I didn't think Buffalo were considered carp, and after looking at comments and google searches, they're completely different even if they look similar. Buffalo are native fish that live a long time (apparently considered a miracle since they live over 100 years and generally dont show signs of age) and don't reproduce that much so it seems their populations are in decline, though they are marked as having "least concern" according to wikipedia. The Bigmouth Buffalo that were caught in this video only eat plankton so they're usually caught by bow fishing anyway, and I can't seem to find any regulations on them either so I don't think certain comments should be as upset as they are, though it is understandable. I do think it'd be best to at least address that these Buffalo are not carp at all, and not invasive or harmful like european and asian carp are. Everybody makes mistakes, I just think with such a large audience its best to not misinform people and correct the mistake so a bunch of people don't start going out and killing these native species for no reason, thinking they're being helpful.

Agreed. Staunch supporter and follower of Rob for a long time but you should not be bowfishing "buffalo carp" and not eating every last scrap of meat at least. Buffalo ribs are delicous and so is the rest of the fish. Fascinating fish with fascinating biology and the oldest ones have been around since the 1920s. Native too. They should be high on the conservation list. This is a really bad look.

As a fishing guide for many years in norhtern canada a blind taste test of smoked northern pike, walleye and common carp was presented to each incoming group of new fishermen. Hands down the carp was the #1 taste test winner. Much to the surprise of the guests.

Depends on where the carp is from. Since carp eat everything and get pretty big, they're a lot more likely to take in chemicals or other pollutants into their meat. I'm pretty sure carp was originally introduced as a good eating fish, though they obviously became super invasive easily. All I can say is the carp I ate tasted like window cleaner haha.

I have so many great memories of bowfishing in Colorado and Nebraska. First with my recurve, then with a compound. In 1977 my parents bought a lake front house. The lake was filled with carp. My dad used the fish we shot to fertilize his garden and his flower beds. I also would go to Lake Mcconahay in Nebraska and in the spring the carp would come into the shallows where I waded and shot them.

2 things: Buffalo; small mouth, large mouth are not invasive cannot say that enough. Cringes me when people mistaken buffalo for carp when they are both entirely different species. Buffalo are related to the sucker and are NATIVE to North American when the common carp/asian/silver are INVASIVE and are NOT from here. Yes Buffalo they aren’t considered endangered but that doesn’t mean you should just shot them by the hundreds from the waters and label them as invasive. Please know your differences between native and invasive before putting a label on them especially for a person who loves to fish and hunt. Rob the Buffalo, you cooked it the wrong way. Buffalo are better smoked, deep fried or turning into something like fish balls. But it is a must to bleed them so they won’t have that large blood line. Grew up eating Buffalo here in Minnesota and always loved eating them whenever I fish for them.

I caught one of these last year in a Chesapeake bay tributary and thought it was a carp. But another fisherman nearby told me it was a Buffalo - a native fish distinct from carp. So since I’ve want sure what it was exactly, I put it back in the water. Now that I know they can live to be 100 years old, I’m so glad I did and so glad I had a chance encounter with that old soul. This video bugged me big time. I love DMFD (fan since the early days when they did normal/cheap weekend outings) and I’m so happy for their success and family. But two things in this video were a really bad look: 1) taking a species without properly identifying it (this may be shared responsibility with the guide service in ND) 2) the appearance (maybe even reality) of pointing arrows at one another at a minimum sends a poor safety message.

Always been a big fan of this page, but I’m a little surprised by this video as y’all seem to be a bit misinformed. Buffalo are native to the US as part of the sucker family, they aren’t invasive. Their populations have the potential to be put at risk by the influx of Asian carp species which are very much so invasive(silvers, bigheads, grass, basically every carp species but the common which is a naturalized species). Buffalo also reproduce at a slow rate compared to most suckers so they could be put at risk by overfishing. As a bigtime bowfishermen myself we gotta be careful putting out videos like this as it could be used against us when people lobby to have bowfishing be made illegal (i.e. look at how here in Texas you can’t bowfish gator gar on the Trinity river anymore). Also: Buffalo are delicious, you just cooked it completely wrong. Its meant to be smoked or deep fried. My favorite method is to actually take their large rib cages out and fry them. I swear its better than catfish.

Love the channel. I've followed for quite some time. Just not sure how a native species is considered invasive? Nor that a Buffalo is considered a carp. I grew up commercial fishing the Mississippi River in southern Arkansas. I've eaten and sold thousands of pounds of buffalo. I'm open to being wrong I just don't believe I am.

Great lakes charter boat captain here with a passion for trying to make "trash fish" edible. Buffalo is actually not a carp, it is in the minnow family and a close relative to the whitefish. Actually have some on the smoker right now. Buffalo eat crayfish and are a vary fatty fish and need to be salt brine for a few days. Buffalo cooked with the poor man lobster recipe taste just like snow crab. Re try it Rob. Next video "Buffalo redemption" everglades doesn't make everything taste better, work with the meat, not the seasoning

Rob is an ocean fisherman, and it seems he got his information and invite for what he was doing here from the locals, so busting his chops doesn't do much good. Also, if the Department of Natural Resources is saying its invasive, why argue? If there is no regulations against it, he did no wrong. I think its always cool to see him willing to catch, clean and cook something he's never tried, native or not. Doesn't look like any of the others there had any sort of recipe to make it edible.

There is absolutely no way that the DNR there said that buffalo are an invasive species, just, no, they didn't. Perhaps he asked them if "carp" were, without telling them he was talking about "buffalo" carp...but if he asked if buffalo were invasive...they did not say yes.

As a chef myself I feel like its alright to give you a very tiny piece of advice, since u basically do everything really good already so I hope u don't mind, but when u fabricate a fish and ur getting those filet's u usually want to remove the scales by either rubbing a knife from tail to head or use a very clean kitchen rag lightly damp and remove the scales. It will make cutting thru the skin a lot easier with no extra resistance and give u a cleaner looking cut and also reduce work the knife has to do. But regardless keep up the awesome content man love your channel!

In some parts of Asia, carp is a delicacy.. I’m from Southern Ontario 🇨🇦 and up here we don’t usually eat it, however there are obviously some that do. Im a fisherman/bushman and I’ve never tried it in my 30 years of life, but I totally would. We have tons of them in the rivers near my property, but the rivers aren’t the cleanest here and as we know, carp are bottom feeders. Anyways, love the content my brother. Can’t wait to see more catch and cooks

My name is Javier Lopez I live in Carlsbad New Mexico and I fish for carp all the time the only ones I keep to eat are the ones as long or bigger than my arm. The way I prepare them is to wrap them in foil , add some lemon juice and put them in the oven for 2 hours at 225°, and when it's done the bones just stick out. At that point all you have to do is pull the bones out and eat it . The lemon juice helps to cook the fish and in a sense essentially it steams the fish . To me and my family it rivals catfish ,next time add lemon and wrap it in foil and you'll see what I mean.

Hi legend, Chris here from UK. First thing you said on the video, can you eat carp? Born in France , as carps were caught in rivers (100 yards wide) in the middle of France, carps tends to get a muddy taste. The way “old folks “ used to cook carp was either as you would use for meatballs . The obvious next one would be to use it as stuffing…. Thank you for the adventures Chris

My Dad grew up during the Depression. Every day after school he went down to the river and caught frogs and turtles and catfish and other fish. He also shot squirrels and quail and doves but not so many because they couldn't afford ammo. He told me that carp were not good to eat. That's all I ever needed to hear. He said turtle soup was one of the best things he ever tasted. I've never tasted it. I always wanted to though.

Buffalo carp are a native species. But for eating Buffalo crap it is only good to eat them if the water temp is below 55 degrees. In southeast missouri we eat them early spring because of the water temp. But we don’t fillet them like that. We keep all the meat around the ribs and just cook the ribs.

Best way to eat carp is to pressure cook the fillets then freeze. It will crystallize the bones then you can make fish patties and fry.

Carp tastes really good if you know how to cook it. Use ginger, garlic, chill(spice ones), fry all of them, and then put small chunks of carp into the mixture, fry it a little bit, then pour some hot water alone with soy sauce, salt, if you have some chicken broth use it instead of hot water. Boil it for 5 mins, then put some green onion and turn off the stove, the dish is now perfect.
