Are they made in China? That might answer your question, why they don't smooth the hook before packaged

Awesome review Jennifer. Up until 3 years ago I was a Boye and SB aluminum hook girl(45+ years). I couldn’t justify the cost of a Furls. I think that they had a awesome sale so I decided to try them out and started with an Ebony streamline and an Andromeda streamline. I wasn’t sold on the resin but fell in love with the wood. I very quickly bought the entire set ( through sales) and somewhere along that journey I bought an Odyssey. I hated the weight of it but kept using it. Now I am a forever Furls crocheter, so much so that they recently sent me a coupon as I’m now considered a “Collector.”My favorite is the Odyssey but I do use my streamlines when the yarn needs a hook that is less slick. My hands never get tired. I’ve never had a hook break. Yes Furls cost a lot of money but they are an investment in the craft that I am passionate about and I am worth it, lol.
@Desaundrea
@Desaundrea 2 жыл бұрын
That last part you said, “I am worth it”, I had a problem with that for a long time. I never thought I deserved to buy myself a thing. I always gave to others. Cinnamon helped give me courage to finally buy a set of Furls , as I too couldn’t justify the price of them before. Took my spouse passing away for me to realize I am worth it.

I want to also mention, the sticking/dragging of the Yarn ID could be the yarn, not the hook. I have worked with this yarn a lot and I found that no matter what hook/needle I use, it drags a lot

Thoughts after your excellently thorough review: I have never used this type or shape of hook but I know for sure I don't tend to like working with plasticky hooks (because they do come with draggage). I prefer wood or bamboo. Your review helped me realize that i crochet with a pencil technique and this could be a major gamechanger. I always fumble and struggle with hooks that are not straight (like a pencil). However, I think the shape of these hooks could work for me. I might purchase and try the Boye hooks to test the shape. However, I stand by my belief that a bargain or value isn't determined by dollars alone. The hooks we actually use are the ones that work and feel the best. If I won't use a hook it is a complete waste. So, I've decided that if the shape works for me, I will invest in the Furls!
@vegangelist
@vegangelist 2 жыл бұрын
I read this and couldn't help laughing. Proof that we all experience things differently: You: plastic/resin has drag but I love wood and bamboo Me: no matter how pretty they are, I hate working with wood and bamboo hooks because of all the drag (yes, even furls streamlined hooks). I will say that the furls streamlined swirl hooks (resin) don't feel plasticky at ALL! They are as smooth as resin can be (not as smooth as metal) and are really great for chunky roving yarns and chenille yarns). I concur with your statement about hooks you don't use being a waste. I've bought custom hooks and other hooks that people have LOVED but couldn't stand them so the extra money I spent didn't make them more valuable to me. I sold them and bought my favorite tulip hooks instead.

You might want to try the Prym ergo hooks. I have them in the large sizes. They are smoother and more comfy than the large clover amour hooks. Frankly, they are cheaper too. And they have this same furls streamlined shape. REALLY light. I don't normally use plastic hooks but finding metal hooks in large sizes that aren't really heavy is near impossible. So plastic and resin are my only solution. The furls streamlined swirl hooks and the prym ergo in the large sizes have made me put away both sets of clover armour large hooks. I'll probably end up selling them.

Thank you for such an honest review. I have been wanting to try these. I do not have the money to buy everything new that comes out. I need ergonomic hooks and I usually get regular boye hooks and I buy the 2” equate self adhering elastic bandage and wrap it to my own needs. Dollar Tree sells the same bandage, but you get a better deal at Walmart. I can make it feels just like my furls and the bandage helps with the grip of my hook. My furls hook has that same squeak. It’s not a loud and I kind of don’t mind it. When you changed to the yellow hook, I noticed that the head has a dramatic change from the tip to the width to 8mm. I wish they had a gradual change. I guess that’s why I like the streamline design. I always clean my tools before I use them. The machines they use to make them always has residue. You are right cleaning is a must.

Thanks for the review. I’ve tried these same hooks and have the Boye pink (J) 5.75. My other J hooks are 6.0mm. My favorite hooks are Furls and Clover Amour. The ergonomic teardrop shaped Boye hook feels very plastic-y not at all like the Furl Streamline Swirl (resin)hooks. The Boye resin hook had several spots I had to sand down to remove the jagged edges of the mold joins.

Thanks for the review and honesty. The squeak would immediately send it to the trash for me. No, no and NO. I learned 48 yrs ago on an aluminum G Susan Bates hook. And used that one hook for EVERYTHING until I was old enough to know better. I was 8 😬. Still have it ☺️ I personally am not a fan of Boye at all. Watching you crochet, there was just too much struggle. I crochet pretty fast and the last thing I'd want is resistance. But not a fan of plastic hooks either way. I may someday try a Furls, I've heard good and bad about them. But I would absolutely hate to spend that kind of money to find I didn't like to work with it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank you again. Have a super day. And then there are some who love all things furls and some who only like a specific hook. I hate the streamlined hooks. I've tried many wood and bamboo hooks and I just don't like the drag of wood and bamboo. However, I LOVE the streamlined swirls for large sizes (it's the ONLY hook I will use with chenille/blanket yarn). But they did take a little getting used to. And I'm torn about getting the Odyssey because I just don't like heavy hooks. I use metal ergo hooks for anything 6.5 and smaller. But I'm always on the hunt for a more perfect hook in sizes 7 mm and up

I don't think we'll be able to get the Joanne ones in the UK. I have an acrylic addi and it's really good quality so I would recommend that to anyone wanting an alternative acrylic hook.

I bought one of those Boye hooks in size H two or three weeks ago. I made a hat with it. I fell in love with how light and the feel of the shape and length in my hand. The seem was no trouble, and I thought this was a good way to see what the Furls felt like. However, it did feel like cheap plastic, and there was drag on the yarn. I had trouble with splitting the yarn too, but I looked forward to using it again with a different yarn. Sadly, I put it in a pencil pocket of my backpack with a couple clover hooks. Yep, some of the hook tip broke off rendering it useless. So, big caution.... don't treat those like a metal hook. I still can't decide if I will spring for a streamline Furls. These are way more delicate than I am used too, and it is a lot of money to spend, only to discover the head isn't suitable for me.

Jennifer, you and I share the exact same opinions on almost all hook and yarn reviews. I was refusing to get the Furls until just recently because I thought they looked uncomfortable and the shaft didn't seem straight to me (like it would stretch the stitches maybe). I tried the Odyssey and now I want one in every size. Expensive but so worth it if you're serious about crochet and you have the means to spend more on your craft. I have also tried the wooden hooks and I like them a lot too. I prefer the heavier weight of the Odyssey though, which I didn't expect. Thanks for this review. As always, your honest/unbiased opinions are so appreciated!

I'm glad about this review. I wouldn't buy Furls but I am willing to experiment with different shapes and somewhat materials after finding I had no problem with the plastic of light-up hooks. I use wooden hooks occasionally but mostly I end up with the cheap metal hooks (15 cents each) I started learning with. I use pencil grip and only had mild pain in my wrist after working 5 hours with a yarn that was more like felt. "Standard" acrylic has never caused me a problem even when crocheting a whole day.

What a great review. From your review, I know I won't like them. I am spoiled though, because also from your other reviews, I tried Furls. The Furls resin isn't my jam, but using them caused me to try the Furls metal hooks and I LOVE THEM. They are heavy, but they are a thing of beauty to work with. I struggle with that drag and squeek on any plastic hook, so know these would drive me batty. Thank you!

Good morning Jennifer. I bought plastic Boye hooks yrs a g o and wasn't a fan at all as they broke easy. Also these were made just like the metal hooks. I love my Furl hook. I believe the Furls are solid and being a bit longer yes they would be slightly heavier. It was a long time making the decision to invest in the Furl due to the price. I always buy during sales too in order to save. I also only buy from Joanns and others when what I want is on sale. That's just how I roll. Thanks for doing your review. I love your honesty.

It might be possible to (gently) sand off those mold seam lines; I've done that to smooth rough bits on my bamboo hooks.

When I first started crocheting many moons ago, I used both Boye and Susan Bates metal hooks…about 4 yrs ago I got information on Furls hooks…I order 1 purple Odyssey hook and fell in love with it…I have 7 purple Odyssey hooks, 3 white Odyssey hooks, 3 red Odyssey hooks and 3 navy blue Blue Odyssey hooks…I can literally crochet for hours without any hand pain whatsoever…I have smaller sized Tulip hooks that I use if the pattern calls for a hook smaller than 4MM…I keep trying to purchase smaller sizes in Furls but they are difficult to come by…I figured that the Boye resin hooks would catch the yarn….the one thing I’ve got to think is that Furls is not going to be happy to see the Boye hooks since they are so similar in shape to the Streamline hooks that Furls has….the Odyssey hooks are a bit pricey ($33 for the nickel coated hooks-silver; $66 for the gold plated hooks) but at $33 per hook they are an investment that I think of your doing a tremendous amount of crocheting to me it’s worth it….thank you for your honest review Jennifer…I really think you gave each Boye hook a good go and an absolutely honest review….I think for beginner hooks these might be a good start for people and also with the current economic conditions and people needing to save money.

Furls are the best, but if you don’t want to spend that & want that same shape & style like furls, the prym hooks at Michael’s are fabulous, I used those before I got my streamline resin swirls.

I use aluminum boye but mostly because I started out on aluminum or metal of some sort I can't remember brand. It was along time ago. I have tried some ergonomic that I have not liked. I got some slide on handle cushion that are ok cause I can position them. I don't have a furl but have want to try one so I think I will get one to try or maybe try one of these for reference but that might not be good way to go. Ok one furls hook for Christmas from hubby. Thank you so much for doing this. Hugs

Hi Jennifer. I read the twilight books, 9 times, because I loved how Stephanie Meyer writes. People thought I was crazy. Lol

I had a metal hook that snagged. I took my Dremel and took it and smoothed it out
