The Clarence persona was a coping mechanism for Paulie from a young age. Since he always had a tumultuous home and family life, he liked to be Clarence, since Clarence lived at home with both parents, and Clarence' parents have a real good marriage.

The line from the madam, where she says "He (Lt. Markazian) thought he (Paulie) was a psycho", was one of few times an actor got a line changed. According to Michael imperioli, the actual line was "He thought he was a bully." And Tony Sirico objected to Paulie being called a bully. So they changed bully to psycho, and Sirico was OK with that.
