It's interesting how after a few months you can learn to stop paying attention to or caring about your hair. Can't wait to see one of your customers make a testimonial video of either their upgraded kits or their GR setup. Would LOVE to see a GR listening room fully finished and burned in. Great job as always Danny! Looking forward to future tech talk Tuesday. (Maybe on why you decided to include a studio monitor in your lineup of products. I think that's awesome! Would love to know what was your inspiration and thought process behind their design.). 😉

Well, you definitely convinced me to swap (upgrade) the parts on my vintage Pioneer S-3000. TAD Drivers, and they sound fantastic, great depth and very natural but their crossovers are all full of Electrolytic caps and laminated core inductors. They sounded like that already far better than quite a bit of modern speakers I have listened to. I wish I could ship, but they are 65Kg a piece from up north in Canada, so... that's rather tricky. I took the inductors to a nearby electronics supply shop and they measured the DCR. Based on the listening test, measurements here AND the booklet, they already measure quite good, so I would be aiming just to the upgrade parts based on your overall advise. Will be installing once the inductors arrive (I had to order a custom made pair due to the mH value) I am yet to see where this takes me. Will advise. I am quite intrigued because if they improve, then I do not know what to say... Those ceramic TAD drivers are stellar. The Crossover is rather simple, all 2nd order, and an L pad on the Midrange (4dB drop) .
@dannyrichie9743
@dannyrichie9743 3 жыл бұрын
The DCR of the inductors is not that much of an issue. It is the inductance that needs to be measured. And a cap upgrade will take you further than anything. Let me know how it all turns out.

@@dannyrichie9743 Hi Danny. All I can say is, there are no words for this. I am absolutely astonished by the increase on performance. Unfathomable to me how these speakers simply took into their second wind in its sound. Outrageous, these speakers are true modern contenders of anything I've listened to in my life. The level of detail retrieval is absurd, they sound like headphones. First day listening I thought something had gone wrong because I had listening fatigue after listening for about an hour or so. My hearing was starting to feel duller. I couldn't understand why since everything sounded so clean and spacious, and measurements in were simply great! Well, I what I noticed is that I was played for over an hour at RIDICULOUSLY LOUD levels and I did not felt it was that loud at all. I've never had such experience before where it is past 90dB and I don't mind it. I don't like listening loud regularly. Mills resistors, solen air core inductors, mundorf/jantzen capacitors is what I found available around here. Still sounds natural, tone is rather similar but textures of metal are much more real and sparkly now, decay is brilliant. Bass was not punchy at all, it was soft and tuneful. Now it kicks, it is still tuneful, but it's incredibly fast and I can hear a lot of things going on in the drums membranes. It's lavish detail, simply lavish. Those TAD transducers are far more than I ever thought they would be, and they are vintage. Wow... Thank you for all you have shared so people like me can understand better this world and enjoy music like we deeply do. Best regards! I'd love to upload some pictures somewhere to share. Suggestions?

Wish you showed the parts in the new crossover designs like most of your videos. The B&W in particular. The Stock crossover only has 5 parts, with the woofer only having a pretty low value inductor. The tweeter circuit with the pair of pretty high value Capacitors stock always seemed odd. Not sure why they wanted such a high ( 4k ) crossover point on these as the kevlar woofer doesn't like playing that high.

Hi Danny. My comment about the 1.7 crossover is below. Even if you don't do an episode on it, please explain the series crossover topology that the Magnepans use. I think it would be extremely educational to many here who understand standard crossovers (I upgraded my Maggie 20.1 crossovers with Mundorf Silver in Oils and Hyperlitz inductors) but have no idea how to upgrade the 1.7i or 3.7i or 20.7i new crossover designs. @GR-Research Thank you, that was most informative. I would be very interested in your thoughts on the original Epos loudspeaker, the ES-14. It was similar to this one in that it had a single cap as crossover; the bass driver was an excellent piece of engineering with a particularly short voice coil running in a very deep gap which was designed to roll off at 6dB/Octave. My pair still sound superb to this day. I'd be fascinated to know if you think the minimal x-over in the ES-14 is as troublesome as here and if you are able to suggest a crossover design that could be tried instead? A video of possible enhancements to the ES-14 would be very welcome.

2:47 Speakers with a single low value cap are not performing to their optimum. I would put a 6 MF cap resisted by like 18 ohms in parallel with the existing cap on the tweeter...and a 0.3 uf inductor added in series which the existing inductor on the woofer. Guaranteed to to sound way better.
@Justwantahover
@Justwantahover 3 жыл бұрын
@@edwardbalboa5528 It's not my idea I got the idea from some KEF speakers. The upper med or lower treble sounds better through a tweeter than the woofer. Woofer is too big to reproduce like 2 khz. But a tweeter can do it cos it's light. It's effectively lowering the crossover frequency a bit. Some tweeters are suitable for it and some aren't.

It was almost like someone had a wet blanket over the original. I really was kind of shocked. I really want to add his H Frame subs to go with them but money is a little tight right now. Making a passive better than the active makes no sense at that level of drivers. Why not make the active filter better, if it is off in the 1st place ? How can any 2 way passive on this planet beat proper line activated X 4 amplifiers ? Kind of like how ATC does its top performers at the present time. I'm am sure they will soon be going up a level to digital crossovers with a dac/amp per drive ala Linn or Meridian. Once you are activated properly going back to passive land is always less MUSIC.

@ufarkingicehole
@ufarkingicehole 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmcbarron7282 just my humble opinion... you can make a good many changes by altering the crossover of any speaker. It depends on a ton of factors such as gear being used, what was the driver made from, also what was the design of the said driver? You can change alot but you can only do so much. For example, I really dont like metal drivers and some people who love a little bite cant get enough. I've heard of some designers who managed to get a metal driver to chill out a bit but it seems to me it would have been better to try something different all together. I hope this makes sense. One more thing, I have heard of people designing electronics laid out a certain way as to prevent unwanted frequency disturbances. I suppose that could be another reason to install crossovers separately from the actual cabinets (again size restraints). I'm not sure how much weight this carries but I've heard of it.

This video is a load of bollocking nonsense. Leave those speakers alone ffs! Their designers knew a lot more about audio than you do. You're just on here to sell your product.

If their designers really were that great then we wouldn't be seeing all of the problems with them and having to fix them.

Danny is a snakeoil salesman plain an simple. I mean why buy a speaker in a certain price range (let's say $300) if you are just gonna modify it with one of these kits (average price is about $250). If you want better/different sound just step up to a $500 speaker. I can't believe people still fall for this BS.

Yeah ok buddy. Everything ever made was perfect, and Danny likes to waste all of his time doing this for a joke. Seriously bro, grow up.

@@fcamiola Danny isn't wasting his time Frank. There's serious money to be made from selling 'upgrades'.
