Yes. It's a bit dramatized, but all the gangs mentioned in this movie were real. In the early-mid 19th century, 5 points was what today would be called a "no-go" zone. This neighborhood would exist for about another 80 years or so after tis scene is depicted. Such famous American outlaws as Al Capone, his mentor Johnny Torrio, Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano got their starts in the infamous turn of the century 5 points gang. The modern American Mafia was pretty much born there with the Black Hand. E: typo - _whay > what_
