This is your best work yet, Justin! Getting into saddle hunting can be overwhelming, if you let it. You just helped simplify the process, down to what is really necessary to get going in saddle hunting, and what is not. Thanks for the great info!

This was really great! Thank you for all of your knowledge. I just started looking into it and I really like how you do not pressure anyone into doing your way, or your way of the only way, etc. I hate when I watch things and feel like I need to buy everything the person is doing/showing to make it work. You were able to keep options open for anyone interested while getting the point across. Thank you

I have a ring of steps, but am upgrading to the predator platform, just for comfort. I will also just set up ladders in the woods like I used to do for regular treestand hunting but just put my platform on when I use that tree. I still use hawk climbing sticks to though.

Back when I started bowhunting, too many years ago to admit, I was so poor, I couldn’t pay attention! I used 5” 2X4 blocks with a hole drilled into the “NW” corner. I put a 9mm rope (nothing like today’s ropes). I’d tie a knot on each side of the hole. They’d be about 4-6’ in length, with my block in the middle. I’d just tie them around a tree, use a lineman’s belt, and go as far up a tree as I wanted! I’m not going to tell about my homemade stand , with a car seatbelt, but for the budget guys out there, these blocks were great. They were quiet, and I could have 5 or 6 of them on me and go as high as I needed. Sticks are way better, so save your money, and above all, be safe!!!!

This is amazing info. I love the breakdown you give. You actually sold me on staying with my hang on stands because I don’t need to stay light weight and my stands don’t need to move a bunch. I wish I had a need to try it out because it looks so fun and gives a new wrinkle. I’m better off investing my money into what I’m used to.

Thanks for sharing, I feel like sometimes we get into gear and think we need it all, when the best gear we have is between our ears and people have been hunting with a lot less before we came along. I do agree with the comfort thing though it makes the days in the woods a lot better.

I’m already considering ditching my strap on sticks, leaning towards the simplicity of rope climbing, or SRT, as most of the trees I want to use, are way to big & limb filled, to get the straps around, & climb with the lineman’s rope. On my first year of this method, & love repelling back down the tree, grabbing my platform on my way down, leaving nothing behind.

The ropes should be able to last quite a few years. Seeing as you take them out of the tree after every hunt, they don't get the same wear and tear that a lifeline or a ratchet strap gets on a treestand.

Just a little tip, instead of using a regular bow rope, maybe try out the HSS retractable bow rope. Clip it your bow, clip the other end to your pack and start climbing. It retracts as you climb. Less tangle and you can reel the rope in when your done

@bowhuntordie
@bowhuntordie Жыл бұрын
Hey Chason - we try to avoid saddle hunting out of really large diameter trees if we can avoid it. They're more difficult to see around and maneuver around if you need to get a shot, not to mention the issues with getting ropes around them. If it's too big to reach around and you can't swing a rope, I would look for another tree. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle. When saddle hunting we tend to hunt out of smaller trees. Many folks say a "basketball" size is ideal.

The Tethrd Phantom starter kit includes a saddle and all the ropes/carabiners you need to get started. It's $365. They also have another model available for $305. The Predator XL platform is $190. Lone Wolf Climbing sticks are around $200. Sys Hauler bags are $20/each, backrest is $30, and I'm sure I'm missing a few more accessories. If you're starting from zero plan on spending around $700 on a full setup.

I don't think it's like a traditional safety harness. I just ordered mine so idk yet. A traditional safety harness is made to stop a fall not to sit in. Look it up, people have died from hanging in an actual safety harness too long. It's like 20-30 minutes that can kill you from cutting off blood flow, etc...

Saddle hunting sucks. It's a waste of money and time. It makes hunting horrible and unenjoyable. You have too many things to handle when climbing. Sitting is a nightmare and killing your legs. Maneuver and moving are difficult. Shooting is more challenging when you have the bridge and the tether in front of you. Lots of time you only have a few seconds to shoot, and this hunting style is too slow to take a shot.
