So really, to make more sense to bowlers, balls should be classified as Early Reaction vs. Later Reaction. Solids skid less, react to the lane early and layoff in the back. Pearls skid more, react to the lane late and are more aggressive in the back.

The easiest way to sum up the difference is if you want to control front to back: pick a solid. If you’re looking to get through the heads and control side to side: pearl.
@drwisdom1

I view the difference between solid and pearl bowling balls is pearl balls go longer before hooking. Bigger bowlers who really juice up the ball can use either type. But smaller bowlers like myself have to go with pearl balls because solid balls lose too much power and are weak by the time they get to the pocket.

I think the comparison would be better between the same ball in terms of the name like redemption solid and redemption Pearl or idol solid and idol pearl. Bc they have the same cores as each other but the only thing that makes it different is the cover. That would show a more true reading in difference

Some manufacturers use the same core, but their cover stock has these differences to make more models, despite the "skin" being the only difference

Sometimes when league is on a burnt up pattern my black widow pearl acts like your redemption solid does here - sees the friction really early and doesn't make it through the pins. It's wild that to hook more, I gotta go even weaker. I've got a symmetrical pearl for this scenario and it works really well (c300 power drive). a good summary is: if your aggressive ball isn't hooking, don't go more aggressive, maybe instead go less. If your weak ball is overhooking, you can go stronger, it'll read early and gradually hook. counter intuitive, eh?

That makes.. perfect sense. I am still using house balls and I've noticed the faster I throw, the more it acts like a spare ball. I think it comes down to Rev vs Speed?
@cybersteel8
@cybersteel8 2 жыл бұрын
@@farvezafridifaizurrahman6980 Revs and speed definitely play into it. More speed generally means less hook (at same revs). More revs generally means more hook (at same speed). I think that basically got to do with how many rotations the ball makes in the 40 or so feet of oil. More rotations on the lane means more hook. Generally. House balls hook better when you bowl slow and spin the heck out of it. If you launch it down the lane, you definitely won't get much hook, because the amount of rotations the ball makes in total is less, since the ball spends less time going down the lane. Slow it down, give it the RPM you want, and it'll hook. If you want to spare with it, and you have a hard time not spinning the ball, then bowl faster and you'll get less hook on it. So yes, you're right. This video by JR highlights that ball "hook" or motion isn't necessarily represented by side-to-side motion, but actually front-to-back. If a ball is hooking earlier, which solid covers are supposed to do, the total amount of hook is dragged out over the length of the lane and overall you won't get a lot of side-to-side hook. A ball the hooks late, that can skid through the whole front and mid parts of the lane, like Pearl balls are supposed to do, hook way more downlane because they haven't started hooking yet when they reach the friction. So they explode all their hook power in a short distance, resulting in a lot of side-to-side hook. So if a ball hooks early, it's a more gradual line, but if it hooks late, it'll be sharper. It's why my aggressive balls look so bad when the lanes are burnt up dry; they're hooking super early and have no steam by the time they get to the friction. I've got a weaker ball that hooks like a beast for this scenario because it keeps it all for the back-end and releases it all then. Front-to-back motion is really the key thing to look for.

A lot of people assume the "strongest" cover equals the most hook. At my home center the amount of friction on the panels burns up most of the big cover bowling balls. Granted low rev speed dominant players sometimes do need the surface. But I will almost never have a top tier performance ball in my hand.
@chrisstrong3748
@chrisstrong3748 3 жыл бұрын
It makes more sense when you describe it front to back. Obviously some balls do have more motion left to right, but a stronger ball hooks sooner, and a weaker ball hooks later. If there's heavy oil, a stronger ball will shape more like what people expect and a weaker ball may hook very little or just fly by where it normally would hook in League. For most house shots, a "strong" ball or a ball with a lot of surface will hook earlier and then roll straighter toward the pocket, where you will find a weaker ball travels farther and then hooks back more dramatically to the pocket, depending on the core and rev rate of course.

@@cuanedwards1911 That's completely dependent on the house and the pattern that they use. On the regular house shot where I bowl, I start out with pearl still because of how the lanes play and because I'm rev dominant. Someone who is speed dominant would probably do better with a stronger solid.

I'm contemplating getting an Axiom to replace my Hyroad Nano. I've got speed but somewhat lower revs, I tend to line up over 2nd arrow and curve into the pocket. With solid, pearl, and surface to think about, I'm now sure which to get, the Axiom or Axiom pearl.
@chrisstrong3748
@chrisstrong3748 3 жыл бұрын
@@m.cerullo3473 If you like the nano coverstocks, the Axiom is great. I don't really know anything about the Hyroad Nano, but I played the same part of the lane at 18-19mph, about a 250-275 rev rate and the Axiom (pin up) worked pretty well for me. I consistently got it to the pocket, just sometimes needed to change a finger position if I started leaving a 10 pin. I'm a 155 average bowler. First game I bowled in my home alley after I got it was a 243! It can have a pretty hook set reaction if you throw with a low axis tilt and a lot of axis rotation, or it can walk itself right over to the pocket if you lay it down and come up the back a bit more. Really versatile, but a lot straighter and smoother off the backend than my other 2 balls. Once i started slowing my speed down to 16mph, I started needing more length and could finally throw an asym ball (usually threw too fast for them to rev up and do what they do). So now I typically start with a pin down Nuclear Cell, and get the Axiom out if it's moving on the backend too much (read is around the same spot in the mid-lane, but the Nuke continues arcing closer to the pins and jumps left if there's a dry spot, where the Axiom goes a lot straighter to the pocket and ignores any extra stuff in front of the pins). I also have a Trend that i absolutely love. Comes back from anywhere on the lane i want to throw it, gives me miss room left and right, and if i throw with more axis rotation it can shape like the Nuke on the backend or if I come up the back more it can walk in like the Axiom if I've burned a bit of a track for it. Really versatile for me. I can't always throw it first game, but it's the most fun of the 3 I have. I know that's a lot of information that's probably irrelevant, but that's my experience with it and I hope it helps paint a picture of what it does and where it might fit.

this video has the potential to be horribly misleading. Looking at coverstock designator as a hard fast identifier of what motion you're gonna see is a baaad idea. Here are a hand full of examples of pearl bowling balls that have smooth, controlled moves at the break point: Idol Pearl, Marvel Pearl, Omega Crux, Cold Blood, original motiv Jackal. As far as solids that are very dynamic off of friction...I can't think of many off hand but the one that comes to mind is the Rubicon. Shopping blindly based on cover designator is a HORRIBLE idea. If someone wants something super clean and angular and decides to buy an omega crux or idol pearl, they're gonna be disappointed. You need to take in the big picture and MOST IMPORTANTLY use your eyes....watching the ball go down the lane is the best way to see what the ball is going to do. If someone thinks "I want a pearl ball because of the fast friction response" then watches an hours worth of omega crux videos, they'll realize that it's not the ball for them.

The Redemption was pretty shiny too so 1. At board 20 both balls did exactly the same motion. and 2. i think the difference with the Aero, was due to the shots already played which started creating a path, of the core, or some minor difference on the execution. But of course that does not change the take-away of the video which is correct and shows the difference of the 2 covers.

Shinyness doesn't matter. You can polish up a solid ball for a bit more length, but it still lacks the mica in the pearl coverstock that provides the skid snap motion
@bowlingxp8345
@bowlingxp8345 2 жыл бұрын
@@iceman5117 The absence or not of mica, does not make shinyness irrelevant. Mica provides tha snap motion, not the skid part. The skid part is provided by shinnyness. Also, if shinyness didn't matter , then we would all have polished balls because they look cooler :P Also if i polish a solid ball, it can easily shoot past the breakpoint, so no one can say that surface grit doesn't matter. It's physics. If you take a pearl and bring it down to 1500 (or less), you will not see much (or any) skid/snap even though it has mica.
@iceman5117
@iceman5117 2 жыл бұрын
@@bowlingxp8345 You can't have snap without skid. The mica in a pearl coverstock creates a different surface texture and pore size from solid resin that prevents that ball for hooking up until the dry tail end of the lane. @@iceman5117 I never said "you can have snap without skid" , that would be silly. Also i never said we can get 100% the exact motion of a solid with a pearl. (even though a chemical engineer you might be aware of, Roland Hickland who worked for Ebonite, seems to disagree with your statement...). I only said the surface grit matters, and it matters a lot, regardless of cover type. And if your statement is 100% correct, then how do you explain that even in this video, when both balls crossed 20 at the arrows, had the same breakpoint, and the same ball motion (AND result) ? I think you can get quite close to a similar ball motion with 2 balls with same core, same basic cover formula, and one being the pearl version and the other one bring the solid. In fact i had 2 balls like these, and the closer their grit was , the closer their ball motion was. Back then i wasn't into details like that so i never paid too much attention to them. Unfortunately i didn't get the chance to test it properly as one cracked and i gave away the other one.

All the books numbers whatever also tell you what the Recommended lane condition for any given ball is the Redemption Solid is a good ball of the balls I own it is my current favorite ball. However it is a ball designed for heavy and longer oil patterns. Flor probably 95 percent of the bowlers that use the Redemption solid it is not going to be the right ball on a beat up house shot. If won't even be the right choice on a lot of standard fresh house shots. On the other hand 95 percent of the bowlers that use it on a fresh heavy volume sport shot will love the punch it provides. All that being said the bowlers personal style is also a huge factor. I love the Redemption solid at least on a fresh house shot with a high oil volume. It fits my personal bowling style well. But it needs oil, and it doesn't fit all bowling styles. Yes Bill O'Neal won a major with it made look good on the Wayne Webb pattern. That was part of the reason I bought it. But the pros can make any ball look good. Anyway Redemption Solid is a good ball for a lot of bowlers but not for every bowler. Happy bowling you all🎳

I thought about getting a pink widow, but it seems most are already sold out of it. If I find one I'll probably grab it up if the price isn't ridiculous.

@@bworm7152 yeah guess I’m not sure if it’s still in current catalogs. Otherwise talk to local pro shop operator to see about their distributors inventory. Company that my center buys from (Bobs Business, Red Wing MN) currently has a TON of recently discontinued rocks for discounted prices. High end stuff for less than 150 drilled

So question is should I use my pearl storm axiom when its dry cause it is hard to keep it on the lane

If even our pearl ball is very hard to keep on the lane, then you need a weaker pearl, or a urethane, or more speed, or less axis rotation. Or a solid ball that hooks then goes straight.

Get a weaker pearl ball like a rhino. Always remember to take care of the surface of the ball as well.

Or I could just get me a decent no gimmick bowling ball and get good with it, saving me tons of $$$
