I think attribution of the 'toxic' aspect to Bowie's Thin White Duke character, was probably the narrator's tactful way of referring to Bowie's persona itself; given he was going through his coke-addled, pompous, superiority-complexed, flirtation with nazi ideology stage.

Bowie had his highs and lows and kept charging on. I think he took the bad and used that to pivot on and incorporate it into his music. I get more out of the instrumentals on Low than any piece of music I ever heard. Pure masterpiece. Just marvelous, you feel the pain and isolation, desperation. Just an remarkable artist who is my favorite artist.

The interviewer makes a rookie mistake by posing two questions at once. It appears the interviewer doesn't know that content is king. "Does it all come to you the night before?" I mean how likely is it that Bowie is just freestyling and making it up as he goes along? The fact that Bowie explains these basic facts as if he was talking to a child is hilarious and impressive.

I like to imagine myself being paid at work not just for my skills, but also to be who they want me to be. at this point he'd started trying to get off the marching powder but not totally. when he made The Man Who Fell To Earth he actually started to while filming and raising his son. Although he'd have more stints with cocaine, he totally stopped for a long time after moving to Berlin with Iggy Pop. You could tell because he didn't look so elegantly wasted later on.

What a weird question to ask. Of course it doesn't come to him the night before. How can you built a stage and a atmosphere and a scene you've come up with less than 24 hours ago. And of course somebody like Bowie doesn't "improvise" unless it's nessecairy and involves small addaptations (fi because the lights fall out or something like that.). Tiresome to always have to take such questions seriously.
