8 submissions from a former world champion in 6 minutes isn't actually that bad to be honest lol The thing I found interesting was that you could see the old boxer in Tony pivot himself into good striking positions using his incredible footwork. I think in a real fight situation, he would be very useful as he has got all the balance for good short sharp punches that would still drop people.

As a BJJ black belt, I recommend the opposite approach. I found my beginning in the sport, which was a no-gi to gi path, very advantages. I started jiu jitsu so that I could fight in mma but after a few fights I gravitated more towards jiu jitsu and felt that almost everything you can do in no-go translates well into gi smoother than the reverse. In other words, people who start in a gi are at a disadvantage to those who take the reverse approach, and in my humble opinion, it comes down to grips and pace.
@jc-pe6ue
@jc-pe6ue Жыл бұрын
I would have to disagree, simply because I can do everything wearing a gi that you can do in nogi but not the other way around so usually when a nogi guy puts a gi on he drowns quicker than the other way around
@mullm5375
@mullm5375 Жыл бұрын
I have been fighting in mma, training and competing in BJJ since 2005 and my experience is the opposite, gi guys hit the wall when the gi comes off because they are so dependent on it. I can admit that when I made the switch to gi I found it frustrating how slow it was and how easy it was for my opponents to hinder my pace but again all my no gi attacks worked but when the gi came off gi guys have more difficulty dealing with the pace and lack of grips. All that said I think there is a benefit to training both but personally I would focus on no gi.
@LeWafelaar
@LeWafelaar Жыл бұрын
BJJ and MMA legend Ryan Hall agrees with you @mullm5375 He claims that starting in gi will tend to make people very "grippy" so they don't learn proper weight distribution and body mechanics to control their opponent.
@mullm5375
@mullm5375 Жыл бұрын
@LeWafelaar Yeah, I know that a lot of guys who were introduced to the sport in a gi don't like that bitter reality, but it's just how I and many other successful grapplers see it. The gi is holding people back as far as I'm concerned.

If you continue with no gi, I recommend picking closed guard as your guard of choice, 1 loose pass and 1 smash pass technique and the head and arm choke from side control/mount and triangle from closed guard. Closed guard is easy to enter into and the triangle is the easiest submission to land from closed guard. Then once you're passed i find the head and arm choke to be a good beginner submission as it teaches you to separate the arms from the body.

My grandfather was a capable and somewhat known wrestler during the third Reich in Germany. They used to pit wrestlers like him against boxers. He always used to say that wrestlers would wipe the floor with boxers if they didn't knock them out before the takedown. A point worth noting is that boxers had a different stance back then which helped them react somewhat better against takedowns.

Ellis fed you kimuras several times in mount, you should try to go for more arm kimuras and americanas from the bottom if you can sit up, they're almost an instant tap because let's face it, nobody wants their arm snapped and kimuras are so effective. I'm the opposite of you, I have been training for less time but I have only done no-gi, and I'm waiting to expand into Gi training, However, I do feel that Gi is harder to get submission so I feel I should have done it the other way around, thoughts on this ? Also, when ellis had a kimura on you at around 13:10 that roll technique you did of untangling your own arm from him by rolling over into it, Is an extremely effective way of avoiding the kimura in no-gi. Also, how was your swim ? Loved the video though, and I do fully recommend learning both gi, and no-gi within the space of BJJ, even only 1 session of no-gi a week is enough if you're also doing Gi most of the time. You can learn more from sparring I feel than the actual training once you know enough, so maybe try and do open mat session with no gi.
