The DD-2 or DD-3 (the same thing actually) is analog circuitry with a digital chip to process the signal instead of the BBD (Bucket Brigade Device) that all analog Delays used. The DM-2 BBD has 4096 Stages giving a max of 300ms. The IC in the DD-2 offers 800ms.

DD-3 is the same as long as it says "made in Japan" on a blue sticker !! the later "made in Taiwan" are different !!

Very good demo! I'd go for the Boss DM2. The Ibanez re-issue seems to exhibit a lot more distortion at the same levels. People seem to find that digital devices have a cold and lifeless sound. What it is really is absence of distortion, and perfect reproduction of the input signal. But our brain likes distortion, but not to the point of degrading the signal too much, just enough to be lively and organic. Constantly evolving sounds will always be more interesting and that's why analog is better.

Combine a digital and analog delay both with different repeat times... Little bit of hall reverb with it. .. Perfect stuff.

Dry tone starts at 1:25 , Ibanez AD9 starts at 1:50 , Boss DM-2 starts at 3:08 , and Boss DD-2 starts at 6:22. Thanks for the video, it was very enlightening for me. =)

If you want a clean slap back rockabilly sound that cuts through a live band mix, then the DD2 does it very well. Have tried a few others, but always come back to this early 80s gem.

The DM2 is by far my favourite Analog delay. I agree, I think the boss pedal is much better when Blending the long echo's with things like bending. And the DD2 is amazing. Defiantly 2 pedals I won't take out of my rig.

I've sold the Empress SD and again am using the DD2 for my delay needs. Empress makes great stuff but it was a pricey pedal which I didn't get full use of. The tape echo on the Empress was amazing.

I've seen the mint ones on E-bay go for as much as $350 USD with box and manual. The battered ones go for $250 - 300. But beware: most of them have had their trim pots played with destroying the pedal. You will read mixed reviews about the DM-2. They say that the DM-2 sounded funny and weak. That's because of the wrecked trim pots.

In my opinion the Ibanez AD-9 has the most vibe. It's got that old school mid range thing happening. I am a little surprised that the new unit would be the one with the most color, but it is. It was cool to see the old school Boss pedals. The Boss DM-2 is also a really cool pedal.

Back in the early 80's I had both the Boss delays strung together through a Marshall stack .I never really like the digital .. it cost at the time 3 times as much . The Boss Analog Delay was the best I ever found . years later I gave them away "Like an idiot " and now they are sought after .I got a new amp and was looking for one . They are on E-bay as much a 500.00. I think I paid 80.00 brand new in 84

The boss stays focused with more gain in your signal at faster tempo,, but analog is vary lush and pleasing also.

I think this is a great demo, thanks a lot mate! I remember the days when I had a DD-2 (or 3? lol). I agree with you about the Boss being more organic, it sounds very lovely to my ears.

Well the one that seems to stay on my board the most from these is the Boss DD2. I like to keep my pedal board simple and don't have 2 of the same type of effect. Also depends on the type of music I'm playing, so I switch from time to time.
@gmlasam
@gmlasam 14 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. Having both types of echo/delay in your pedalboard is a good idea, as both sound very different. Now, digital delays have much more features than they did. The boss DD5, DD6, and DD7 for example have some great features. I like the warp mode on the DD6. You can make it sound like interesting volume pedal and the DD7 has the analog delay feature that suppose to sound like a DM-2.

The Ibanez is a bit warmer than the DM-2, but the DM-2 I think has a more natural sound to it. I love the DM-2. I prefer digital over analog honestly... I like my repeats to overlap and stuff. The DD-2 has a real natural sound like the analog, but it's digital done right. Definitely one of the best delays I've ever played.

DM-2 wins the race in the analog dept! The DD-2 is cleaner with little warmth. I have a DD-3 (same pedal) and it sounds great until I play the my DM-3 next to it! Analog delay is beautiful and suits my guitar.

Its just so people get a sense of the difference, many kids get analog delays but they really want a digital one. Analog delays are darker sounding and generally have shorter delay times, digital delays can give you longer and clear crisp sounds. It also depends on the amp your playing through, I have a Marshall JMP and I prefer my Boss DD2 Digital delay through it rather then one of my Analog delays. Its a matter of taste really, so try before you buy people!!! :)

I was absolutely amazed when I heard the Dm-2 at 3:33 - when those two chords blend into each other it's divine. So I went to ebay and got myself a Dm-3 which I thought was kind of the same circuit. I just got it today and it was miles away from that sound. I tried at 9v, 12v, single coils, humbuckers... I just couldn't get that sound... I already spent so much money on delays... Should I get a Dm-2 instead? Help would be much appreciated...

It seems the DD2 gives it a bit of a reverb along with the delay repeats. I used to have a PDS-2000 from Digitech, a long time ago. I used it with very short delay setting to use it almost like a reverb. Since now I have an Orange amp with built-in reverb, I could easily use an analog delay instead of digital. By the way, very good demo. : )

@RNRDOLL yea def. I agree. It's a vintage kinda sound that matches music of it's day. Using it now isn't the same. With all the possibilities out there and stuff. forget it. If Digital delays were around back in the day, those dudes would've used it and music would be in a different place than it is now because of it. It's all about growth. They had their time with analog stuff.. and now we enjoy the digital stuff and make new sounds toward the future. Lol.

DD2 ... KICKS ALL ... You either go DD2 digital or tape, the in between analog units are a bit wishy washy , analog delays were never good , its all talk , Tape or DD2 , the rest are pretenders , the DD2's are the best investment on the market now, these cost the same as DD5's or 6's? wow , Is Pete Cornish wrong? he uses the chips from the DD2 in his delays they are diminishing in supply , a shame It was the best eve made

You're right on point, the DM2 has a much more warm sound. The DD2 sounds too bright and very synthetic. The Ibanez just doesn't sound very good, a little too compressed. DM2 is the best of the three by a mile.

It seems that the analog would better then, since 1) it is superior 2) it sounds even better with tubeamps. If you like Pink Floyd, or most of the other 70 bands, analog would be your thing! If you like 80's more, maybe you'd like the digitals better.

Play ONE note pattern of no more than 5 notes over no more than 2 seconds through all 3 pedals at once................................................... then tweak the piss out of the pedals to see how long you can make the sound regenerate and how wide a variety of sounds you can get from the output result.
