my dad flew F-16s all my childhood. he loved this movie, said it inspired him to become a pilot. We both watched the new Top Gun movie together in theatres. :]

To this day, Willard and Simpkin are still waiting to be deployed…

I've been watching this movie since I was 2 years old. I'm 37 now. My life revolved around this movie. I fly today because of this movie.

Always loved the F14.. the thing for a fighter was HUGE compared to other fighters, yet could hang in there with with anything flying at the time.

Now consider that Tom Cruise actually DID that second stunt in an actual jet for the sequel.

I went to see this movie when it first came out. This movie really launched Tom Cruises career. At the time his was 1 of the best movies ever made. I'd give it a 9.

Tom Cruise should win Oscar 🏆 for this film. Acting in a jet fighter with all that G force that must have been really hard to do, but he executed with such professionalism. He convinced me and probably the audience that he was a real Top Gun pilot. 👍👍Great movie, which I think also should win an Oscar 🏆👍👍

Looking at the enemy planes I thought they didn't look anything like a MIG. The aircraft used in the movie are U.S. Navy F-5s. The F-5 is a second generation jet fighter (mid-1950s to early 1960s). The F-14 Tomcat was retired in 2006.

problem with this whole movie was they started it with a talk about how fighters had lost their edge and relied too much on missiles and not guns and the climax of the movie ends with them never using their guns

The enemies are actually not Russian. Other countries have MIGS and the filmwriters actually haven’t said which country they fight.

And in top gun 2 ice asked maverick who's the better pilot him or maverick, in this scene we can see who really is the better pilot.

Those aren't the Russians. Original Top Gun was about North Korea and Top gun Maverick is about Iraq

For those who'r wondering why those F5 were dubbed as Mig28. Keep in mind, that the reason was that during filming in TopGun 1986 they'r using actual aircraft, Not CGI. The Soviet would never sell their mig for Nato countries. Eventhough US do have several Migs through various mean, the limitation for spare parts means they didn't or never allow the use of them for just a movie show. Those Migs were invaluable asset for study, not for movie. As a result, they use what available in Navy's inventory, twin engines F5 as twin engines Mig29. But since TopGun never once depicted who'r their enemy, they changed it into fictional aircraft (29 minus one) Mig28, fictional country with fictional insignia. Just think it like this, Tom Cruise cast as Maverick, F5 cast as Mig29. You found similar thing in Iron Eagle w/ F4 cast as Mig29; Kfir cast as Mig23. Simple.

Title is a bit misleading. It's never specified what country the hostile nation is in the film. However, the directors have since stated that they were meant to be North Korean but due to tensions at the time they were changed to an unknown country.

i was todays years old when i found out they werent based on russians but north koreans edit: there was an interview and the director said that they were planning to use north korean mig-29s, but it was rejected by the US government

Russian pilots? the enemy is not identified in either film, we just know they are foreign, Russian is just assumed.

When avoiding the Mig missiles, why does Iceman never use flares? In Top Gun: Maverick the Iranian F14s have flares, did the American F14s not have countermeasures?

Never realized until now that Iceman's plane is using a smoke canister beneath the hook to simulate engine smoke.

It's all fun and chill till it's an actual battle with the Russian fighters.

Dog fight scenes are always nice,but my biggest problem with this Movie is that "I recognize every single aircraft and type! 2 Star's for the fake aircraft and everything else is just entertaining!
