That was a sad video.. His lab got shut down and he lost all his hard work. Then he became depressed and became a alcoholic. Then he died from drinking too much alcohol. He didn't become a nuclear physicist, and he didn't get to finish his reactor. He also become a outcast that everyone feared.. So sad. Poor guy. I hope someone completes his dream someday and builds a mini nuclear reactor in his name.

Such a shame. What a brilliant mind. From a boy who dreamed to get his atomic Boy Scouts badge, to building a nuclear reactor in his backyard, then wanting to become a nuclear engineer, and wanted to build great things for this world. But, his wonderful dream ended up getting shut down, was shunned by his headteacher, developed serious depression, and did other things elsewhere. His depression is what probably lead to his alcohol poisoning and his fate. I’ll be honest, it angers me how most just shut his dreams down and didn’t give credit where it was so rightfully due. Brilliant Backyard Engineer, and Aspiring Nuclear Engineer, David Hahn, you will be greatly missed.

In a hypothetical scenario where he actually builds his "mini" nuclear reactor, the entire town would be in risk of radiation poisoning. So you'd have an (arguably) sadder ending than what actually happened. Plus, it's not exactly a genius move either. He simply exacted radioactive materials from common objects and gathered them, hoping to create a radioactive object that will reach critical mass. He certainly was passionate about his um ..."research", but the way he pursued it was too reckless to be considered admirable.

For one the students in question were a group and were also cal tech students so they were doing more than just repeating something which had already been done before, they aimed to actually develop something, unlike the kid in the video, who simply attempted to repeat something which had already been done, anyone can do that as the method has already been laid out. Don't use events which are in no way similar in order to make up some bs. There is a difference between simply wanting to do what has already been done, and wanting to develop and research new technology. There is no point hiring a kid who had made so many mistakes without fixing them just because he tried to do something people think is "complicated", his only real ability was perseverance, he was able to effectively collect a good amount of information from credible sources but after that, he couldn't think for himself as for what to do after in order to get everything to work properly, he couldn't actually develop a method.

Looking at the physics behind the Tesla transformer now is fairly comprehensible, but building one yourself with the limited resources you have as a 14 year old, that was quite impressive!

I met him actually, sorry to hear he passed away. I randomly got a ride with him in a taxi from the airport when we were both stationed in Norfolk, on the USS Enterprise. I was a Nuclear Electrician at the time, ironically he was unable to get into the Navy Nuclear program, he was clearly a bright guy. We were both Eagle Scouts and he told me about the incident. He even showed me a newspaper clipping that mentioned the incident, which I probably wouldn't have believed him if he didn't have, having a pretty good handle on what is needed to make a nuclear reactor. For not being a Navy Nuke, he had a pretty good grasp on the science and physics involved. I don't think the idea of neighbors seeing a green glow is very realistic. He told me that he got caught after he had became concerned with the safety of the project and was attempting to dismantle it. He had already disposed of the majority of the nuclear material and was spotted loading a large number of tires that he had been using as radioactive shielding into his car and had the police were called to investigate. A lot of the other stuff he mentioned as well, such as collecting ore (which is common on the shores of the great lakes) to attempt to extract the U235/8 and roaming around with his geiger counter hoping to find radioactive material. He told me he hit the jackpot one day when his geiger counter spiked and it lead him to a old clock that had a vial of radium inside it, presumably to repaint the hands.

People like this are the people we should be nurturing. This kid had the motivation to do what he did and the intelligence to do it. The world lost a great mind because the people around him shunned him for what he was doing. His mom was a POS for telling him not to speak to guests. All that does is teaches kids to withdraw from society because they perceive it as "what i think is not important" or "no one cares what i think". He was psychologically murdered by his parents and peers through alcohol.

They were helping him. He was a dumb shit that didn't get all of his research completely in order, and instead did his work as it happened. Although it's a fast track to experience science, it's also the most dangerous, not only to yourself but to others. Which is exactly why the environmental agencies needed to intervene to keep him from doing too much damage.

@TarsonTalon

@Noruzenchi86 Welp, maybe if actually lived in a free society, he wouldn't of had to work in such conditions. Also, f*ck the 'environmental protection' agencies. They once tried to fine a man for obstructing a river with 'wood debris'. Turns out it was beavers. Also, I don't know how you think you can protect the environment by creating infinite amounts of debt. That money eventually ends up buying products for the employees of said government agencies, thus taking ever more out of the environment. Infinite amounts of monopoly money, finite amounts of resources (or at least resources that can be reasonably brought to bear). THINK.
@terry_the_terrible
@terry_the_terrible 5 жыл бұрын
@@TarsonTalon You should dig more on that story. When the police arrested him, his face was full of sores produced by radiation exposure. And in the video itself, they say that David basically shut down communication with anyone and thus no one could have helped him OR prevent him from killing himself with radiation. Police shutting him down was actually the only thing that reached to him and extended his life to 39 years instead of dying from radiation induced cancer.
@petersenior5432
@petersenior5432 5 жыл бұрын
Terry At the time, he would have lived longer if he was supported because the distinct lack of support got him his drinking problem that killed him at 39. If he was assisted by the government to get a job in radiology and nuclear reactors, he could have been provided with hazmat suits and other methods of defense against radiation. Or at least a job in teaching about chemistry, instead of being turned into a freak by the government doing nothing. If he died of natural causes, having died of "old age" at 39, then your point would be valid. But the validity is removed by that he killed himself with alcohol poisoning, as mentioned in the video at 9:18.

I have nothing on that David, but I blew the neighbor's car door off with a homemade RPG when I was 14. I built it out of my old 3 stage model rocket and some old 4 inch pvc pipe. I just loaded the final stage with a metal tube packed with a black powder, lamp oil, & crushed rocket motor fuel dry paste capped off by the half of a shotgun shell with powder and primer. A nail mounted through the nose cone struck the primer to detonate it. I bought the largest size rocket motors I could buy for the lower stages and the launch button taped to the pipe. I fired at a piece of plywood but it went ballistic and found a neighbor's Grand Am instead. It was the coolest and most painfully punished thing I have ever done.

I remember when I was also 14. I tried to make a homemade nitroglycerin. I had to bought a bottle of toilet cleaner, glycerin from the local drug store and I had to stole some industrial disinfectant that is kept somewhere at my cousin's basement. I loaded the finished product in a can and try to detonate it. It sure is the loudest explosion that I ever heard, its so loud, police had came over to where I detonated my nitroglycerin. Luckily I immediately flee out Of the scene before the police arrived....

Are saying they should have left him with his lab and let him die early anyway? His passion was nuclear power but he had been exposed to it far too long to pursue a career in it

@ allwhoplay He started this as a child boy scout in a small town when he started this, do you know all the laws for such research in this day and age? Especially back in 80s - 90s when you can't just google any of what he did. I know that must blow your mind that there was a time before the internet where you can look any of those laws and facts up.

unshapened python I meant government recruited him as nuclear specialist or something that contributed into nuclear technology, and no, he didn't get recruited, he only enlisted as navy.

Bezbro Builds Ik, but reactors can go unstable at any time without proper maintenance 24/7, and that’s just 1 kid alone. Anyways even if it didn’t cause a meltdown, it’s good that they shut him down because without proper safety gear he would of died anyways lmao. I’m just so surprised that people are criticizing the scientists for helping keep him and the others around him safe.
