What makes this so strange is the lore that spaying the dog brings to the comic. That means the parents caught their son making out with the dog, and their first thought was: "our son is *GOING TO FUCK THIS DOG.* Let's make sure that *when he does* , she won't get pregnant!" Implying that humans and dogs can reproduce, and that it is the biggest concern of the parents, not the morality of the situation.

The death of Laika was sad and kind of wholesome in a way. Prior to her launching, the Soviet government realized that she would probably either suffer a slow or painful death when she starved or burned up in the atmosphere on re-entry so, when it was time they had a chute deliver some poisoned treats to her and she drifted off to eternal rest as a softer and "calming" version of the Soviet anthem played on for her. Now she's up in heaven, probably spending her days flying on her angel wings exploring space with Yuri Gagarin

Raine Dog is a key example why writers absolutely need proof-readers, and not just for catching grammatical/ spelling mistakes either; it’s also for bringing in a newcomer’s perspective to properly interpret if the story, world, characters, situations and such are clear and/ or conveyed well, mainly to avoid problem in which people misinterpret what you’re really trying to say, especially on the internet where that type of stuff spreads like wildfire.

I remember reading a TMNT fan comic years ago. At one point Shredder has April tied up in her underwear and is electrocuting the shit out of her. Krang asks him "Is this really necessary?" and Shredder goes on a long rant about why it makes sense he would do this given how much he hates the turtles and anything that would hurt them by proxy is worth it. ... it felt like that was an actual conversation he had with someone that he was showing his stuff too beforehand. And before you ask, no, this fan comic was not meant to be smut.

Most every really passionate creator I've ever met has hit a point in their storytelling where they're like, "And I'm going to do this big, shocking thing that's going to be really brilliant commentary on this issue I feel strongly about!" And then they'll regrettably lose control of the thread and the whole thing comes out looking messy. I don't begrudge any artist for that, I think it's almost always a necessary step in the creative process, and I certainly wouldn't want to be judged forever for what I've done going in and out of those phases.

I think a much better way to introduce the idea of Rayne getting spayed would be her falling for and getting caught kissing another anthro dog. Plenty of people spay their dogs when they start becoming affectionate with other dogs, and it'd be able to tackle the subject of "Oh my god sentient dogs can get spayed just for showing affection" without having the whole "making out with a human boy" thing.

I think the author was just fascinated with how animals are portrayed as nearly human in entertainment, but still considered animals by the viewer. It’s a very strange line that we have drawn and I don’t think it’s wrong of the author to explore that. I encourage this curiosity. The fact that the author didn't plot out the comic and was making the story up as she went was the fatal flaw here. The core idea is a good one and something that a lot of people have thought about. A story that explores and deconstructs those tropes is a good idea, but it requires a lot of thought and careful planning to make sure the message the author is conveying isn't lost on the audience.

Can’t believe fucking Family Guy of all things handled this subject better. The episode where Brian hits and kills another dog with his car, spends a ton of time trying to hide the evidence thinking he’ll be charged with murder, then finds out it isn’t even a crime to kill a dog. Then all the time he spends free to carry on with his life with no consequences, he has to reflect on how little value is placed on his own life as a dog. That plotline did a better job of getting its point across and it didn’t even need to try and convince the audience that “maybe beastiality is okay” to get there

I never questioned this stuff as a kid but later in life reading that Walt Disney saw Mickey as a person and not a literal Mouse gave some insight to how the animators looked at the divide between cartoon animals being human or not. Pluto does plenty of non doglike things but he is still a dog and can do what ever an artist wants but he is assigned to the role of a loyal pet to Mickey or Donald and that's what his purpose is. It's the same deal as Kitty White of Hello Kitty being a girl not a cat that the internet had a brain hemorrhage over. Also maybe don't self insert your self as a dog romantically kissing a child on the lips.

Honestly the whole Hello Kitty situation wasn't that hard to understand and wasn't really that deep. She's an anthropomorphic cat, she's more human than cat, it's mostly just her character design. the main advantage of anthropomorphizing animals is that the cultural stereotypes and assumptions of that animal can act as shorthand for their personality traits without having to even write much dialogue or exposition. Fox, smart and tricky. Snake: treacherous and dangerous. Elephant: big and tough, but also gentle. Actually a lot of that goes into fursonas too, albeit the community has existed long enough that the species can take on new stereotypes.

Maybe have her refer to the boy as her brother or ask for her own bed or try to sit on on the couch with the family.Having her deal with being the family dog rather than a part of the family could be a really interesting perspective to have.

The tone and lack of direction and planning are definitely what did Raine Dog in. Even though, the comic sought to explain how talking animals would exist in the real world, it only went halfway with it and thus actually ended up making it more confusing and freaky like with the spaying. I think the #1 takeaway for this comic is that the talking animal problem is actually weirdly nuanced and complex and in order for it to be addressed in a story, it needs to be deliberately and carefully planned.
@anecro
@anecro 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The entire world in the comic feels very narrow, as if she refused to elaborate on many obvious questions, such as why ownership even exists or even what evolution next to another equality intelligent species implies. You can't just say "ok animals are intelligent now" and then assume ownership or non existent rights are expected to still be present. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't essentially keep people as pets, it's very weird how the people in this are written to never question that or find it creepy. Planning was definitely lacking a ton, pretty much every question I have breaks the logic of the comic even more.

The spaying and the kiss is just 100% the author projecting her struggles. She probably felt her freedom taken out from her because she couldnt love who she wanted to, and the spraying is a involuntary analogy to her transexuality. The author herself seemed to realize that. The dog could have lost her freedom in other ways. Being forced to be a guard dog against other animals who are just trying to survive in the humancentric world would be interesting. Wanting to fuck the family kid is just weird.

I'll be honest, with how often we have worlds were humans and "animals" have the same general intelligence, this is kind of a genius idea for a series, that would probably be way more accepted if it had a little more tact applied to it. It's weird how much suspension of disbelief is applied to these characters, like Brian Griffin, while we're still expected to laugh when they do the Dog thing. There's a lot of established franchises that could be looked at under this lens, and a lot of room to explore it on its own.
@xXx_Regulus_xXx
@xXx_Regulus_xXx 2 жыл бұрын
Brian was what made me notice the broken cartoon logic in the first place. In some episodes, he'll be into a human woman and that's already stretching suspension of disbelief pretty much to its limit, but seeing that and then watching the episode where he's romantically interested in Lois's father's prized racing dog who iirc could not speak, I couldn't even focus on the plot at that point. Anthropomorphization wasn't built for these kinds of ethical quandaries.

Honestly would love to see how a society would cope with animals trying to be people too, what your species would mean for the work you get, what your diet limitations could mean for the places that you can get food, like are there carnivore-only parts of town with meat shops and not a single veggie for a mile, and even stuff like Raine dog, where what happens if a human catches feelings for an animal, let alone their own pet? Is there pets out there trying to pull shit like this to get special treatment? Can a human be a "pet"? Does the concept of pets become looser, like taking on a stay-at-home lazy roommate who's only job is to be your best friend? Maybe it's a contract, maybe just a verbal agreement? Do you expect your dog to do the dishes? Fold the sheets? I'm honestly mad that this potential gem got marred in controversy and poor execution, someone should write a story like this but really try.

I actually wrote an essay about the use of animals in race allegory in college, and basically came to the conclusion that you have to think very, VERY hard about what you're doing, as most of the time you end up accidentally saying something fucked up about the minority you're trying to represent. take zootopias predator/prey dynamic-- the message is "don't be prejudiced", but it also implies minorities pose a real physical threat to their oppressors, rather than being equals. i think this issue here is that the author genuinely did not know what the allegory even was when writing this: what is spaying the equivalent of to humans? is our horror at dog-kissing supposed to make us rethink our "horror" at interracial romance/lgbt romance? because if you're reading this comic, you definitely aren't freaked out by those things, and HOPEFULLY don't see dog-kissing as even remotely similar. as she said, the point was to be "unsettling" but i don't think she thought any further than "damn, if dogs could talk thatd be pretty fucked up"

Sums up my own thoughts nicely. The problem a lot of the time comes down to people not stopping to think about an aspect of a world they're creating. The author in this one didn't think about any of this clearly, from the logic of ownership to that scene. You need to ask yourself things people would ask, like "why are animals still being owned?". If you don't have an answer, you need to fix that hole.
@sashimimisha

It could have definitely be handled better, but "the little kid treating someone equally who society tells them not to" is a pretty common trope that shows how prejudice can be a learned behavior. Allegories can often be more trouble than their worth to write. Honestly, Raine Dog was a favorite concept of mine back in the day. It was an interesting take on the idea but it's a shame she didn't go back to it after Phoebe and her Unicorn got picked up. Loved Ozzie and Millie too.

I think it's a pretty interesting idea for a comic, but I think her main pitfall was making something that was shocking for the sake of being shocking. She succeeded, of course, but it was obviously a bit overwhelming and overshadowed the point of the story

Could be worse. I was reading a perfectly innocent comic about anthropomorphic human-animal hybrids in a society built just for them, when the site popped up a recommended comic for me in which a teenage boy snowplows the monster under the bed to the rhythm of his sex-addict parents getting it on next door.

Long long long long before Dana Simpson (1950s I'm talking) there have been comics who have a more serious tone, that explore inter-species relationships in frank, serious and often disturbing ways. It's a whole genre that existed before her.
