I owned a DM2 and CE2 chorus from new in the 1980s. I sold both about 10 years ago for more than twice their purchase price (far less than they attract today) because they were extremely limited in their application. The DM2 had a very short delay, which I found was good for slapback only. The mono CE2 sounded one-dimensional to me. I bought a Line 6 DL4 with the money I got for them, which has served me well ever since. I don't regret selling the Boss pedals. There is a mythology around many old pedals which I believe ignores their limited performance.

The DM2 is great for adding overall size and ambiance too, not for accurate repeats. It's warm and huge with the right settings. Plus the self oscillation is gnarly... and slapback is incredible.

Great comparison! I have the 1981 DM2 and love it. Glad to hear the Ibanez next to it. Neither one is the "better" in my opinion - just different. Both have excellent applications musically. Keep up the awesome reviews brother!

Ibanez AD9 is simply the fav pedal of Sonic Youths Lee Ranaldo. Its also Poison Ivys of the Cramps choice for old type of reverb

The boss dm2 sounds more full and warm. I'm a bit biased though because I'm a proud owner of a dm2

I like the boss dm-2 better in this demo...... seems more flexible and tweakable, and sounds great. don't know if it is worth $400 though.

I wonder how the deep blue delay from mad professor would sound next to these. It's digital but gives great vintage sounding delay

Something was wrong with that AD9 repeats/feedback. Probably the circuit was not well calibrated

They sound very similar, but neither are worth the price they fetch. There are so many great sounding analog delays out there with built in modulation for around 150$.

Love my DM2, still saving for a Carbon Copy though

I have the Ibanez Ad9 and Boss DM2 and like them both but the Boss always gets the gig. The MXR M-118 is extremely nice and still chasing one. WEM Copicat is real deal tape delay and that just has to be heard to be believed. I tried an MXR Carbon Copy and didn't dig it at all, too "clicky".

the ibanez sounds cleaner. in the context of their day (pre Boss DD3), maybe that was better.

I had the DM-3 for a while and was highy disappointed. For the outrageous 2nd hand prices the DM-2 goes for these days, you could almost afford a strymon Timeline, which is much more versatile, though not analog.

Boss DM-2 instant Classic is more dynamically rich with stronger repeats and more modulation. The Ibanez AD9 is a close clone to the Boss DM-2, even copying the color.

I think the Boss sounds a lot warmer.
