Old Ma Peggoty's house at the top of the hill in a fictional 'Northern' (actually South-Western) town is the last delivery in Ridley Scott's 'Boy on a Bike', voted one of Britain's best-loved adverts ever. Freewheeling down the cobbles of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, our young hero rides into the sunset in what is one of the most iconic moments in TV advertising history. There's wheatgerm in that there bread - but also a claim that falls foul of today's advertising standards, so the 2019 reboot had to re-record the narration. This restored version preserves the original in all its glory.

I was going back through the career of Ridley Scott, his, drive, ambition, and talent enabled him to work his was up from obscurity to one of history's greatest directors. It's amazing to be able to find many of his commercials here on KZfaq, being a Yank, I've never had been exposed to them. Commercials can be art form, they reflect the era and times and give insight to a country's culture and heritage. These petite masterpieces such as this beautiful bread commercial deserved to be restored and preserved for future generations

I was there yesterday May 22 2023. Brought back many memories. I walked down then back up. 51 years ago it looked easy but now at 64, not so easy. And yes, the boy joined the london fire brigade and served at Islington while I did my time at Knightsbridge.

I remember this advert for Hovis bread and found it really charming. The music played by the band was the second movement from Dvorjak's New World Symphony. However in the original version the speaker spoke with a northern accent- Yorkshire maybe. In the revamped version the accent sounded like a West Country one.

This may be to correct the common misconception that this advert was filmed in Yorkshire, when in fact it is Gold hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset

I thought the same, but I'd forgotten about the other two Hovis adverts, one with a Geordie accent, and one with a Yorkshire accent. So long ago it's easy to get them confused I think. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irWHfah0ydXGoZ8.html

It’s not restored in the sense they change they voice actor and changed the ending script entirely and threw in a modern tea pouring clip to cut off the end of the ad people knew and loved. Cleaned up and changed more than restored. Pity. Even if the original audio wasn’t perfect audio can be cleaned up some. Authenticity > audio perfection.

Whyever go to all that trouble to restore the film, only then to destroy the original soundtrack? There are two separate issues: 1. Rereleasing it as an actual advert - then the content needs to be adjusted; 2. Restoring the film (the subject here) - then the original soundtrack should also be restored, warts and all.

Amazing restoration, i'm so happy that it could be restored from film directly and not just a crusty old Video Tape Reel, So much more detail could be captured on film even back then that was impossible with conversion methods when this would have originally been converted for TV Broadcast in the 70s that modern equipment can finally capture today.

Picture is wonderfully restored, but changing the words ruins it. The rich tones of the original narrator have gone. What's the point of restoring the audio track if you're not going to use it? Surely this should be treated as a historical document and not an advert? (It's falls foul btw. It's not a chicken.)

Carl Barlow was the young lad on the bike. He was paid around £60 for the two days filming. He's now in his fifties and a retired fireman. The baker was the late, great actor Bill Maynard. Such an iconic advert and a great slice of British history, even though I'd have much preferred the original narration of Howard Lang and soundtrack. Ashington Colliery brass band playing Dvorak New World Symphony. To me this version is not so much a restoration as a make over.

What the hell? They recast the voice actor and changed the ending script and cut off the ending to insert a modern Hovis product. That’s not restoration, that’s changing the advert… and it’s not how the pubic would want an ad that’s part of the public consciousness restored. Stop trying to rewrite history by changing the ad everyone knew and loved. Hovis corporate got involved, maybe? Seems likely. Bring back the original audio recording and if it has some cracks and pops it’ll just have to do. Less is more. Classic case of over-production.
@CalvinsWorldNews

"involved" ? Likely, I'm imagining paying for the restoration costs (and then some) was cheaper than fresh advertising. Maybe £200k? As for rewriting history, I'm genuinely surprised this hasn't been remade yet, retaining the 1910 time period, but with an ethnic minority female getting the role, to promote "the message"

This street and its houses don't look much different from those that could be found in the hilly parts of of my native Sarajevo's old town at that same time period, and I'm sure the same is true of many other towns across the world. If you're old, as the Two Ronnies send-up of the commercial shows, living on a hill is extremely inconvenient. I'd be much more inclined to be nostalgic about the flat-land villages of Britain if I hailed from there.
