I boxed a bit to keep myself fit. During sparring without headgear - I caught a hook and suffered a knock-down. Nothing wild. I picked myself up almost immediately and continued the training. Two hours later in the subway I broke into sweat that drenched my clothes in seconds, I got sick and threw up violently. Obviously, I was concussed. We are talking fighters below amateur level, light sparring. It was f*cking horrible. Since that day I cannot watch a fight without being empathetic how these guys might feel after a fight, pissing blood, throwing up, headaches, the whole works. Being caught by a powerful punch from a professional boxer... that shit changes you.

i was an amatuer boxer in my younger days and partook in a lot of local fairground matches when they came around every year ( Goose Fair, Nottigham, UK), as an experienced fighter compared to most guys i was fighting/sparring against, if they played it cool they walked away with a bit of cash in their pockets and the respect of their mates/peers/girl etc, that part i enjoyed, but when you have a gang of 10 guys waiting outside because you ko'ed their mate, that part i didn't:) i would talk to them before the match and explain said concept, and that if they didn't agree and felt like they really wanted to test themselves, that that was great i would oblige them with as i love to fight, it rarely happened, but when it did, once his bell was rung a bit i would step back, watch the legs go, see if they were going to go down etc, the ref, who was also the boss of the show would call me a pussy and mock me for not knocking them the fuck out as it was better for business in his mind, however i'd seen what happens to kids who sparred without mouthguards, they lose teeth... i just didnt want to hurt anyone, people think boxing is fun, it hurts to get punched in the teeth, to get ur nose broken (not me thankfully) few want to do it once they have had a few kickings, pissed blood a few times etc, hah most of my mates couldn't even get through the first circuit training session never mind spar rounds after or fight. For me though It was the best thing i have ever done.

I know it's the ref's job to be on time, but those last 2 made me sick b/c of the lack of sportsmanship. Mercer's guy was half outside the ropes and defenseless and the guy wasn't even in his league anyway, so for him to take a crazy wind up shot like that is horseshit. Same with Ecklund at the end. They should take a cue from George Foreman who several times waved the ref over to say, "look stop this before I kill the guy". Other fighters have done it to. I'm disgusted right now.
