Box Tree Moths & Caterpillars - You Have Beaten Me! 🐛😡

Well today is a very sad day for my garden because I am admitting defeat against the Box Tree Moths and the Box Tree Caterpillars after battling with them for the past 4 years.
According to the RHS website, the Box Tree Moths arrived in the UK from Asia around 2007, but it wasn't until 2011 that they started appearing in private gardens. The RHS have an online survey so if you spot these in your UK gardens, you should record it, so they can track and trace it all. If you take a look on their map, you will see that London and the Home Counties (the areas surrounding London) have been the worst hit and as I am in Essex, I am right slap bang in the middle of it all.
So as I said, I have spent the past 4 years putting out the traps and religiously filling them twice a year with the Solabiol pheromone solution (to catch the male moth before he finds his female), and also spraying the Boxwoods themselves with XenTari, a solution which kills the caterpillar.
I worked out how much this is all costing me and it comes to £100 per year (for my front and back gardens). I've already spent £400 (4 years x £100) and if I want to keep these Boxwoods for another 10 years ... well, that is going to cost me an incredible £1,000!
And even though I am spraying and doing all these things, it's still not working. The caterpillars are still chewing happily through my Boxwoods (Buxus) and it has all just become such a stressful experience.
So I have decided enough is enough. And today I am digging up and tossing 20 Boxwoods in my back garden. I don't yet know if I will find replacements (such as Japanese Holly - Ilex Crenata) and replicate the design I have already, or whether I will now completely redo this area with something different.
All I know for sure is that, and I am sad to have to say this, but I will never plant another Boxwood in my garden. I will be removing all the Boxwoods from my front garden another time.

This breaks my heart Janette, you know how much I love boxwoods here in the US, I was already heartbroken before even watching the video and just reading the title... Richard is right, you can buy more plants... Maybe something on that wall like a seating area/bench with something crawling up the wall... I know whatever you make will look gorgeous, while this is a sad day, it is also a great opportunity to do something new in the space.

That was a lot of work for you but you're so right about enjoying the garden and not becoming a slave to it. I was thinking heucheras or maybe hostas (except the slugs and hostas,😝!) Hi Janette! Myself and another Cambridge student have just conducted some groundbreaking research on the box moth and we have found this video incredibly insightful! It's so enlightening to see not only the physical, but also emotional damage this unassuming moth can have...utterly devastating. We would love for you to have a read and we find your passion for gardening incredibly inspiring. Tierney and Finlay.

I would love to read your research and my email address is j.jensen1@sky.com This video was a few years ago now and I have vowed not to plant boxwoods ever again, but I have had so many comments and chats with other gardeners who have experienced this pain, and it is now spreading further around the UK and has reached parts of the USA and Canada too. Would love to hear from you both. Best wishes and thanks for getting in touch. Have a great week 🩷❤️💚

So sad to see that :( but we can also see the toll it was taking on you to do this maintenance. My case is quite different , I bought a house with a lot of dead boxwoods hoping that some of them were alive. Some of them are but now learning about this pest and other fungus I can see they have (the reddish one that looks like burned) and the yellow spot one plus this moth is making me reconsider :( I have also the euonymus japonicus and they are happy and growing... maybe I propagate them instead. Its sad... boxwood are so beatiful... anyway thanks for the video and sorry for your temporary defeat. Best wishes

Sorry to hear this, Janette, you battled hard but think you are right if something is causing extra hard work and stress to get rid of it, not to mention the cost! I got a couple of pittosporum golf ball last year which could be used in this way, they are lovely, they are a brighter green than box, not sure about the shade thought as mine have full sun. Alexandra from the middle sized garden has a good video on her channel about alternatives to box if you haven’t seen it already. She’s in Kent so think her area will be affected by the naughty caterpillars too. I am sure whatever you decide to do will be beautiful and it’s a project to focus on. X

Hi Janette. I have several large box plants which I have clipped and shaped over the years. I am gradually getting rid of them for the same reason you did and they will all be gone by next spring. Luckily I have various plants and shrubs which I can divide and take cuttings from to fill the new gaps, so it won’t cost me anything. My garden will therefore get a mini makeover and I won’t have to spend any more money on that spray - win win. 👍

Hi there GF, I’m so sorry you have suffered with this too! I have been getting lots of comments on this video recently which means that so many more people are looking it up because they are now experiencing it too. But I will say that I have no regrets of pulling all mine out, it was just stressing me out all the time, plus costing time and money, and gardening is meant to be fun, so I’m glad mine are gone and I don’t have to think of it any longer, and I’m sure you’ll feel relieved too 🩷

But, the good news is I have since discovered many different plants that have exactly the same appearance without any threat of pests or diseases so I’ve been planting those instead. So all is good but thank you for your kind comments. Unfortunately, since this video (which was almost 2 years ago) these boxtree moths have spread over most of the UK and are now in some parts of the US and Canada. Isn’t that dreadful? Especially when people spend years pruning them into all sorts of beautiful shapes. I feel so much better now mine are all gone (I took out the ones I had in the front garden too) as it was becoming so stressful trying to fight them when gardening is meant to be peaceful and calming 😆 again, thank you, and I hope you’re having a great day 🩷

They also said you don’t have to spray every 3 months but only when you see the caterpillars. So I just wanted to let you all know that I had been spraying far more than necessary. Hi there, today I’ve learnt of the pesky box tree caterpillar which has led to me to your videos Janette. I’m so sad as I have 6 large box tree cubes which I’ve had for 15years and they’ve grown substantially. Today I realised that they were t just dehydrated but have been attacked by caterpillars. My gardener friend has advised me to remove them as I wouldn’t stand a chance of repairing with treatments. I’m in Warwickshire and have filled in the RHS survey.
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no Cathy I’m so sorry to hear this. I don’t want to tell you to take yours out, you’ve had them for such a long time. I know how you feel, and in my front garden (not in this particular video) I had to remove a whole row I’d had for maybe 10 years that I’d lovingly trained from little balls into a curved hedge. Very sad about that. But … now they are gone I’m so pleased I don’t have to constantly put traps out and spend money on spraying all the time. Do try everything before you pull them out, pick off the caterpillars or jet spray them with water. So annoying. Thanks for commenting though and do tell me how you get on. 😍😍
@Doves96
@Doves96 11 ай бұрын
The Jet spraying Idea is actually a very good one. It removed all the webbing and gives the Box a chance to breathe. I think the real trick is to stop them over wintering somehow. Do you think jet washing in the winter may kill the eggs or whatever they over winter in? This reminds me of that horrible leaf miner moth that's killing our horse chestnuts as well. I HATE them :(@@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener 11 ай бұрын
Yes I think jet spraying will kill the eggs because they won’t be on their food source any more. You’re right, get them and make sure they can’t overwinter. I read they have 4 life cycles between March and October and then overwinter while it’s cold. I have faith in you!! 🩷

Hi there Vaishali and I’ve just replied to a few more people who very recently watched this video because they are now experiencing this too, they’ve reached the US and Canada too! Well, I’m very sorry you have this problem too. All I can say is I have no regrets in taking mine out and have since found lots of lovely plants which look so similar (Ilex Crenata and lots of Euonymus to name 2) and pest free. I was getting so stressed with mine and it was costing me time and money and gardening is meant to be fun! The moths have 3 or 4 life cycles every year and the eggs and caterpillars can even overwinter as well, so I don’t want to be the person responsible for telling you to take yours out, but it seems from all the conversations im having that people are trying so hard to combat the problem and it is extremely difficult to do it. Do let me know what you decide 🩷

Hi Janette I'm sorry about the loss of your beloved boxwoods. I recently got a Serena hydrangea, it only gets about 15 inches tall x 15 inches wide. We're in West Sussex and they arrived late summer 2022. Have tried an early spring spray, plus removed the tips with obvious webbed leaves. But it's not something I want to do regularly, so will have to probably replace it. It looks like this invader is here to stay. In Asia it is apparently kept in check by the Asian Hornet - which is just about the scariest insect on the planet (after giant centipedes perhaps)

I have vowed never to plant boxwoods again because of all the problems I had, and I really did go to great lengths to try and keep them in check, but at the end of the day my boxwoods were becoming a stress, instead of being something to enjoy in the garden, so they all came out. Fortunately there are lots of alternatives which look similar such as ilex. Such a shame though so good luck with yours. Oh and I googled the nasty Asian Hornets 🐝!! 😡

I live in Wales where we have very low levels of box tree moth infestations. I have a lovely mature parterre box bush scheme, and I am dreading the inevitable arrival of these pests. It's sadly just a matter of time 🙁 When it does happen I will have to remove it all as I won't use the volume of pesticide needed (as you described in the video) to try and keep the pests under control. Between the box moth and box blight, it's really becoming too labour intensive and costly to use box in gardens 😞

I know Monty removed all his because of blight, and I ended up taking out mine in the front, which I’d had for years and had shaped into a lovely curved hedge because of blight. Maybe it won’t get to you in Wales … I have my fingers doubled crossed 🤞 for you. 😍
