Notice how Isildur was shot with three arrows in the back after giving in completely to the power of the ring, while Boromir got shot with three in the front after he faced his demons in the end. Such a masterpiece on so many levels.

+J.Bulik films Boromir, son of Denethor. Guard-Captain of Gondor, leader of all its armies and stalwart defender of Osgiliath. He was tempted, and while he did not resist, he fought back from it and died with valour. In the books, it was not one archer, but a squad of Uruk Archers that riddled him, and he fought on until he could no longer stand, killing Uruk-hai after Uruk-hai.

2:01 The last look of goodbye to Merry and Pippin. Boromir knew it was over for him, and all he cared about was the safety of his friends. I feel that Boromirs greatest attribute, when it comes to fighting, is that he never fought for himself, but for the safety and love of others. Just like any athlete or artist, the best ones are those with a true love for what they do. With that being said, that is what (in my opinion) made Boromir the great warrior that he was. Be at peace, son of Gondor.

1:54 Sean's facial acting in this is so incredibly good. That look is what I see as the look of a man who knows he's dead. Then he rolls over to face Merry and Pip and I always think that he's thinking "I'm sorry. I'm sorry." over and over for not being able to protect them. Then the wild strikes and crazed yells, again, of a man who knows that he won't survive and is determined only to cause as much damage as possible before he can't stay alive anymore.

I never cared for Boromir as a kid but rewatching this older now, hes become one my favorite characters, because of how human he was. Him trying to take the ring from Frodo was only driven by his desperation to save his people. He came back to his senses when he realized he was in fact becoming the traitor that he claimed Frodo would eventually become. Those last two minutes of him protecting Merry and Pippin perfectly sum up his character: Passionate, noble and selfless.

In the Games Workshop wargame, the Horn has a great power- psychological warfare! Essentially, Boromir can use the horn in combat when he's outnumbered, and enemies have to succeed on a Courage test or back away in fear. It's incredibly strong against orcs, who don't tend to have high Courage. The best part- if the psychological warfare fails, Boromir is mighty enough to just win the fight anyway, most of the time.

0:08 is such an underrated but amazing part of the scene. The focus of the camera shifts to the orcs instead of the heroes, while the music changes to the Uruk Hai theme with more frantic pacing of the choreography. the result is that the viewers shift their perspective on the fight and the stakes in it. The long tracking shot shows us in full real time how devastatingly far away Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are from Boromir and the hobbits. Even a viewer with no idea what´s about to happen will feel the impending sense of doom, the tension placed on whether or not the hobbits can escape. All this is achieved in 10 brilliant seconds. Think about that.

TRIVIA TIME: Fellowship of the Rings was theatrically released as PG, but due to Lurtz licking the blood of the blade, it made it PG-13 in the extended edition. Go figs. You can maim his arm and decapitate, PG. Blood-licking = PG-13. Oh, MPAA, you so silly. Second, and a very interesting one: the part where Aragorn's dagger is thrown back at him [4:03] was supposed to be dodged, but since it was coming at him, Viggo Mortenson's reaction was to baseball swing it away. Which luckily he did hit it away and ended up making the scene cooler. I'm sure it's still a prop knife (dull), but it's still metal. So that was a real throw (mis-throw) towards the actor. An accident that dangerously worked in the movies favor, imo. And probably everyone's, now that they've read this.

Well, by licking the blade, that pesky Uruk just went ahead and sexed that thing right up to the point where we couldn't have people of a certain sensibility watch it on screen. There would have been Orcgies going on inside cinemas all across the globe. And I know it isn't this scene, but I'll trivialise right back at you. In the Two Towers when Aragorn kicks the helmet in front of the burning pile of bodies outside Fangorn Forest, he actually broke his fucking toe. His reaction is genuine pain, which Peter Jackson, being the loveable scamp he is, included in the film for us all to watch. Peter Jackson is one twisted Kiwi I'll give him that

Man... this was the saddest death in lord of the rings. Boromir wasn't evil, just was overpowered by the ring. He is a protector, that's all he wanted to do. You could tell by the way he was always looking after Merry and Pippin. In His final stand each stroke of his sword shows his desire to save the ones he loves, willing to fight through pain and certain death not to redeem himself but as an act of selflessness to defend those who otherwise couldn't defend themselves. After all he does carry a shield, the sign of a defender. Favorite character... R.I.P.

I just love this scene so much! There's something about watching Boromir, just after he tried to take the ring from Frodo, when the audience is feeling betrayed, and then to watch him defend the hobbits against a horde of Uruk-hai. I love that with the music, it almost seemed like Boromir and the hobbits could actually win, even after he got shot with that first arrow. But, when he got hit by that second arrow, you could almost see the realization smack the hobbits in the face: "Boromirs not going to survive this". What makes that so powerful is the fact that they haven't watched anyone die before; sure, they think Gandalf died, but he fell... this is different; this time, they are now WATCHING someone's final moments, with the knowledge he is going to die... Honestly, this was masterfully written, performed, and directed
@grizzly_manbanimation8436

I’d also like to add that even after that second arrow, it looked like he was about done, until he looked upon the hobbits one more time and mustered up enough strength to fight at least 2 more uruks and kill them before getting hit with the 3rd arrow sealing his fate. He died a warrior’s death, with honor. He earned the respect people give him for his final moments. Even when he was down he wouldn’t give up. The lives of others was just too important to give up easily.

I love how Boromir's hair grows messier and sweatier the longer he's fighting for. It's a small detail but it really shows how weary he's getting, and makes it very apparent how amazing it is that he's continuing to fight.

One of my favourite bits about this scene is that wide shot that shows just how many Uruk Orcs Boromir has killed. It feels like his last stand alone accounted for half the casualties Saruman's forces suffered that day.

What I love about Boromir is not that he was flawed, but that in the face of his greatest failing he would not stay down.

Unlike his Game of Thrones counterpart, who happened to loose his head, simply because he couldn't retain control over the throne for the rightful heir which wasn't the brat who took the throne.

What's powerful about this scene is every arrow hurts more than the last...you just want him to stop fighting and the arrows to stop penetrating him.

I literally start to cry when I see Merri's and Pippin's faces at 1:56. They are so shocked and helpless and suddenly unable to fight when seeing their champion lose. Props to Peter Jackson for not making Merri and Pippin for example kill 15 Uruk-Hai themselves at that point (many Hollywood director would probably have).

2:30 I never noticed before, but in this shot, we see Boromir's horn was broken in half where in the previous shot it was still in one piece. The last arrow must have struck it and broken it in two, which is why it's in 2 halves when returned to Faramir

Well, horns don't really split like that. It was a plastic prop that broke on screen (glue in the middle split) so they kept it in the last film because many noticed it on screen.

Man growing up in the early 2000s I saw some of the greatest movies ever created, and now as an adult when I rewatch them my opinion hasn’t changed a bit and my depth of understanding when watching powerful scenes like this is honestly an amazing feeling!

Exactly, and yet some idiot insists made up CGI orcs that shouldn't be in those films are better. The originals rock. I won't watch the second or third hobbit films.

Because it's safer. You do realize that Viggo was almost seriously injured during that knife throw part? The knife was supposed to be thrown into a tree but the actor could not see very well in his costume. The Orcs in the Hobbit still look good.

I keep coming back to this, it's so intense and unnerving. I know it's just latex prosthetic makeup art and special effects, but still......... ugh! It's just awful. When Merry and Pippin attack, I feel so bad for them. The looks of despair, anguish, and anger, seeing them attack, I get a little teary eyed, it's very dramatic.
