I watched a video where they showed the traditional way they made Iron Ore in the Country Called Burkina Faso in Africa. Very detailed, making the coal, getting the iron ore from the ground, getting the flux from the ground, making the tubes and bellows, amazing to watch! Rare to find a video that demonstrates something so well. I wonder if I'd be able to do something like this in a very nice neighborhood? I think that I'd have a Karen knocking on the front door saying there's too much smoke :)

another important detail is that this setup is portable. it would be heavy in a backpack with the hammers in hand, but you could probably fit all of these materials into a typical home gardening wagon or wheelbarrow and transport them wherever you'd need to, possibly while out looking for usable scrap metal that's been abandoned.

For tempering what should be the best color? Straw? Do you have any advice? :)
@BlackBearForgeКүн бұрын
It depends on the steel and its end use. For a small file knife I aim for bronze, straw may be a bit hard

Thank you for all your videos, I love what you are teaching and how you are helping people reach it under such a minimal budget. Just so you are aware, a rock which has water inside of it, can infact make the rock explode due to the water reaching a boiling tempature. I have seen multiple rock explosions made from river rock being used to make fire pits. This is of course natural stones not concrete. As a teenager my neighbors fire pit which I watched them build, exploded from the center. It had nothing in it other than the rocks that lined the bottom and the sides, and brush from our yards.

I think the small one without the flair would look good with perpendicular straps going across the feet to hold it in place.

The feet could be vine leaves and the arch of the handle could be a twisted vine.

A word of advice John Buy some end mills and chuck them into your drill press to start a hole on a n angled piece of steel. Then proceed as normal. As usual your work is well achieved. Your pieces just get better with your age. Cheers

Looking at the European cathedral door hinges latches and ornamental iron work from centuries past. They were craftsmen who worked their way through the ranks of their guilds.
@BlackBearForge2 күн бұрын
True, but these certification programs are decades short of what those craftsman went through. It’s a good start but one still needs to put the work in over many years, whether you got certified or not.

Thanks for this video. If I ever get to the stage when I'd like one, I'd probably go for the press just because it's quieter, and that'll help keep me on better terms with my neighbours, and happy neighbours are important. Also, you were wondering why your video's lighting (and later the focus) kept changing. The solution is to put the camera's exposure and focus settings on manual, because on automatic the camera isn't smart enough to know what to focus on and is easily confused. Set up using auto, and then switch to manual to lock the settings, until you move the camera and need it to focus on something else.
