Literally the most successful demo ever. When assigned a pro sound engineer by the label, the engineer said he couldn't improve it.
@neechee5150
@neechee5150 Жыл бұрын
BS. Producer John Boylan is on record stating that the drum and acoustic instrument racks on Toms demo were amateurish and could not be used in for the final recording. Boylan hired LA Engineer Paul Grupp to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments. Tom then had to rerecord all of the drum and acoustic instrument tracks. Also all of Brads vocals were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C by producer John Boylan and the vocal quality on the demo is poor and amateurish compared to the vocals on the record.

The intro to this song is so epic with it's up and down changeovers that no other band has ever been able to reproduce to this day. And the rest of the song has such a feel good sound with lyrics, voice and epic guitar sounds that you can't help but feel energized after hearing it, that's why it's one of my most favorite songs of all time.

So many good songs on that first album. Brad Delp had one of the greatest rock voices in history. The notes he was able to hit in More Than a Feeling were phenomenal. "Foreplay" can best be appreciated when listened to at high volume, while driving at night, at high speed on a dark country road, in a '71 Mustang, during a Midwest thunder storm, with the headlights off, and the road lit only by the constant flashes of lightning. So glad to see #Boston getting respect from great people like you two! Back in the day, they were ridiculed by the press (I'm talking to you, Rolling Stone Magazine), who called them "corporate rock." The ironic thing is, nobody stayed truer to their own vision than Tom Scholz. After the label forced them to release Don't Look Back prematurely in '78, it would be another 8 years before Tom would release another album (Third Stage). I would love to hear Kel's reaction to Hitch a Ride - that's one of my all-time favorite songs: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrxjo7VpnLKRhGw.html - I got the first Boston album as a birthday gift when I was 13 (March of '77) and I still have that vinyl in my collection. It's, without a doubt, one of the most solid albums of the era. Love it!! Hats off to the late Brad Delp - one of the finest rock vocalists ever. Such a tragic loss...

I heard it in the summer of 76'. I was sixteen... I was so blown away that I thought it was fake... THEN, I saw Heart (hadn't heard of them til that night) and BOSTON at a place that held about 800 people, all general admission. It was life changing that night... To be sixteen and see the Wilson sisters (Nancy!!!!) rock out like dudes, and then Boston start their headliner set with Sholz coming out of the floor playing a huge keyboard with a guitar strapped around his neck while he sat at the keys... It was inFREAKINcredible! We collectively lost our minds that night! I listened to More Than A Feeling EVERY morning while I was getting ready for school. BOSTON actually took over as my ALL-TIME FAV band for a while but KISS wrestled back my heart from them sometime that fall. Good times.

@@testodude Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on Foreplay, Long Time and Let Me Take You Home. Barry plays lead guitar on Long Time and in addition to all of the solos on Long Time Barry plays the huge power chords. Barry also plays lead and slide guitar on Let Me Take You Home. This is all documented as fact when Tom had to admit under oath that Barry played on the songs that I mentioned as a part of the law suits between he and Barry. The post litigation liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record also clearly state that Barry plays on these songs as well as the fact that Fran plays bass on two songs and that Brad plays acoustic 12 string on one song.

Tom Scholz had a masters degree in mechanical engineering from MIT and worked in R&D for Polaroid. He built a music studio in his basement in Boston. He played every instrument on this song except the drums and vocals and all but the vocals were recorded in the basement. Singer Brad Delp recorded those vocals in a studio in Los Angeles. Other than a solo or tep on other songs, this holds for the entire album. In 1976. this became the biggest debut album ever and is still a top seller at 17 million copies. Tom also designed and built his own guitar amplifier. He would sell a line of amps and effects under the Rockman name. Sadly the singer committed suicide 12 years ago and the drummer died 2 years ago.

When i first listened Boston I was like 10 years old. My older brother had recorded tape from a LP and he played every morning in a old radio . I was like “ What is that horrible sound? Then I grew up and made it my favorite band , along with Queen. I love all the songs from the two first album and one of my favorite is Used to bad news , not as complex produced as other’s songs but a great feeling theme, and that’s what’s about it no? More than a feeling ?

R.I.P. Mr. Bradley Delp - - one of the best, male voices in the history of well - - TIME. Even Tom Scholz stated that his voice was angelic, I.M.H.O. few men were ever blessed with a voice like that. Peace y'all & God Bless ME, I'm going from this reaction of yours to the Eric Johnson "Cliffs Of Dover". O.M.G. - - you two have such GREAT taste!

The Boston debut album sold 17 million in the first year in 1976. Guns n Roses debut album 'Appetite for Destruction' in 1987 broke that record with 45 million sold, and that record still stands.

As far as best selling debut albums go, Appetite For Destruction surpassed it by a million copies in '87. Boston 17 mil, G&R 18 mil. Appetite is a GREAT record but personally I prefer Boston. What Tom Scholz did was ground breaking and revolutionized record making. Hell, I'd guess Appetite made use of a lot of his innovations.

That, just like all the Tool reactions, was the precise reason I love watching reaction videos. All this music I love I can now hear for the first time vicariously through Kel's ears. It truly gives me goosebumps when I see the look on her face as the music begins and then her reactions to the hooks and solos. Priceless! Thanks guys!

High school in the 70s ..there were some songs that stoners liked and other songs that jocks like but not a lot that both groups seemed to like. Then Boston hit in 76 and everyone really liked it. Now 40-plus years later and it still sounds so good.

I would say Boston's debut album was my most played vinyl....from the 70s out of all the vinyl I owned. It's almost like guaranteed goosebumps; every time. Satisfied with every song. Great listen if you're driving on open roads....late at night, too :)

I'll never forget the first time I heard this album. At that time, my uncle worked for Columbia Records (CBS) now Sony. It had not been released yet and my uncle came to visit and he pulls out this album and says you've got to hear this! It was just in a white sleeve, no cover yet. He put it on the stereo and our minds were blown. It debuted on the radio a few months later.

I'm an old timer from south of Boston in a town called Hull, MA. I got spoiled having a place called the Surf Nantasket Ballroom where I saw Aerosmith and J. Geils Band in 1972 for $5.00. The Surf was sold and it became Uncle Sam's and then Boston played there. Needless to say that I consider myself blessed to have lived during such a time.
