Rivet heading tools are generally used in pairs. In todays video we look at the making of a bottom rivet header to go in the the anvil. I tend to prefer the riveting tools that fit the anvil because they stay put in use as compared to one that just sits on the anvil.

Hi John .Knowing I to needed a bottom rivet tool.I to built mine just yesterday.Useing my new home built ball tool from coil spring.I found a piece 2"x4" in which I made a rivet inpression on . I weld my bottom rivet tool onto a 3"x7" on one far end then on other end I weld a hardy tool that held the rivet tool very well in center of my undersize anvil. Also built your double calipers just yesterday Thanks again John

So the last 2 days in a row as I was watching your video you set your glove on fire. I found myself yelling to my phone "John! Your glove is on fire!" My daughter laughed at me and said dad I don't think he can hear you. LOL. Another great video. Thanks John.

I don't think they ever actually caught fire. But they do smoke as they get hot while my hand inside the glove doesn't. Alt least not as fast

Good John, I have made a rivet set, but when I use the top tool it seems to crunch the end of the rivet i'm forging down, puts a funny mark around it it's not symmetrical like the head of the rivet.
@BlackBearForge

Sounds like you have just a little to much material for the head.

Wouldn’t you stamp the size rivet it was made for so next time you need to rivet you can easily grab the right tool without having to try them one by one to fined the one it fits like a set of drill bits set up in size order
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 жыл бұрын
Probably a good idea. However I have over 100 sizes of drills in the shop and only use 5 sizes of rivets, so it isn't that hard to find the right one.

At the moment only 5 have you not heard the saying “the blacksmith with the most rivet headers (Tools) wins “ I bet you said the same thing about tongs once but now you have hundreds you still have decades of blacksmithing left in you. I think if you are already stamping a tool putting the size it’s meant for just makes sense but we all have our own way of doing something this was only meant as an idea for those that read the comments

I understand that tool height is up to each individual smith but why do I see so many with their anvils so low that they have to bend over so much? That can't be good for your back while swinging a hammer

I prefer my anvil a bit higher. I think many people are using old recommendations from a time when strikers were more common
