Pedro Martinez said on an interview that Roger deserves to be on Cooperstown because before the steroid era he already had HOF numbers. But is not up to them to decide, sadly. I love Roger´s stuff, filthy and powerful, for me one of the greatest pichers to step on a mound.

That's because Santana didn't accomplished as much as Clemens had. Compare Clemen's Boston W-L record, strikeouts, innings pitched, etc. to Santana's career record. It's no comparison.

The point is that Clemens had better numbers in Boston alone than what Santana had in his entire career, the comparison you made isn't a good one. Also Clemen's career was far from over when he left Boston, he would still be pitching for few more years at least without the stuff. Also note that it was said that it was 1998 when he started juicing, giving off the implication regarding his 1997 season. We'll never really know for sure however.

He was not only a HOFer before 1999, he probably pitched the best 3000 or so innings in baseball history. So yes he should be a HOFer. It's a travesty he's not in.

He was fastball, overhand curve and occasional slider in the 80s......by this point in his career he was fastball, split and slider. The split proved to be a better secondary pitch since it was much harder to pick up out of his hand.....it looked like a fastball.

Clemens claims this was the peak of his career. The last yr in Boston and the 2 Toronto years. Not too old that he lost pop off of his fastball or the ability to log alot of innings and avoid injury, and more importantly by this time he perfected his splitter and officially switched from the fastball, curveball occasional slider guy of his early career to the more well rounded & deceptive repertoire of fastball, SPLIT, occasional slider pitcher of his later career. The split proved to be a more deceptive, harder to pick up, change up like out pitch compared to his curveball.(Compare his 1986 20K game to this one and you'll see it) Batters couldn't tell if a fastball or split was coming out his hand...the split also helped him keep the ball in the park better, Dude gave up 9 HRs in 264 innings in 1997 !! Bill James claims his 96 Win Loss record was one of the unluckiest in history and that Clemens was arguably the Cy Young again given his other stats. Bottom line: idiots that claim he was in decline in his last Boston yrs are completely wrong. Dude was just hurt in 93 and 95 and had mediocre seasons, plus stupid old people were just looking at wins and losses instead of the stats that matter like innings, ERA+, WAR and its constituents of HR/9, BB/9 & K/9. Clemens should have been in the Hall 9 yrs ago. It's an utter travesty him and Bonds aren't there.

The narrative that Clemens started using in 97 is just pure nonsense based on nothing....This clip proves he wasnt in decline in 96..which is the most absurd notion ever....2nd best pitcher in the AL in 96 and 94. Arguably the best pitcher those years....the win loss record threw the stat dinosaurs off, and the fact Clemens the only time in his career struggled with injury in 93 and 95. That isnt the least bit strange. 33 isn't old for a power pitcher, 34 isn't old. Look at Schilling ( basically the most similar pitcher to Clemens). McNamee said it was 98, writers try to lump in 97 because if they dont include possibly the best year of pitching since the dead ball era then their decline narrative falls apart. I believe Clemens used in the years McNamee said he did...he did a cycle on the second half of 98 2000 and 2001. Even if you want to completely throw those years out....which is crazy...hes still one of the best ever. Not to mention he had 2 incredible years in 04 and 05....after testing was in place, after Balco and Congress and after the media and fans did their 180 and suddenly cared about steroids....so I highly doubt someone who cares about his rep so badly would risk getting caught those years. McNamee was still his trainer and never mentioned he used those years and I doubt he cares about protecting him now. So people should realize, he wasnt in decline in Boston....stats prove that. 97 should be considered clean because it wasnt mentioned by McNamee, 34 isnt old, and other contemporary power pitchers had great years between at that age.....So Clemens was a HOF caliber player both before and after he used steroids. He should honestly have 9 Cy Youngs....1990 and 2005 were rip offs. So even if you wanna take away 98 and 2001...he should still have 7. It's just a travesty hes not in the hall. I wonder if Clemens could have handled the Mitchell report in another way that would have enabled him to retain enough good will to make the hall. " tried it a couple times, didnt like the side effects etc"

Absolutely agree with you. He was Tom Seaver with a little more longevity. He was Nolan Ryan with better control, albeit a little less gas. Probably the most complete pitcher we have seen as far as having all facets - power, control, low ERA. Justin Verlander comes close in today's generation but not close enough to top Clemens. I am big fan of Ryan for his gas and longevity and of Maddux for his control and low ERA's. Clemens is a perfect combination of the two. Mark Prior and Stephen Strasburg were two guys who were heading in that direction before injuries derailed them.

During his fictitious decline at the old age of 32 that his detractors talk so much about, the decline that encouraged him to go to Toronto and juice up...apparently declining by striking out 20 in his second to last start .......led the league in Ks, 240 innings a top 5 ERA, and 7.9 WAR.....and thats a decline somehow by the way. There was no decline....34 is not old for a pitcher, and his contemporaries like Johnson ane Schilling both peaked in their mid 30s....so the fact Clemens had great years at 34 and 35 shouldnt be suspect if Johnson and Schilling, and Ryan, and Smoltz....and now Verlander did the same....34,35 is not old for a great pitcher....Clemens was never in decline....he just happened to have his only injury plagued seasons during that time.

@curragh 42 Johnson won 4 Cy Youngs from age 35 to 38. Curt Schilling's best years were age 34, 35, and 37. So yes they peaked in their mid 30s. It's a really easy thing to look up.

Clemens went 192-111 with 2590 Strikeouts, 3 Cy Youngs, and a AL MVP in Boston . 162-73 after leaving Boston with 4 Cy Youngs. Now maybe...he would have gotten in after say the 7th or 8th year of eligibiilty if he retired before going to Toronto but by no means was he a lock at the time. Bonds on the other hand was a lock and that's the difference: If I had to put one guy in. It's Bonds.

Well any pitcher can become good again, look at Randy Johnson he did it late in his career and I highly doubt he took PID but the thing is Roger Clemens velocity went from 92-93 back up to the 97-98

No it didnt. All that happened with Clemens is he got hurt in 1993 and 1995, thats it. Clemens was never averaging a 92mph fastball in Boston....I have no idea where you are getting that from. He's throwing about 95/96 mph here, and his velocity steadily dropped to league average (92)by the time he got to Houston.

It's not just a question of whether he would be in the HoF just based on his pre-steroids performance, but what would have happened if he had continued playing without steroids. Setting aside that he was robbed of 1 or 2 Cy Young awards before '97 ('90 was a complete joke), and the fact that we don't know for sure that he started juicing that year, he would easily have gone on to win 250-ish games, with 3000+ strikeouts, 3+ Cy Young awards, 4+ ERA titles, etc. Clearly a HoF player sans steroids.

Of course......dude...he won a Cy Young and an under 2 ERA title after steroid testing was in place in 04 and 05 when he was in his 40s.....steroids had a minimal effect on his overall stats.....he wasn't even that good on the Yankees which were the years he was using. No steroids....6 Cys, maybe 500 less innings, 35 less wins, similar ERA....it wouldn't have mattered much.

292 in 1997. 300K is a boatload. Other than strikeouts his greatest quality was homerun prevention and innings. He was harder to tee off on compared to Johnson or Schilling, and contrary to popular belief he was a groundball pitcher. He was as good as Maddux in keeping the ball in the park, and did so in the AL in Fenway & Skydome. Hence why he's overall the best of the era in my opinion.....But Maddux Pedro and Unit are all top 10 alltime along with Clemens, even top 7. Most eye popping stat of his was 1997....only gave up 9 HRS in 264 innings. That's just absurd. 1990...6 HRS in 228 innings.

People credit that pitch as a splitter but i think its closer to a forkball because of the heavy tailing action a traditional splitter normally just drops straight down

The Splitter is an off speed pitch. It's really a Changeup, but it's was renamed a SplitFingered Fastball so the pitcher can throw it with Fastball arm speed.

It depends....a forkball is closer to change up speed...the Clemens splitter was so devastating because it had fast ball arm action and enough velocity to make hitters think it was a fastball that they would swing over or hit weak ground balls....check his stats...his ground ball percentage increases after he incorporated this pitch. I think the splitter more than anything else kept him among the best pitchers in the league after his fastball lost a little zip after age 35 when he became a Yankee...when he still had the fastball velocity of his prime and the split ...in his mid career...like here ...he was devastating and less predictable....in the 80s he just threw 97 98 with a slider/curve as his occasional offspeed to keep hitters honest. But he was more 94 95 here with the splitter as his go to offspeed.

To be honest with you I don't think Clemens started using roids till a little later in his career. This season he actually wasn't very good, but then after the Red Sox let him go, he had a mysterious resurgence.

There was no resurgence.....he just finally had run support and decent bullpen help the next couple of years. In 1996 he was probably the best pitcher in the league. Stat god Bill James did an assessment of his last year in Boston and concluded he was the best pitcher in the league...at worst a very close second to Pat Hentgen...a nobody who no one even remembers. There was no decline, he was the best pitcher in the league in 96 with the Redsox and stayed that way with the Blue Jays....then finally at age 36 with the Yankees showed at least some signs of decline with decreased durability and higher ERAs...strangely the years hes accused of using. Yes he used, I believe McNamee...but dont look to the stats to show you anything, because they dont show anything, they show a guy who was absolutely excellent up to age 35, then very good, then great again when he switched to a much weaker hitting league and division in his hometown. It's not like Bonds where you can clearly see he used before either the 2000 season or the 2001 season when he gained like 40 lbs of muscle and basically cut his HR per AB ratio in half at age 36...now that's really weird. Clemens stat line is actually very normal, normal for an all time great.

I do agree. Clemens and Bonds both had HOF talent and Bonds had the numbers BEFORE he started taking them in 1999-2000. Clemens was borderline but might have gotten there had he not cheated. But both probably won't get in.

Well, Johnson didn't really become "good again" because he peaked so late and sustained that peak for so long - 1995 was the first season he had an ERA under 3.00, and he was already 31 by then. Clemens, in contrast, was washed the fuck up by 33, till he started juicing.
