@@OliverPickard I was stopped by the police way back round 1970 whilst riding my Lambretta. I had removed all of the panel work so the officer was saying it wasn't road worthy. I told that I was a trainee motorcycle mechanic (true) and he said the "the cobbler was often the worse shod person in town". he was right in my case to a degree but couldnt find anything mechanically wrong 😃

You’re speaking about always having made things for other people with the constraints of time/price and the desire to make something for yourselves really struck a chord, with me! Another great episode gentlemen! In regards to your comment about getting some good quality jubilee clips I have a suggestion. A mate and I have just finished building a vw mk2 golf with a big horsepower turbo engine. We found a tool called a “clamptite” tool from the USA. It’s a hose clamping method using lockwire and the special tool. The tool can actually be made with a bit of light fabricobbling. Have a look on google for diy clamptite tool and you’ll see ones made from turnbuckle. The joints that won’t be touched after final assembly are prime candidates for this method and it’s much neater and smaller than a jubilee clip. The joints don’t look that strong but we couldn’t separate them so nothing to worry about in terms of reliability. All the best and keep on keeping on!

First time leaving a comment because I started my first watch through a few weeks ago. Loved the content and it’s really funny since project Binky and Throttle stop garage are my other favorite builds. Binky “We need a bracket”, mosquito “if we do it this way we won’t need a bracket.” But what I came down here to say os this. The first time rotating tires on 15’ WRX I was jacking up the front on a sloped drive and when I got the front tire off the ground a few inches the back tire was also off the ground. So some manufacturers still make a stiff chassis. 😂

Oliver, you and your Dad seem a lot like the story of Chuck Beck here in States. He seems to have had that same problem- he would set out to do something for himself, others would see it and offer money. Ultimately he made a deal with a constructor; he conceptualized and prototyped several cars, notable Porsches and when he had a product he was satisfied with, off to the manufacturer it would go. I'm glad it happened- Chuck is still with us, pushing 90, having really great ideas and attending big BBQs in his honor. You've set a goal and I expect you to honor it. I'm still a bit iffy on whether you will fit into it if it has even carpet on the floor, though, and the mystery is keeping me up some nights. Not to worry- I've lots of pop corn to see me through- because it's certain you and your Dad will do something remarkable if we just let you. On dealing with criticism of your choices; there is an immutable rule in all of the motor hobbies- "the title holder and/or the purchaser of the paint get's to pick the color", all others are just noise. This principle applies to all the parts and decisions therein. Anybody give you grief, tell em' Fred told you!

AFAIK most car bodies generate lift, a flat floor will definitely help though. It looks like the front is going to be light from the balance point on the jack stands, (granted there's a lot left to go in there) so perhaps front end downforce is the priority? I find Julian Edgars books and KZfaq channel good for developing my understanding of aerodynamics if it helps.
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard 11 ай бұрын
The centre of weight with me in the car will be around the gearstick but you are right shedding air from the front arches and minimizing the effect of the tires is definitely a priority but so is rear end lift

Great work as always. I'm always thinking ahead and I know you have to widen the body and add flares. Have you considered pulling a mold of the finished body to be able to replace if ever needed and more importantly, to build the new shell out of carbon fiber. You'd save about 15% of the weight of the fiberglass and maybe more being that the original body used the old methodologies of fiberglass work that tended to be weigh heavier than needed. I know part of that is just down to cost more than anything, but curious what your thoughts were.

Newton taught us that mass traveling in a direction wants to keep going in that direction. The momentum trying to pull the car to the outside of a bend is mass x speed. so if you decrease the mass you can go around the corner at a much higher speed for the same momentum plus a lower weight allows for softer suspension and lower tyre pressure further increasing mechanical grip

I have a question Oliver don’t you need an air gap in between each one of the lines because if you don’t, you’ll have a heat transfer to the coolest line of the radiator🤔😊👍🏼❤

Yes you are correct as well as the insulating sleeve it's essential that we leave an air gap between the lines and thay touch the side of the tunnel

Just subscribed. Watching this get's me excited to start actually making my own "new car except the shell". But also dreading the colossal amount of time it will take(as doing things the easy and tested way is boring?) Anyways, looking forward to the next episode.

There's usually a really good reason for the usual way of things and if you want to go off the beaten path my general rule it needs to be different because it's legitimately better not just because it's different

Are you going to keep those old slide brake calipers or will you be upgrading them? I mean on a car that's being built specifically for how it feels to drive I would imagine you'd want brakes that feel nice. They might not stop faster but they would be lighter and have that more precise feel.

We looked at aftermarket brakes but over braking this car would be really easy to do and those 1.8 Mazda roadster brakes are actually really well designed and lighter than they look

What about emissions it´s a old engine, and it´s a new car. if you are exempt take a look at Haltech Or the like for a complete electrical system with minimum weight

Emissions regulations are more relaxed for low production and the honda K series is so efficient I've heard of it passing the test with out a cat fitted however It will have a cat fitted whether it legally requires it or not for to be responsible
