Күн бұрын

Today I am transplanting the contents of lots of my Spring containers out into a new space I’ve created in the garden, after removing a huge mound of Lamium.
But before that, I’d filmed an update every day last week which I thought I’d put into a video montage to share with you all:
Sun - rain
Mon - clearing the Lamium
Tues - dealing with a wasps nest
Weds - repurposing tomato canes
Thurs - ‘Santana’ Rose revival
Fri - Physocarpus ‘Magic Ball’
Sat - Pondwatch!
The plants I am transplanting from the containers are:
Carex ‘Morrowii Ice Dance’
Anemones
Heuchera
Heather
Ivy
Brunnera
Acorus Ogon
Hakonechloa
If you’d like to join my Facebook page, also called The Enthusiastic Gardener, you can find it by clicking this link:

Hi Janette, trust you and Richard are well. I really enjoyed your quick fired clips , easier for you and an interesting change from your usual single take video. I'm impressed by your editing skills, especially the music interludes. You made me smile a few times , you are a natural comedian in a quiet way. Your garden looks lovely, your plant moves are creative and bold. We visited the RHS flower show at Tatton on Friday, we loved it. The sun helped, the tent flower displays were brilliant. During the day we enjoyed the live music, the various stalls and even listened to a talk on flower arranging! Impressed? Well we only sat in the talk to escape the sun but ended up enjoying the guest speaker on flower arranging! We bought a woven willow plant which needs planting still. Our new drive is complete now so replanting etc almost done. Enjoy the rest of the week. YEITN Steve

Your new plantings all look great and the pond is a beautiful addition with or without frogs. Beautiful looking garden and great planting the empty space it looks beautiful. The weather over here in Ireland is the same as you with plenty of rain and highs of 20 degrees celsius. Hi Janette. Great video. The garden looks great. So sorry you were stung by a wasp. I have large flower pots with evergreens flanking my front door and this year a wasp called a yellow jacket (they make nests in the ground) decided to make a nest in one of my pots. We have some painters working on the outside of the house near the pots and they sprayed a bug killer and water on them. I hope no one got stung. I hope your wasp problem goes away too. Take care!

Hi Janette, I was a little late watching this week, as we are on holiday and I couldn't get a signal (only in Ireland). I once had wasps in my compost bin, one of those black bins with a lid. I opened the lid and sprayed fly and wasp killer in. The wasps were not at all happy and chased me to the back door. Luckily I got in the house before they got to me, but I was so frightened!! The black sprayed bamboo looks great, as does the climbing rose. Nice to have a free space to plant up. I like the Hydrangeas at the back too. Just along to the left you have a lovely orange heuchera, I don't suppose you know the name? Love the new magic ball plant. 😊 Anyway so glad to have caught up with this video. The whole garden is amazing and full of colour and interest. 😊😊😊

Hi Pauline and I hope you’re having a lovely holiday in Ireland 🇮🇪 well I do know the name of the orange Heuchera, it’s called Marmalade and that is one of the best ones I have because it’s been in the longest of most of them and its still looking like one of the best I have, so highly recommended. And the new Ninebark is lovely isn’t it? I was wondering whether if I got bins with lids for my compost it would keep the wasps out, but reading your message it seems the answer to that is probably no, if you had them in yours. I think I might abandon the idea of trying to make compost. I’m still trying to decide. Anyway, I guess there are worse problems to have 😂 have a lovely rest of the week and thanks for watching on your holiday 👍😎🧡😊

Good morning Janette What an eventful week. There are always incidents and surprises in gardening. Your garden is spectacular. I love the rose( forgot it's name😢) and the new ninebark. I'll be at the garden centre today looking for it. Yes,I too pay for green waste collection. We have a Permit sticker on the bin and it's collected every fortnight. A necessity for us with a full garden. That wasp attack was awful. Hope the stings are healing. Sunshine today,lucky us🍰☕🍩💞💯

Hi Sharon, yes we have a permit system here too with fortnightly collections, used to be free (or in with our Council Tax) until 2 years ago. Hope you find the Magic Ball Ninebark, it really is lovely. I hadn’t been stung by wasps since I was a kid so forgot how it hurts!! Yes, always incidents abc surprises in gardens 😊 have a lovely week and enjoy your plant shopping today 🧡😊

Oh my! Had no idea you had such cool temps this time of year. That’s a bit cool for me but right now it would feel wonderful! lol I just went for a visit to celebrate my daughter’s 40th bday in North Carolina mountains…cooler temps…highs in mid 80’s…(that’s probably hot for you. lol)Love the new garden area! What a great idea for your curved bamboo stakes! I have some of those. I’m going to give it a try. Janette, you need to go for a frog walkabout with a jar & bring a couple of frogs home. lol Hope your wasps have “bit the dust” so we say here. Ouch! Hugs from US (GA)❤

Hello there Lindy, it’s normally hotter by now here but it’s been weird weather this year. Here in the UK it’s illegal to take wild frogs from their natural habitat, they’re protected, so that’s not an option. But you can buy tadpoles from a place I’ve found in Scotland (they breed them there) so I have that to fall back on. Unfortunately I missed the ‘tadpole buying’ season this spring and they were all sold out. Glad you’re going to do the bamboo stakes idea, I think they look really nice black, a bit like wrought iron. Happy Birthday too to your daughter! Take care and have a happy week 😊🧡

@@TheEnthusiasticGardenerI didn’t know that law there about frogs. I guess we have so many around here, living by a lake, that I can’t imagine not having a few frogs around. Exotic frogs are sold here in pet stores but just your everyday brown toads are pretty much everywhere. I don’t think it’s against the law here because there’s men that go froggin (like fishing) around lakes & rivers & take them home & fry the frog legs to eat. 😮

Hi Janette as usual your garden looks lovely so colourful, I also have a star jasmine I am thinking of repotting but can't remember is it multipurpose or ericaceous compost to use also what do you feed yours? I also have a little climbing arch shape structure similar to what you have it was with a rose when I bought it so great idea thanks😀

@TheEnthusiasticGardener Ай бұрын
Hi Chris, I just used what I had which was normal multipurpose compost, but I’ve just googled and it says they prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil (mine is more alkaline) so we’d better not add anything acidic. Glad to have given you an idea for planting yours in your arch structure. Have a wonderful week 🧡😊

Hi Janette, if you ever have a wasp problem again there is a spray foam that's sold at hardware stores it comes out like canned whip cream. Spray the nest at night when they're at home for the night and in the morning they'll be in wasp heaven. It also works on yellow jackets. Disregard the sizing on the Ninebark tag, we have 2. One is supposed to get 3 ft. tall and it's 6 ft. tall and the other is supposed to get 5 ft. tall and it's 12 ft. tall. The flowers are beautiful in the spring and even the spent flowers look nice, we leave them on until fall. I have a video short on my channel if you want to see what the flowers look like. I finally knew the music you played : Putting on the Ritz. We finally had a break in the weather yesterday 80° F , but it was pouring rain. It supposed to be in the mid 90's again most of this week. Frog Watch 2024 continues 🐸. When they arrive I think I'll be as excited as you will be.

Good morning to you! I will definitely have a look at your Ninebark and I did think where I’ve put it is not going to be suitable if it gets big. I was kind of comparing it to my other Ninebark which I have had for a few years and never gets much bigger than 2 foot but of course that’s a different variety. Thanks for the wasp treatment idea, I think I will get something, always handy to have just in case so I’ll do that. Oh yes, Putting On The Ritz it is 🎶 and thanks for sharing my 🐸 enthusiasm 😂 Hope you have a wonderful eeek 😊🧡

Hi. Just a thought, couldn’t you use your green wheelie bin as a compost bin? The wasps won’t be able to get in that because of the lid. I’m always sad when I see my neighbours green bins getting collected when they could be putting all the nutrients back into their gardens. I use a large dalek type compost bin for kitchen and garden waste. It’s so full of hungry worms that anything I put in gets broken down so fast, it always amazes me.
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener Ай бұрын
Hi Kerry it probably doesn’t look like it but those 3 bags are so full that I’d only get a small bit of one of them in my green bin. But I think I’ll do what you’ve done and buy 3 dalek ones (good description, I know exactly what you mean). I see them all the time on Facebook Marketplace really cheap. Thanks for your idea though. Have a happy day 🧡😊
@kerryfirehorse
@kerryfirehorse Ай бұрын
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener Yes! I got my large Dalek bin off marketplace for a fiver. Once the compost process is happening well, and if it’s in the sun, it breaks down so fast. I fill it up to the brim and squash the lid down, and within a week or 2, it’s less than half full again. I’ve been packing stuff in for 3 years, plain cardboard boxes and all, and it’s still not full. I have taken some compost out the bottom, but not a lot. It’s very rich compared to shop bought.

@debwatts2035 Hello there Deb and thank you for watching. Yes, the larger ones which are whiter are called Sterling Silver - so gorgeous in the Spring with the frothy blue flowers. They are bigger only because I’ve had them longer. I think the smaller ones will get the same size eventually. The ones I planted today are Jack Frost and Looking Glass (no idea which is which!) but I cannot remember what the other smaller ones are now! If I had to choose my favourites then I’d go for the Sterling Silver because I know they do so well, but I suspect that any variety is going to be lovely. They do like the shade though so don’t plant them in full sun. Hope that helps and have a lovely week 😊🧡
