This variety is called "Fluffy Ruffles". They're very beautiful. I have one that I inherited from my mother who inherited it from her grandmother who was born in the late 1850s. It's probably over a hundred years old.

Thank you for watching :) I think when our ferns get so big and pot bound they dry up way to fast and are usually in a constant state of stress. By dividing it and giving it some fresh soil you will be well on your way to a happy plant again :) until it gets pot bound again :)

I've never had a plant in my life. But over a year ago I was staying over my sisters house, and my "Pop" brought over a cpl boston ferns. One was in pretty good shape,but the other was in "sad condition". I looked at it and knew it didn't have a chance...thought poor little guy. It looked at me and said...help. so I highjacked him... I literally said I got you dude! Trimmed it up,gave "dude" water...and put him in the window. He's all grown up and doing great! He's getting a new pot tomarrow.

My ferns have always loved water, so I water them often, plus I put them under the shower head for a couple minutes, and they perk up immediately! Thanx for the enlightenment of cutting the ferns back. I didn’t know it could be done.

:) No I'm not a Botanist.. I did however go to school to study horticulture so i have a good base knowledge of how plants grow :) I worked in greenhouses for a while too and really enjoyed it :) I now work at United Parcel Service (UPS) I been working in the warehouse for the last 5 years. I really like that too.. i prefer having plants as a hobby :) I would love to see your grapefruit trees, I love Citrus. and that's awesome that Bill the maragold is still doing well :)

I just bought a fern.... repotted it and took off all the dead “stuff.” This is my first fern so went on KZfaq and found you. So now I think I will divide this fern .... I felt it was somewhat root bound when I bought it ... and I’ll make two and bring one indoors. I like the idea of a pot in a pot to keep it moist. Thanks for all the tips!

I keep my boston fern in a terrarium with a tray of water at all times. It has started to make stolons everywhere in the terrarium.

Having trouble with my newish indoor Boston fern, so this was very helpful. I now realize that I need to divide it and pot it up with more soil-the roots on this fern are ridiculous! They take over everything so fast. It probably can’t stay moist enough because even though I put it in a new slightly bigger pot with a tad more soil around the base-the root ball is still taking over the whole thing. It was too little too late I think. Time to divide and conquer 😂. Thanks for the help! Subscribed.

Thanks for this video I just saved a fern from Walmart. I hope it survives I've already trimmed the dead leaves and repotted into a bigger pot, the roots were overgrown no wonder it's dying, there wasn't any room to spread.

Beginner here. My lemon button fern has been the learning curve for me. It's growing a lot but it's leaves keep turning brown. I've changed lighting, watering, and now I've moved it into my bathroom where I hope the humidity of my hot showers will help it out. 😣

thank you for the video! :) I've been planting flowers in my yard & I found a lil fern on sale at Walmart... it was screaming for help! it looks so pitiful... so I got it! He needs to be repotted SO BAD. I'm hoping this one will grow like my mom's did. she had a fern that was 25 FOOT long (the longest strand of leaves) She just kept loving it and repotting it, so it just kept growing!

So, good video. But listening to all those dry crunchy neected leaves, I couldn't wait to see what they looked like after a couple weeks of taking care of them. I feel like I will never be whole again.

My poor Boston Fern .. looked worse than yours. So .. just a few minutes ago I was trimming her back ~ all those dead fronds etc .. and she is looking very sad, however I did notice some tiny new fronds appearing. While eating my soup I thought I would look on KZfaq for some help and VOILÀ there you are PlantzNThings! Once I have finished the soup, I will be going straight back to split up my poor fern just as you suggested! Fingers crossed ~ this poor thing has been up and down and wasn't doing well before we moved to this house a year ago and still hasn't 'caught up' with how beautiful she was before. I need to try this. I bought a Boston Fern for the cats so they can have it on the patio, but the patio fried the poor plant. So I have it out front where it can get rain and I will need to watch your video a third time and take time on the weekend to care for it.

I have two ginormous Boston ferns, they are the queens of my shade garden. I bring them in for the winter. My question is, should I divide the ferns or simply re-pot them?

Ive got a boston fern that i up potted i got it in spring/esrly summer i used to water daily now its cooling down so i water when its light. I mist it with the hose and sibce its cold its been in and out depending in the weather. Its fricken huge, i can barely fit it n my bathroom. I take it in for my shower so it canneat up sone humidity, which its always so big afterwards. Idk what im gonna do with it for winter. I pruned it just yesterday i thibj the cold has damaged skme old frawns

My fern looks so sad, it makes me want to cry, literally. But I'm too scared to cut it in half, can't it shock the plant? Watching this video did give me the courage to prune it, so all I need is a better pot and hopefully it will be happy and full!

Can I grow Boston Fern in plastic zipper bags that are in pockets of vertical garden planter? I got a some of does 4 pocket vertical pockets planters that are for outdoor use. Now since I live in apartment, I have no good outdoor space. Of course, I do not want to screw up my wall with water, so I thought to use zipper bags to fix water leak problem. Can something like that work or do you have any better ideas? I am a beginner in this, so any help would be more than appreciated :)

i have the same problem but my fern is in a 10 inch pot and lookin bad , yes my family who dont live with me want me to get rid of my plants and i did for awhile but i wasnt as happy so now i just ignore them and do what i want love your videos ty

i'm not sure what its called.. i've had it for 20 years. my grandmother gave it to me as a gift. they used to sell it at a company called lee valley tools. however i just checked their online store and they don't seem to carry it anymore

Hi. Great video! I received my first fern through the mail and the bag it came in must’ve got folded in half because almost all of them are broken about 3 inches from the tip. Should I leave them as is and see if they repair themselves or just cut the broken portion off and if so will it start to grow where it’s been cut off? Thanks so much. Have a great day.

I just want to know what to do with my clipping I got from someone. My husband waited too late to buy them this Spring and I lucked up on a clipping; it's in a wet paper towel that's soaking in water. Help

I recently bought some ferns online, which was the worst plant purchasing experience so far. So the seller sent me some almost dried out ferns, bare root wrapped in a wet napkin. The roots are all dried up as well. I potted them in moist soil as soon as I got them. Its been three days...they look pathetic. Do you think they will survive? Or should I just take the roots out and put them in water?

My boston ferns are all dying and dry. It is HOT and dry where I live so I make it a point to keep the soil moist and mist them too but so luck so far. Do let me know what else I could do to save them. 😭😭

I have a very large fern that I've been trying to maintain since spring (for some reason ferns and I don't get along-I have trouble maintaining them while I love plants and haven't had trouble with any other species; either water too much or not enough) of last year and essentially made it through winter indoors and I've moved the fern back outside in indirect sunlight and fertilized, but now my fern is very brown and losing most of its leaves, I'm contemplating transplanting the fern to the yard, perhaps the environment would be more to its liking, promoting growth and a healthier plant instead of being in a container; any words of wisdom would greatly be appreciated!
