. And it would be fine to wait for the queens speach until November. There is no need to do this and risk deeper devided country. It is simply not a good idea.

@@maddwarf7976 AfD hard right wing...check your compass m8, think for yourself for a change. What makes a party right wing, given only a few decades ago the position the AfD currently holds was dead center and well established? Does the definition suddenly change because: 1) special interest owned media says so over and over while robbing you blind? 2) those wanting a communist style EUSSR make sure you get fined or incarcerated if you do not support their notions? 3) they are right of Stalin/Mao/Hitler (yes he was far left by any definition, hence similar outcomes to others on this list). The point is that calling AfD right wing is displaying a horrific lack of knowledge, both historical as well as what is going on these days. Burn all your existing news sources, learn and become human again, for as currently you are just a wooden puppet with a vote...which makes you dangerous in the wrong hands.

Is it really a democratic country, the Union, the United Kingdom? Both Scotland and Northern Ireland have prospered by belonging to the EU and they overwhelmingly voted to Remain, as well as the wealthy and well-educated English cities. As Scotland and NIreland find their prosperity has benefitted by belonging to the EU, perhaps it is time now to dismantle the Union, the United Kingdom. (I wonder if there are any available Stuart heirs willing to take up the Scottish crown?) In the end, the numbers between Leave and Remain were close, the reasons dishonest, and, as has been proven, the Leave campaign was heavily influenced by mischief aimed at breaking up the EU. @martin corderoy We'll have to politely agree to disagree on that one. I personally feel that very few people would vote for the Brexit Party now; the initial buzz has died down and from multiple recent polls it appears that the majority of people appear to be more centrist having become aware of how much the Leave campaign misled people. Regardless, certainly most people do not appear to want to leave the EU without a deal (nothing to do with leaving or remaining, simpy that the majority do not like the idea of leaving without a deal). Personally, I don't see Rory Stewart or any of the rebel MPs as "left wing"... I see the present leadership being as far right as Corbyn is far left and should there be an election in your country in the reasonably near future I predict the Liberal Democrats will do very well but there will almost certainly be a hung parliament ultimately. Clearly you don't like people who lie about and to people and so you will also understand the distate a vast number of people have for Boris, who has lied from the start of the Leave Campaign and continues to do so. I have to respectfully disagree with you about Boris having "a pair of balls"... a man who runs away in Luxembourg from 50 OAPs holding pro-Remain signs doesn't strike me as someone with "balls"! I feel the next election will, in a great sense be a "leave"/"remain" situation again and this is why I think the Lib Dems will do well. You may find this an odd comment coming from me,but I actually like Anne Marie Waters very much and many of her ideas are very sensible. I don't agree with everything she says, but she isn't part of the "Westminster Bubble" and to me that is refreshing.

This is one of the moments in which I wish for a more fare political system than the partisan, i.e. "proportional representation". Conservatism is an appealing idea for safeguarding stability should the wealth being conserved is used for promoting the country's growth. I have never vote for a conservatory party though both when I was in Greece, where I was born, and while living in UK as a British Citizen via Naturalisation since 1983. I've seen in both countries the abuse of the idea to conserve in a way that what wealth is getting stored in the government's coffers in order to benefit the public, in fact gets abused and channeled to the ones in power and those who are already wealthy. This is my reason for disliking the idealistic partisan politics Rory Stuart is a very charismatic open minded deeply knowledgeable and truly democratic politician. I would without hesitation put my vote for Rory should we had a proportional representation political system. In my opinion every country needs people like Rory Stuart democratically appointed to run their civil service in a way that safeguards and benefits its citizens.

Him framing the whole thing as he can vote however he likes and against party lines is irrelevant on this issue! And statistically its telling that so many parlement voting did not line up with the will of their respective constituents. This is actually a coup by the remainders with foreign aid from the EU to keep the elitist raping party going. Don't forget that GB did not became part of the EU democratically, it was forced upon the people and they do not seem to like it very much. In short he is a thug, pretending to be a saint. He misrepresents constantly, talking about procedures one-sided and out of context, and due to the manner in which he speaks and using the socialist elites favorite words, such idiots will be taken in by them without any critical thinking whatsoever. As to them that is what makes it feel like a warm bath and lines up what they constantly hear in their own social circles and the legacy media (which is full of one sided globalist propaganda). Its social engineering, used by every decent con-artist on the planet and in this case its organized by a group of people.

Real Conservatives and real Socialists do not share that opinion. Real Socialists see the four 'freedoms' as freedom for the banks to undermine working conditions and destroy free collective bargaining (correct), and real Conservatives have never been able to accept the legislative powers of European Commission, not because they're powerful unelected and unaccountable technocrats, but because it's supranational body and it's laws (regulations really) cannot be challenged or repealed either by the British Parliament or the powerless European Parliament.

Most conservatives say lots of nice things and do lots of bad things. Rory says lots of nice things and does lots of bad things. Here are some of the abhorrent highlights of Rory's voting record in the commons taken directly from their record which all are more than capable of looking up, with some explanations of impacts added. I refuse to compromise with anyone who holds the beliefs he does that are apparent in his voting record and no decent principled human being ever would nor should. If some want to have their vote bought by his silver tongue then god help us all as nothing will ever change. Generally voted against measures to prevent climate change Almost always voted for use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas Voted against investigations into the Iraq war Generally voted for reducing housing benefit for social tenants deemed to have “excess bedrooms” Consistently voted against raising welfare benefits at least in line with prices. Almost always voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability Almost always voted for making local councils responsible for helping those in financial need afford their council tax and reducing the amount spent on such support (while also voting for measures that cut funding to councils) Almost always voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits (despite the fact that most of those in receipt of such benefits are in work but just unable to earn enough due to decades of stagnant wages) Generally voted against spending public money to create guaranteed jobs for young people who have spent a long time unemployed Consistently voted for raising the threshold at which people start to pay income tax while at the same time almost always voting for increasing the rate of VAT Almost always voted for higher taxes on alcoholic drinks Almost always voted for higher taxes on plane tickets Almost always voted against increasing the tax rate applied to income over £150,000 Generally voted against a banker’s bonus tax Voted a mixture of for and against higher taxes on banks Consistently voted against an annual tax on the value of high value residential property. Almost always voted for allowing employees to give up some employment rights for shares in the company they work for Almost always voted for more restrictive regulation of trade union activity limiting the ability of workers to get better pay and conditions despite the bottom half of the country having barely more than stagnant wages for decades. Almost always voted for reducing capital gains tax which is a tax on dividend payment for shares owned in a company, defined as “unearned income” by the economics profession, lowering this tax makes the rich richer given they own most of the shares. Unearned income, i.e. money for no work, is already taxed at a lower rate than money earned through working. Almost always voted for reducing the rate of corporation tax which increases the profits retained for corporations who are already making record profits as they have done most years for the last 5 decades, which in turn results in higher dividend payments. Consistently voted against restricting the provision of services to private patients by the NHS forcing the NHS to foot the bill for recuperation of private patients. Consistently voted for reforming the NHS so GPs buy services on behalf of their patients (which has been a disaster and taken the NHS from a £1 billion surplus in 2010 to a £4.3 billion deficit in 2018.) Almost always voted against smoking bans Voted for raising England’s undergraduate tuition fee cap to £9,000 per year Consistently voted for academy schools enabling the further privatisation of the comprehensive education system. Consistently voted for ending financial support for some 16-19 year olds in training and further education Consistently voted for university tuition fees Almost always voted for reducing central government funding of local government Consistently voted for fewer MPs in the House of Commons despite having a growing population. Generally voted against a more proportional system for electing MPs as god forbid the people actually choose their local MP. Consistently voted against a wholly elected House of Lords as god forbid we actually have democracy in the upper chamber. Almost always voted for local councils keeping money raised from taxes on business premises in their areas, the result of this policy has been that as central government have cut funding to councils, local governments have been forced to edge up business rates squeezing small and medium sized businesses for the shortfalls while the large corporations operate under minimal taxation in comparison and are often given business rate relief by local councils in order to attract them. Recently Amazon began opening stores in the UK, it was calculates that an independent book store is paying 91 pence in tax for ever 9 pence amazon pays. Buy hey, more profits = higher dividend payments = more money to the rich. Consistently voted for greater restrictions on campaigning by third parties, such as charities, during elections as their poverty, inequality, and homeless statistics embarrass the conservatives. Consistently voted against removing hereditary peers from the House of Lords Almost always voted against transferring more powers to the Welsh Assembly Generally voted against transferring more powers to the Scottish Parliament Generally voted against more powers for local councils Consistently voted for a veto for MPs from England, Wales and Northern Ireland over laws specifically impacting their part of the UK, i.e. English MP’s can overrule laws made in other parts of the union. And we all wonder why half of Scotland wants to leave… Generally voted against a lower voting age, presumably because the majority of voters under 40 go to Labour. Consistently voted for a stricter asylum system despite the fact that the UK generally only takes 20 to 40 thousand a year which is one of the lowest amounts taken by any advanced nation. Consistently voted for requiring the mass retention of information about communications (yes that’s right, he voted for every man woman and child’s net and general communications in the UK to be spied on 24/7 365) Consistently voted for stronger enforcement of immigration rules while ignoring the fact that economic migrants are incentivised to come here by British capitalists many of whom own temp agency's in many nations that advertise British jobs and also he has said nothing about the windrush scandal. Consistently voted for selling England’s state owned forests Almost always voted for higher taxes on plane tickets Generally voted against financial incentives for low carbon emission electricity generation methods Generally voted for culling badgers to tackle bovine tuberculosis Generally voted against greater regulation of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract shale gas Almost always voted against greater public control of bus services Almost always voted against slowing the rise in rail fares Generally voted against a publicly owned railway system Consistently voted for phasing out secure tenancies for life Consistently voted against greater regulation of gambling Consistently voted for capping civil service redundancy payments (while at the same time the government was cutting civil servants thus reducing the cost to government for getting rid of working people who needed that income and were due redundancy for time served) Generally voted for the privatisation of Royal Mail Generally voted against requiring pub companies to offer pub landlords rent-only leases which would have aided in bringing our pubs back to life. Generally voted for restricting the scope of legal aid which has removed the ability for the majority of the working classes to seek legal aid in order to have access to the judicial system. Consistently voted for allowing national security sensitive evidence to be put before courts in secret sessions only. Consistently voted against restrictions on fees charged to tenants by letting agents

Epicenter of the two World Wars has been Europe. Subsequently ‘Cool Heads’ and ‘Reasonableness’ prevailed and European Economic Community (EEC) came into being in 1957 and eventually it integrates/joins with European Union (EU) in 1993. Britain/ UK joins the EEC in 1973.To cut the story short, it wasn't until 1992 that the European Union was officially formed, with Britain's membership coming into force in November 1993. In our opinion Brexit Or No-Brexit:- A. UK has had a pretty good time (almost a monopoly) particularly in Trade/Commerce since the days of its colonization. It had to its credit its markets nearly the world over. Britain/UK was doing well. Post 2nd World War Britain’s monopoly in Trade/Manufacturing/Commerce gradually curtailed/dwindled due to DE-Colonization, enhanced international competition, so gradually its effects on UK’s economy were clearly visible as its Trade/manufacturing also took a severe hit. B. At this juncture we are living in a completely changed World as compared to 1960’s and before. British and the rest of the world is aware of the drastic change in Britain’s standing in the World as compared to refer (A) above. C. Not only UK but the entire Europe also suffered severely, fighting/feuding of the kind the World witnessed in the shape of two Great Wars at a mammoth cost of lives/resources etc. And this is one of the reason for the formation of EEC/EU. All of us in EUROPE ought to comprehend and appreciate it. CONCLUSION: United Europe it STANDS but Divided! It is at a Big Loss. BUT The Europe en-bloc, ought to thrash out all sorts of their differences of whatever kind/nature it is, at/from the platform of Europe or EU (European Union) and listen to one another coolly/calmly and be accommodating. Be Together and stay as ‘Close as Possible’ & be better-off overall, rather than Brexit and be relatively in a worse-off position/situation.
