Finally I got my hands on a wazacraft speaker.
Lets compare it against the stock katana speaker.
I'm really curious what you guys think of it? Is it worth to upgrade?
Please let me know in the comments.

For me the WAZA takes it for sure. Hearing this I now know that it is the speaker that I don't like in my Katana 100 MKII. It is the strange tubby low end that I hate in the stock speaker. I get around it by setting my global EQ to try and correct it and am quite happy with it overall. I feel the WAZA just has a much more focused midrange and that is where the guitar is after all.

I’m late to the party but, although I like the sound of the stock speaker for metal tones I can see it getting lost in a mix. By itself sounds better than the waza, but the waza does have that old rock feel and sound that would cut through a mix. That’s the dilemma I have I love the sound of a scooped heavy low end punching high’s when noodling at home I just know that the moment I play with others that whole magical thing would disappear.

Very useful video, thank you. I’ve always wondered what it was that people loved about the Katana so much, because I’ve never been able to get decent sounds out of them. To me they always sounds like someone’s scratching their fingernails down a blackboard! I now realise it’s probably the speaker. I do prefer the sound of the Waza;it would be really useful, though, if you compared each riff from one speaker to the same riff from the other, rather than playing a series of riffs on one speaker then a series on the other, because it makes it harder to compare absolutely like for like.

I listened very closely and the Katana speaker kicked the waza speakers butt. It was clear as day. The bottom ends were were clean and the lead was spot on. The waza sounded lifeless and farty with the overdrive. It sounded okay with cleans, but the Katana was a much more universal speaker. With saying that if you want a more vintage/Jensen sound the waza, but if you want best of both worlds the Katana stock speaker hands down!!!🎸

agreed!! I bought the Katana Artist about 9 months ago, and have not been happy with it. Very thin, tinny, twangy and "farty" as you aptly say. I was thinking of buying another amp, but might change out the speaker and see if that helps.... cuz this amp suuuuuuucks!

I think that I would get two 2x12 MKII rigs, keep one with the stock speakers and set one up with Waza speakers so that you get the best of both worlds running them in stereo. It would give you the ability to clean one amp up and run the other a little more driven and give you the effect of two guitars playing the same riff. Set the stock speaker one to a Fender Twin Tweed tone and the Waza equipped for a darker marshall dirty tone. Run a cordless setup to both units so that one guitar feeds both amps without having to slave the amps allowing to control the amps separately it would give you more expressive options. I like the tone of the Waza much better myself and prefer the Artist model over the 2x12. That said a few tweaks of the cabinet construction and a pair of Waza speakers in the new MKII 2x12 to make it a 2x12 Artist and I'd be a very happy guy. Thanks for the comparison, Cheers!

They both sounded good, but the Waza out of the box requires a break in to reach its full potential. This is true for all speakers, but the Katana speaker likely had completed a break in period. The test was well done, thanks for doing it.

Thank you for posting your video, its very helpful --- I had a Katana MKII 50W that I used everyday for 2 months. I then upgraded to the MKII Artist Katana that has the Waza speaker. Using the very same tones I was using for the last 2 months, when the Artist arrived and I played on it, I could immediately tell the difference, and there is no doubt about it, the Waza speaker on the Artist is significantly and easily better ... does not need a genius to tell the difference... as is it is supposed to be, being double the price of the 50W Mkii I previously had. Is it worth it? Well for years and countless hours of enjoying a significantly higher quality sound, $300 more is nothing at all.

I think the Kat sounds like "Gar Ga Gar" (cuts the mix better) and the Waza like "Gur Gu Gur". I'd recommend just keeping the Kat and save the Waza $190.00(US) for something else like save-up $150.00(US) more and buy another Katana-100 MK2 Combo then run them in "Stereo-Link" mode! If you really like the Waza sound get two Katana Artist MK2s and run them in "Stereo-Link" mode from the get-go! ;)

I may be incorrect, but doing basically an A/B switch doesn't do one of the speakers justice. Tweak the amp to the best sound you can get (to your ears) using one speaker, then record, preferably from a loop as this will take player variance out of the equation. Then install the other speaker and re-tweak it to the best possible sound (to your ears) and record using the same loop used in the first recordings. If we don't tweak the amp to optimize the interaction with each speaker, the speaker that the amp was originally tweaked with has an advantage. That's how we do it. Thank you for the video. Though I don't think we heard the Waza at it's best, I can hear the potential. To my ears, the stock speaker may possible be more flexible, but the Waza has so much more character to it, and excellent character at that. I look forward to hearing it with the amp settings tweaked for it.

just upgraded mine as I recently pimped my KAT to look like a boutique amp (stealth Katana) and want use it at gigs instead of my Artist (which sounds warmer, the closed back might be part of the reason). I wasn't too sure to begin with but with my playing yesterday I found that the cranked up lead sounds my Waza seems to have more of the fat chewy sound than the stock. Just feels like a fuller rounder tone and much closer to the sounds I get on identical patches loaded into the Artist. Some people say the mids are scooped on the stock speaker.... that would explain it. They are both great but I'm definitely warming to my new Waza after playing it for a few hours yesterday and so far not regretting the upgrade. On the video comparisons around 8:00 mark onwards it sounded a bit like something gets taken away when he switches from the WAZA to the stock. Quite subtle but nevertheless noticeable.

Katana speaker is a g12T... not everyone's cup of tea with the spiky highs but they will be bell like with cleans and the Waza is clearly a Greenback so they are made for dirt. There is no speaker that does it all, but boost the mids and raise the highs a little with the Greenbacks and you are good with cleans.

@@DutchGuitarDude ok, not in a sense if HiFi speakers, but in a sense of guitar speakers definitely as ut doubles as acoustic guitar speaker. And hence it needs more pronounced mid highs. I did some A/B comparisons with my Roland AC60 and Katana in acoustic channel ( no effects) with few my electroacoustic and Katana handles it great as oposed to my Mustang 100 with all emulations switched off. True it does not have the extreme presence of AER, but can compare with all other acoustic amplifiers... That was one of the reasons, I was kind of holding on buy initially, cause drive tones don't sound very nice through acoustic amps (with pedals). But luckily Katana has fine global and channel eq to handle this. But anyway, thx for your time to shoot this video. Was wondering long time and it confirmes, drive sounds sound better through celestion to me. These recordings seem to be relatively low level so I'm not convinced the benefit of the Wazza speaker is demonstrated fully as I believe it would pull away (sound wise) at gigging volume particularly overdriven. The standard speaker is great on clean sounds while the Wazza starts to sound more like a green back at volume. Thanks for the work you have put into this comparison. One question:- Was the Wazza speaker 'broken in' prior to this demo because I believe it would result in an even warmer smoother tone?

these 2 speakers' mic'd get good tones. But to me, the stock speaker sounds a little better on the cleaner tones. I guess its really hard to judge when not listening to it though directly in the room. like with anything, when we listened to the beatles records through those vox amps, we heard the mic'd up amps, and not the same thing they were hearing. you get a vox and it sounds different. you hear a mashall amp cranked and mic'd, then experience it in person, and it is different. will be same for this amp too. now I am just wondering if changing one of the speakers in my cab to the waza will be worth while, or not.

Definitely moments when I couldn't believe how similar they sounded. I have read the Waza speaker is simply not worth it, unless dealing with a live situation and blasting it. There is almost no difference until then. Most of us will not be playing at home loud enough to justify the Waza price. Think the best solution is to just get a Boss Artist Amp, and skip the Katana Amps, all together, but if you already have a Katana, absolutely no reason to buy a Waza speaker.

Your action is too low. I can hear fret rattle so clearly.

I own an Artist MK II and it sucks for clean. Way too dark. I prefer my Katana 50 MKI. I figured the speaker was the problem. I should have bought the standard 100 1x12 and a Weber Grey Wolf speaker. I also don't love the front panel. I'm always above it. I can't see the front panel. I'd prefer top panel. All you're missing on the 100 is the Amp Link festure and the Global EQ which is so subtle its like whatever! 🙄 Oh and the bank switch that should be on every Katana.

You are exactly right, and no amount of treble/presence can fix it.

Also, the global eq and “contour” are silly. Boss don’t even bother to tell us what they do.
