I've brought together the two Syrian Air Boeing 747SPs YK-AHA and YK-AHB in to two leading UK cities. Of the two, one appears in the original livery and the other in the last recent livery. Both jets no longer are no longer active.

That must have been a very memorable trip! That plane and its twin were two of the best looking 747SPs flying!

The baby 747 in all her glory! These live long in my memory climbing out of Heathrow with that steep climb out, they would hang in the air with those Pratt & Whitney's roaring, everyone around would look up. Great days.

Yessirreee...them was the days without question. Especially the baby SPs. If Boeing could have delayed the 744 for about 10 years...I bet the SP operators would be double if not tripled!

Classic video. Nice to see the SP, yellow piers on T4 and you also caught 3 different BA liveries (Landor, World tails & Chatham Docks) in one clip

I flew every year starting in 1993 until 2007 with Syrianair from FRA TO ALP in the early nineties there were no airbuses only the 727 and 747sp The regular flight route was always FRA DAM via ALP I miss this beautiful time. The airbus a 320 was start using 1997 I think . After this time they don’t use the 727 so much .

It always struck me as odd, why Syrian would need such an aircraft when most of their far-flung routes were European, though they may have operated JFK for a brief period. The 747SP was designed for ’long-thin” routes, i.e. LAX-SYD, JNB-JFK, a DC-10/L1011/A300 could have easily made DAM-LHR/FRA/CDG.

True, smaller would have done the job, but we're glad they got these two beauties!

My understanding is that Syrian Airlines has suffered from a lack of resources since the 1960s, due to the Syrian government not placing a high priority on developing the civil aviation sector. Other factors include Syria having a limited budget compared with other Middle Eastern countries, the tricky politics with Western countries, who happen to manufacture the better civil airplanes, and they suffered heavily from corruption and lack of expertise in the upper echelons when it comes to airline management and fleet planning, although I have heard that their civil pilots and maintenance engineers are descent and got hired abroad (in the Gulf) quite often before 2011. Regarding aircraft choice, I think that what ended up happening is that they had to look around in the second hand market for whatever bargains they could find at the time when the political leadership signalled that it was willing to divert some resources to the airline and foreign relations allowed them to buy wester manufactured aircraft. You say the B747SP is low capacity, but it was their highest capacity airplane for a long time, and I think they got it as other airlines started moving on to newer types. A bit similar to how they are now buying second hand A340-300s when every other airline is trying to get rid of them. It is a shame, but I think their approach to commercial aircraft acquisition is similar to buying a second hand car, just trying to find the best offer in the market that fits their budget and then figuring out how to live with it.

@@RamiTeen Syrian Air actually received both of their 747SP’s (YK-AHA and YK-AHB) new from Boeing in 1976, so they didn’t acquire them second-hand.
