Alex Bowman snapped an 80-race winless streak by conquering the Chicago Street Course. He held off a furious charge from Tyler Reddick, who hit the wall on the last lap while trying to run down Bowman.
Bowman used a late-race strategy call to stay on wet weather tires as the track began to dry and did just enough to hold off Redick and Joey Hand in the closing laps and secured a spot in the 2024 Cup Series playoffs. Speaking of Reddick, he explains what went wrong on the final lap as he tried to catch Bowman for what could've been a photo finish at Chicago.
While Bowman celebrated a big win, two of the pre-race favorites, Kyle Larson and Shane van Gisbergen, recorded DNFs with early crashes. SVG got wiped out by Chase Briscoe, who lost control in the pouring rain, which sent van Gisbergen's Chevy into the wall. Larson fared marginally better, but his day ended early when he cooked the brakes on a wet track and plowed into the tire barrier head-on.
AJ Allmendinger's struggles continued, too. Once a favorite on every road course, Allmendinger limped home to finish 37th. He was in position for a solid finish but a pit road penalty took him out of contention and it was a disappointing result for the Dinger and Kaulig Racing. #NASCAR
