"Bottoms" knocked us on our butts. We both loved the sweetly raunchy indie comedy, starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebri as misfit teenage lesbians who start a fight club after school to hit on the hot cheerleaders they like. The movie has shades of "Heathers," "Superbad" and "Booksmart," but is very much on its own wavelength. Directed by Emma Seligman ("Shiva Baby"), co-written by Seligman and Sennott. Co-starring Ruby Cruz, Nicholas Galitzine, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber and Marshawn Lynch. In theaters now.

I saw this last night with a full house at the Brooklyn Alamo Drafthouse and LOVED it! There are so many asides and so much self-awareness within self-awareness. The "PLAN TO BOMB SCHOOL" moment KILLED ME. I also overheard, as the credits rolled, the following exchange: - "I cried during the fight at the end." - "You what?!" - "I just love beautiful cinema."

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You Christy and Alonso for this review! Bottoms was on my radar to a certain extent, but I had completely forgot it came out this weekend. Boosted by your amazing review, I hightailed it over to Burbank tonight and got to see Bottoms in a rather large, rather packed theater and it's definitely my favorite movie of the summer and maybe even of the year. Huge laughs, great characters and performances, and (in my screening, at least) big cheers from some of the big moments in the film. I'm a 52 year-old straight, white, married father of 2 boys and I love that my 3 favorite movies of the summer have been Bottoms, Joyride and Barbie, proving that great stories and great storytellers, that might not be targeting us specifically, are right in front of us all if we're simply open and willing to allow them to work on us. I will be singing the praises of Bottoms for quite a while.

3.5/5 for me. Elevator pitch: “Booksmart” meets “fight club”. It’s INSANE 🤣🤣🤣. Marshawn Lynch I thought could’ve been used a lot more (his stuff with Conan is COMEDIC GOLD). Ruby Cruz I enjoyed very much (she’s one of the best parts of the “Willow” series). I thought Havana Rose Liu was really charming. Summer Joy Campbell is UNHINNNNGED in this and it was 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. And there was a song that played in the third act (after the big reveal that was goin on) and I couldn’t help but start singing along. There were moments in my screening where the audio was cutting in & out (idk if your screening was the same but the scene where they go to …’s house there was no sound until you hear a splatter against the window).

Since you didn't mention it; Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri had a series of KZfaq videos a few years ago (I think it was before Edebiri jumped to popularity on The Bear but after Sennott did Shiva Baby -or maybe before that also) where they played a couple of friends and those sketches had the same energy you're describing. That kind of absurdist but also kind of realistic in a weird way and very dry comedy. I can't wait to watch this, I don't know when it comes out here in Spain but ever since I saw the trailer a few months back this has been in my radar. Glad you guys loved it.

Very late to the show on Bottoms, and I came here to hear you great folks review it. I went into the first 15 minutes of this slowly but surely and damn this thing grew on me. When you watch a movie with friends, with drinks, in a theater, it's very easy to get caught up in the atmosphere and laugh. But I watched this alone, sober, in my house, and I had, I'd say, about 25 laugh out loud moments, alone in my living room. Alonso, I think this is WAY BETTER than Barb and Star, and I love your enthusiasm for it. Great review Christie and Alonso :)

Also I have to admire the level of directing from seligman. She’s only like 28 and is already being more ambitious and different from shiva to bottoms. With shiva, I wanted to run from it it was so anxious and like a Jewish family horror movie. With shiva I wanted to run from it, with bottoms I wanted to “hug” it. While a lot of the same themes in shiva are in bottoms, clearly from a cinematography and overall “mood” and emotional standpoint … totally different. Oh and can Rachel senott and Emma seligman be like the new Scorsese/ deniro? Like I never wanna see a seligman movie without senott in front of camera and Vice versa

Kaia Gerber, I had no idea who she was until now, but she definitely had some speaking parts in American Horror Stories. I just watched it for the first time a few days ago, and she gave a very powerful opening monologue that introduced her character. I found her acting impressive for someone I had never seen before. But also, she's in the newer season of American Horror Story, and many people say she is terrible in it. So, maybe she lacks some range and needs more experience.

Because she does not have any acting talent at all. She is dying to be an actress. That’s why they keep linking her with actors. Austin Butler should be embarrassed that he’s “dating“ her. He does movies like playing, Elvis, playing an infamous villain in Dune two playing the lead in a biker gang movie and his “girlfriend “ plays a highschooler.@@jayrockhammer

@@BreakfastAllDay You indicated it's genuinely funny and smart, which takes it right out of awful. When Alonso was talking about the way a lot of comedies start out edgy, sharp and funny but then as the movie progresses, become increasingly nice and safe and dull, I knew exactly what he meant. "Bachelorettes" is a good example of that along with most every "raunchy" comedy ever made. If as Alonso says "Bottoms" avoids that tendency, that would really make it stand out from the crowd.

Wow. I'm going to try and power through this movie again, to give it a fair shake, but I found it instantly annoying. The two leads are hyper verbal yet have very little of interest to say. They open their mouths and I want to run in the other direction, they're so annoying. I see and recognize what you all are syaing about it, but on a gut level, I don't want to watch these people at all. I will give it another go though.(I paid for the rental after all) I might have just been "in a mood" yesterday! lol

I saw this movie yesterday, September 3. I have to say I thought it was terrible. The thing is, I wanted to like it. The idea of twisting the teen sex comedy on its head by having two lesbians play the main characters is a really good one. But, it's very poorly written and very poorly directed. The dialogue isn't witty or funny, the scenes are cut and pasted in and the ancillary characters are just cardboard cut-outs. I think their idea presented so many opportunities for hilarious and insightful scenes and they missed every one. If you would've presented the premise for this movie to Tina Fey, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, or Tig Navarro they would've made a movie 10 times funnier and with more insight and with more heart than this disappointment.
