People can say what they want, but I think Boxcar Willie does the best version of this song. I have always remembered his train whistle and always amazed at how he can make that sound with his mouth.

You know, Boxcar Willie never truly existed. He was a completely invented persona made up by Lecile Travis Martin for a talent show. This guy never hoboed, rode the rails, or did any such thing. He put on a few shows while serving in the USAF, chose the name Boxcar Willie, and rode Slim Whitman's coattails in that wave of low-budget, small label, TV commercial albums that sold by the millions back in the '70's and '80's. He got lucky by being one of the first to open his own place in Branson, MO, and died wealthy with a string of restaurants and hotels. FWIW, that info on the Slim Whitman commercials (he had "more number one hits than anyone, even Elvis, or the Beatles") was true. He did have more number one hits than Elvis or the Beatles-but only on the Canadian C&W charts!

+Nyquilcoma Today Larry martin and myself are going to visit Boxcar,s grave. he died 17 years ago today April 12th 1999. Boxcar Willie was far from being one of the first to have a theater here in Branson Mo. people love the Hobo gimmick he made up and still do !!! he made folks smile...

My uncle used to have one of those tv commercial albums loved Wabash Cannonball and You are My Sunshine and Where have you been Billy Boy on that cassette actually his was a cassette tape. Boxcar Willie may be a made up persona but I enjoyed the music he sang and the way he sang it greatly...OH also love his rendition of Bob Wills -San Antonio Rose, so good.

You missed some very impotant facts...... he grew up beside the railroad tracks on a property owened by the railroad because his father worked on the railroad. He allways loved trains and never hid the fact that his Hobo persona was fictional. He was a very talented entertainer and story teller who was not fairly regognized in his own Country until very late in his career. I have a documentory of his life on my channel called BOXCAR WILLIE ( Gone But Not Forgoten) which is loaded with facts from Box himself.
