Bowling balls apparently used to be made of wood. Back in the 1800s. So I found one. And I bowled with it. Ok. Cool.

Totally crazy fun! Great video. A little history: The Great Ed Lubanski used a two fingered ball his whole career. He shot back to back 300's on TV with that two fingered rubber ball. Ned Day also used a two fingered rubber ball for most of his career. He shot over 70 300 games. Ned Day was one of the first to innovate using three holes in a ball. It was called the "Ned Day grip"

That one is in pretty good shape, all those old wood balls just had two holes. A bunch of bowling alleys in Wisconsin have one or two in cases. Have seen them growing up. Never saw someone throw one, to be honest they are not usually in that shape.

The holes are for the thumb and middle finger. This was standard up until the 1930s, so you can find rubber balls drilled that way too.

Evolution. Our forefathers in the early days of bowling hadn't yet mutated to have more than one finger and thumb.... Or maybe they lost their extra fingers in tragic logging accidents gathering all the wood to make balls.

They're heavier than you would think. I have a lignum vitae two hole ball that weighs 13lb 6oz. I've set up pins in my shop and rolled it at them on a short lane. Don't think I would risk it on a regulation lane though. Span and holes are pretty perfect for my hand.

I don't think it's a replica, but likely just something from the time when they were being phased out in favor of rubber balls (early 1900s). This probably belonged to a ball company employee or just someone who takes care of things. It's in excellent shape for sure.
